How's your trek through the dungeon crawlers thread going tonight guys, making any progress on that backlog?

Just cracked open the old XP machine to get pic-related up and running works great, what happened to the classic blobbers?
>>
>>726005108
Is there a commonly agreed upon best-in-genre dungeon crawler game?
>>
>>726005175
Wizardry 1-3 PS1 or Shin Megami Tensei 2, 3, 4, or SJ also Etrian
>>
>experienced teen love
>had a gf for 10 years
>had a band
>had friends
>had a job
>broke up with gf
>dropped out of life
>live completely alone on neetbux and play DRPGs all day now

I don't need anything more.
>>
>>726005175
Wizardry VI,VII & 8 in that order (then maybe grimoire)
>>
>>726005457
Oh wow this looks a lot better aesthetically than the other games in the series
>>
>>726005457
Wizardy 8 worth playing? What am I in for? Any advice?
>>
>>726005175
Might & Magic 6-8
>>
>>726005175
Dungeon Master 1987. It's never been defeated. It popularized the genre and it perfected it. I don't think any dungeon crawler has ever beaten in my book. It's such a well refined masterpiece of a game especially for it's age. It's insane how ahead of it's time it was in both technology and overall design.

I always got those confused with pic-related which were basically eye of the beholder sequels
>>
>>726005175
Ultima Underworld 1 and 2
>>
>>726007040
It's amazing just be sure to bring along a save files from 6 or 7 to get some added NPC dialogue

Or if pressed for time just watch a playthrough of VII
>>
>>726005108
Why do you only have 3 party members?
>>
>>726009336
just a quick grab from google anon
>>
I consider real time and turn based crawlers two different genres, and it bothers me that people keep lumping them together.
>>
>>726008875
I tried playing it, but I really miss having an automap and it made me realize I can’t stand drawing maps.
>>
>>726010649
Mostly all are turned based only a small handful are real time though
>>
>>726005108
>what happened to the classic blobbers?
dead genre that has practically zero appeal to 99% of the modern gamer audience
>>
>>726010649
two different flavors of the same shit
>>
turn-based crawlers are shit
they were born into existence only because of the technical limitations at the time and they're rightfully dead now
>>
>>726011702
that's like saying action games like baldur's gate are obsolete, the classic ones not the newer release
>>
>>726011857
no, the classic ones are fine
turn-based blobs on the other hand are basically the manifestation of gaming industry growing pains
>>
>>726005175
The actual answer is no, but there are stand-outs. Now play Grimrock.
>>
>>726010961
>zero appeal to modern gaming audience

This is a strong indication that drpgs are a high quality genre.

>>726011702
You're wrong, faggot. I'm going to go play Etrian Odyssey for the next 8 hours mostly for my own enjoyment but also in part to spite you.

>>726005108
I've been playing some off-brand dungeon crawlers, started on Operation Abyss the other day. It's pretty bland, but it's something new.

I really want to make my own dungeon crawler. I want to do it in a modern setting, something similar to World of Darkness where the characters are hunters traversing an urban setting that's got some otherworldly locations mixed in. There's less focus on random encounters in dungeons (Though those exist too, they're somewhat easy and just a minor drain on resources), but there's a lot of FOEs like what EO has that are absolutely deadly: Vampires, True Fae, Warewolves, etc. Your objective is to kill these enemies, but you have to find ways to weaken them before you take them on.

Each dungeon crawl, your resources are limited. You can only bring so much ammo, so many medical supplies, etc. Taking damage in combat can temporarily lower your maximum HP for some attacks, and while you can reduce this by managing it well, ultimately you will be forced to retreat or finish the dungeon each run. That's why the random encounters aren't very hard to clear, because if you let them get out of hand, they'll wear you down and force you to abandon the run.
>>
>>726012108
if it's such a high quality genre why do all the games in it sell poorly? you'd think drpg enthusiasts would buy the games if they're so good
>>
>>726012538
Did you create a more west or Japan style art set anon?
>>
>>726012463
>preasu undelstandu vely haldu to ploglamu gamu
>pleasu imaginationu the gameu insteadu
>>
>>726012638
DRPG enthusiasts do buy new DRPGs. But there's like 12 DRPG enthusiasts. Everyone else is filtered.
>>
>>726012729
Yeah, the game should have 8 pages of dialogue whenever you take a step.
>>
>>726012812
>Everyone else is
not a retard apparently
>>
>>726012812
I feel like that's cope

most games in the genre are trash
>>
>>726012538
I don't hate the concept but feels like it would be better suited for a UU style game, not a blobber.

Also making games is hard. If you have no experience you can't fathom how much work goes into it.
>>
>>726012720
West, but art isn't really my forte.

>>726012964
The problem is, I've created a few games, but unless you count mods for existing engines like Quake, basically everything I do goes to console output. I have no idea how to work with graphics libraries from scratch. That's fine if you're making something like Rogue, not so great for any other game.

I hate (and love) this genre. We had good successors with Ultima Underworld, Kings Field, Wizardry 8 or Arx Fatalis and still most dungeon crawlers are boring grid paper labyrinth slop.
>>
>>726012638
>if it's such a high quality genre why do all the games in it sell poorly?
Bit too low effort for my tastes, apply yourself.
>>
>>726013080
>Ultima Underworld

Huh what was that an evolution from?
>>
Mount and Blade except raiding dungeons. No army, 2 NPCs at the most that accompany you, big part of gameplay is camping/weapon maintenance/light sources and crawling through holes. Then after clearing the dungeon hauling all the loot back to town via wagon or pack animal.

Don't try to recommend me some stupid "overhaul" mod or Outward. This game doesn't exist.
>>
Remember Stonekeep?
>>
>>726012638
most of them are either outdated, low quality or just boring
its niche for a reason, the genre didn't evolve for like 3 decades
funny enough the one that come recently with some neat designs and good audio-visuals is fucking gacha game, that is how low this genre sank
>>
>>726013171
Neurath was a huge Wizardry and Eye of the Beholder fan.
And these games were the main reason to make Ultima Underworld.

The SNES port has more varied graphics. I assume the Saturn port does too, which just received a fan translation, but I haven’t tried it yet.

>>
Is the first Wizardry trilogy on PS1 better than the SNES version?
>>
>>726013340
>>726013862
No, Stonekeep. The one with the cinematic cutscenes and the goblin Wahooka.
>>
>>726013931
Probably.
The SNES version removes all the puzzles from Wizardry 2+3 making them extremely bland and boring.
>>
>>726013880
ye
>>
>>726014110
fuck, i didn't know that, i completed 1 on SNES. now i can't do the party transfer thing i'm fucked
>>
>>726014106
As far as Grimrock goes it's just Grimrock 2 and Vaporum, at least what I'm aware of.
For older games try Lands of Lore, there's also Eye of the Beholder 1/2.
>>
>>726014169
Not just the puzzles, the combat and traps are also balanced easier. The PS1 version retains most of the difficulty of the original.
>>
>>726012538
>I want to do it in a modern setting, something similar to World of Darkness
Don't steal my idea, well you can but I thought of it as well.
>>
>>726014106
Try Operencia: The Stolen Sun. Unlike Grimrock, it’s turn-based, but I still really enjoy it.
>>
>>726014106
If you're looking specifically for games like Grimrock than there are Vaporum games and Tower of Mask.
>>
>>726005175
Eye of the Beholder and Grimrock 2 are my favorites

anon is a fag, the games are fine and the NIS grind is optional, combat is kind of shallow though
refrain is the better game overall with more interesting dungeon environments and a slightly less schizophrenic story
>>
>>726022290
>the games are fine and the NIS grind is optional
really now?
>hold A through every random fight in the dungeon
>rng decapitation shit
>get hardwalled by the boss because you need to grind up levels, new dolls, new covens
>>
>>726005108
I'm having fun, but I need to sit down and grind out the games to the end. It's just been slow and I've probably started playing too many games at once. I think the big problem is that if I want to just start up a game and play a little bit, it's hard to do so in the later stages of most DRPGs.
>>
There are no good modern games in the genre and my zoomer ass can't handle the supposedly good old games. I did like etriams though, but only finished 1 and 2 (originals).

If by "brutally hard" you mean having tons of gay RNG shit that wastes hours of your time and can't be played around in any way, sure.

PS1 remake. Easy to understand rules and good intro to mechanics. Wiz 6 (PC version I'm assuming) takes time to learn.

saturn is the best version and the emulation is good

You can easily beat the game without grinding if you're not a retard, especially with a properly built team.
