How's your trek through the dungeon crawlers thread going tonight guys, making any progress on that backlog?Just cracked open the old XP machine to get pic-related up and running works great, what happened to the classic blobbers?
>>726005108Is there a commonly agreed upon best-in-genre dungeon crawler game?
>>726005175Wizardry 1-3 PS1 or Shin Megami Tensei 2, 3, 4, or SJ also Etrian
>experienced teen love>had a gf for 10 years>had a band>had friends>had a job>broke up with gf>dropped out of life>live completely alone on neetbux and play DRPGs all day nowI don't need anything more.
>>726005175Wizardry VI,VII & 8 in that order (then maybe grimoire)
>>726005457Oh wow this looks a lot better aesthetically than the other games in the series
>>726005457Wizardy 8 worth playing? What am I in for? Any advice?
>>726005175Might & Magic 6-8
>>726005175Dungeon Master 1987. It's never been defeated. It popularized the genre and it perfected it. I don't think any dungeon crawler has ever beaten in my book. It's such a well refined masterpiece of a game especially for it's age. It's insane how ahead of it's time it was in both technology and overall design.
>>726008875I always got those confused with pic-related which were basically eye of the beholder sequels
>>726005175Ultima Underworld 1 and 2
>>726007040It's amazing just be sure to bring along a save files from 6 or 7 to get some added NPC dialogue Or if pressed for time just watch a playthrough of VII
>>726005108Why do you only have 3 party members?
>>726009336just a quick grab from google anon
I consider real time and turn based crawlers two different genres, and it bothers me that people keep lumping them together.
>>726008875I tried playing it, but I really miss having an automap and it made me realize I can’t stand drawing maps.
>>726010649Mostly all are turned based only a small handful are real time though
>>726005108>what happened to the classic blobbers?dead genre that has practically zero appeal to 99% of the modern gamer audience
>>726010649two different flavors of the same shit
turn-based crawlers are shitthey were born into existence only because of the technical limitations at the time and they're rightfully dead now
>>726011702that's like saying action games like baldur's gate are obsolete, the classic ones not the newer release
>>726011857no, the classic ones are fineturn-based blobs on the other hand are basically the manifestation of gaming industry growing pains
>>726005175The actual answer is no, but there are stand-outs. Now play Grimrock.
>>726010961>zero appeal to modern gaming audienceThis is a strong indication that drpgs are a high quality genre.>>726011702You're wrong, faggot. I'm going to go play Etrian Odyssey for the next 8 hours mostly for my own enjoyment but also in part to spite you.
>>726012108> I'm gonna eat shit for the next 8 hours, that will show youoh no
>>726012108>still no word on next or ports of the next three games Grim!
>>726005108I've been playing some off-brand dungeon crawlers, started on Operation Abyss the other day. It's pretty bland, but it's something new.I really want to make my own dungeon crawler. I want to do it in a modern setting, something similar to World of Darkness where the characters are hunters traversing an urban setting that's got some otherworldly locations mixed in. There's less focus on random encounters in dungeons (Though those exist too, they're somewhat easy and just a minor drain on resources), but there's a lot of FOEs like what EO has that are absolutely deadly: Vampires, True Fae, Warewolves, etc. Your objective is to kill these enemies, but you have to find ways to weaken them before you take them on.Each dungeon crawl, your resources are limited. You can only bring so much ammo, so many medical supplies, etc. Taking damage in combat can temporarily lower your maximum HP for some attacks, and while you can reduce this by managing it well, ultimately you will be forced to retreat or finish the dungeon each run. That's why the random encounters aren't very hard to clear, because if you let them get out of hand, they'll wear you down and force you to abandon the run.
>>726012108if it's such a high quality genre why do all the games in it sell poorly? you'd think drpg enthusiasts would buy the games if they're so good
>>726012538Did you create a more west or Japan style art set anon?
>>726012463>preasu undelstandu vely haldu to ploglamu gamu >pleasu imaginationu the gameu insteadu
>>726012638DRPG enthusiasts do buy new DRPGs. But there's like 12 DRPG enthusiasts. Everyone else is filtered.
>>726012729Yeah, the game should have 8 pages of dialogue whenever you take a step.
>>726012812>Everyone else isnot a retard apparently
>>726012812I feel like that's copemost games in the genre are trash
>>726012538I don't hate the concept but feels like it would be better suited for a UU style game, not a blobber. Also making games is hard. If you have no experience you can't fathom how much work goes into it.
>>726012720West, but art isn't really my forte.>>726012964The problem is, I've created a few games, but unless you count mods for existing engines like Quake, basically everything I do goes to console output. I have no idea how to work with graphics libraries from scratch. That's fine if you're making something like Rogue, not so great for any other game.
>>726005108I hate (and love) this genre. We had good successors with Ultima Underworld, Kings Field, Wizardry 8 or Arx Fatalis and still most dungeon crawlers are boring grid paper labyrinth slop.
>>726012638>if it's such a high quality genre why do all the games in it sell poorly?Bit too low effort for my tastes, apply yourself.
>>726013080>Ultima UnderworldHuh what was that an evolution from?
Mount and Blade except raiding dungeons. No army, 2 NPCs at the most that accompany you, big part of gameplay is camping/weapon maintenance/light sources and crawling through holes. Then after clearing the dungeon hauling all the loot back to town via wagon or pack animal.Don't try to recommend me some stupid "overhaul" mod or Outward. This game doesn't exist.
Remember Stonekeep?
>>726012638most of them are either outdated, low quality or just boringits niche for a reason, the genre didn't evolve for like 3 decadesfunny enough the one that come recently with some neat designs and good audio-visuals is fucking gacha game, that is how low this genre sank
>>726013171Neurath was a huge Wizardry and Eye of the Beholder fan.And these games were the main reason to make Ultima Underworld.
>>726013240Huh you mean crawl?
>>726005108Just beat Legend of Grimrock on the hardest difficulty, what a slog, now I'm going to try Might and Magic IV and V.I also started playing Waxworks, because why not.>>726005457>1 tileset for all the dungeons in Wizardry viWhat the fuck were they thinking, man this shit makes me wish for hybrid remakes/remasters.
>>726013389The SNES port has more varied graphics. I assume the Saturn port does too, which just received a fan translation, but I haven’t tried it yet.
>>726013340that's stone soup lol great game
>>726013278Are you talking about Wizardry Variants Daphne?
Is the first Wizardry trilogy on PS1 better than the SNES version?
>>726013340>>726013862No, Stonekeep. The one with the cinematic cutscenes and the goblin Wahooka.
>>726013931Probably.The SNES version removes all the puzzles from Wizardry 2+3 making them extremely bland and boring.
>>726013880ye
>>726014110fuck, i didn't know that, i completed 1 on SNES. now i can't do the party transfer thing i'm fucked
>>726014106As far as Grimrock goes it's just Grimrock 2 and Vaporum, at least what I'm aware of.For older games try Lands of Lore, there's also Eye of the Beholder 1/2.
>>726014169Not just the puzzles, the combat and traps are also balanced easier. The PS1 version retains most of the difficulty of the original.
>>726012538>I want to do it in a modern setting, something similar to World of DarknessDon't steal my idea, well you can but I thought of it as well.
>>726014106Try Operencia: The Stolen Sun. Unlike Grimrock, it’s turn-based, but I still really enjoy it.
>>726014106If you're looking specifically for games like Grimrock than there are Vaporum games and Tower of Mask.
>>726005175Eye of the Beholder and Grimrock 2 are my favorites
Grimslog
Play wizardry variants Daphne
>>726015017Was that the one that took analytical data from you without your consent?
>>726016908There's not a single modern game that doesn't do that, if you're worried about that use a separate PC just for vidya. Even steam is spyware.
>>726016875I tried but it's just not very good...
>>726013240I love it. Still have the book that came with it.
Anvil of Dawn
post best lewd Darkest Dungeons mods
>>726012538>>726014823You two need to get in line, me and my other failed gamedev buddy already claimed WoD. I'd like to do Mage, though, since I think adapting the magic system could lead to something really fun.
>>726010732bro, your millimeter paper?
>>726005108Labyrinth Of Refrain vs Labyrinth Of Galleria?
>>726005457they look so ugly
>>726017249Pity nobody cares enough about it to fix the bugs.
>>726016875Convince the studio to use the boatload money they're getting to make a proper standalone game and I'm buying it day1 even if they overprice it at $80 with Daphne graphics
starcrawlers is a good game
>>726020663tomayto, tomahtoboth are brainless nis grindfests>>726021132procgen trash
>>726021491>both are brainless nis grindfestswait what?
>>726021617anon is a fag, the games are fine and the NIS grind is optional, combat is kind of shallow thoughrefrain is the better game overall with more interesting dungeon environments and a slightly less schizophrenic story
>>726022290>the games are fine and the NIS grind is optionalreally now?>hold A through every random fight in the dungeon>rng decapitation shit>get hardwalled by the boss because you need to grind up levels, new dolls, new covens
>>726005108I'm having fun, but I need to sit down and grind out the games to the end. It's just been slow and I've probably started playing too many games at once. I think the big problem is that if I want to just start up a game and play a little bit, it's hard to do so in the later stages of most DRPGs.
There are no good modern games in the genre and my zoomer ass can't handle the supposedly good old games. I did like etriams though, but only finished 1 and 2 (originals).
>>726023050Give Cirnozardry a try, assuming you can stand Touhou and especially its music. (You'll hear the music a lot.)
>>726023228>rpgm>2huI'm good, thanks.
>>726023050I can only soom that it's grid/tiles that filters you.So try free-roam ones like Arx Fatalis and King's Field.
>>726024462>assumeI have no idea why I wrote soom.
>>726024515Fucking soomers
>>726005175>Is there a commonly agreed upon best-in-genre dungeon crawler game?Anything without anime on the cover and without an anime aesthetic.
>>726024462Actually I like the grid/tiles... And in-game map drawing...
>>726017249I would but it doesn't seem to run with the scummvm engine?
>>726010649My big splits are grid based vs free movement, and real time vs turn based.
>>726023228ok that's kinda interesting.Given it is Wizardry AND Touhou, I'll assume this is gonna be brutally hard?
>>726005108
>>726005457Why'd they stop showing tits in newer games ?
>>726027378It hasn't been any worse that standard Wizardry, from what I've seen. Just be wary of dark rooms and one-way doors.
>>726027378>Wizardry>brutally hardIf by "brutally hard" you mean having tons of gay RNG shit that wastes hours of your time and can't be played around in any way, sure.
do i play wizardry 1-3's PS1 remake first or 6?
>>726027882PS1 remake. Easy to understand rules and good intro to mechanics. Wiz 6 (PC version I'm assuming) takes time to learn.
>>726027448
>>726005175no because people that like wizardry are insane because those games are cock and ball torture and they love it, someone talks about japanese dungeon crawlers like like etrian or smt and people just go "lol anime", honestly my favorite dungeon crawler right now is strange journey but its not like i play a lot of them because im just starting out
>>726022523>get hard walled by anything>says he only holds A through every fightSo you admit to being retarded
might and magic is so much more superior than wizardry, yeah i know wizardry started the whole genre but wizardry is just unfair as fuck, no matter what you do you still get one shot by tons of enemies
>>726028282cute esl
>>726005108Do the Spirit Hunter games count?I've finished 1 but I'm curious about any changes NG and DM2 do to the adventure game tier exploration.
>>726028142>hold A through RANDOM encounters (because you don't need to do more)>get hardwalled by the BOSS (because it doesn't matter what you do if you haven't grinded enough)Funny how you can write but not read.
>>726027525The esrb ratings board anon
With the Baroque games, how decent is Saturn emulation?I heard that it was techncially the "best" version, but i know that both it and the ps1 port are translated.
My favourite dungeon crawler is Brandish PSP
>>726029619saturn is the best version and the emulation is good ps1 has more content but the changes make the game worse, it also looks worse
>>726028438You can easily beat the game without grinding if you're not a retard, especially with a properly built team.
