As a Zoomer who's never played Halo before, and just got picrel, what can I expect going into this series for the first time?
Any advice you'd give to a first time player?

Don't start with Reach, 343 decided to put the games in chronological order rather than release.
Play 1-3, ODST, then Reach
On Heroic first playthough, Normal if you need it, Legendary is for 2nd playthroughs if you want.
Halo 4 and onwards is at best a YMMV, I'd personally say don't bother.

I will admit bias
but I think you'll have a good time.
Start with Halo: Combat Evolved.
Make sure the graphics, music, and sound effects are set to the original.
Have fun.

Play Halo: Combat Evolved
Then Halo 2
Then Halo 3
Then ODST or Reach.
Ignore Halo 4 because it's fanfic trash.

pretty much what everyone else has already said
play until 3, then ODST and Reach, and ignore the rest
