DNF 2001's atmosphere and weapon animations are so kino. Someone should just make a game using the assets, not an attempt at making DNF itself since it's obviously cursed, an original Duke game.
>>
>>726017385
Honestly I wish most of these assets were ported to other things. UT99 or 2k4, Garry's Mod, Half-Life, whatever the fuck; a bunch of perfectly good weapon, item and enemy assets are now in people's hands and they're wasting away in favor of the horrible high-res HD fan pack shit for DN3D, if anything Duke ever gets added at all.

Mentally ill jeets killed gaming. Everything has to be blurry and retarded. All your processing power has to go into taking the perfectly good looking highly detailed textures and blurring them. Every pixel has to be turned into a blurred smudge. Anti-soul gas anywhere so you can't see anything in the distance. Bloom and shit.

As I said, there are modern games that look amazing, realistic, some with art styles you know will age like fine wine, but they all fail the simple task of making me FEEL
And this is no nostalgia bullshit, is as if devs stopped trying to convey emotion only to focus making the game look good or fit an appealing art style.

Lmao. PS2 lighting was completely flat, like playing with brightmaps and no light rendering. Lighting was a straight downgrade from former vertex lighting on PSX.
It was so awful you could notice how games like Metal Gear Solid 2 had to fake lighting with textures painting it.

fog with distance is good, it looks good in world of wracraft, the game looks better when you lower view distance because of it. but its not always just fog it depends. You can have dark mountains in the distance with the sun behind it.

THe big problem is that its used, i think, to make people think the game is better than it is. So they make the fog very close to the player, a bit like GTA San Andreas. Which looks very bad, the fog should be much, much further and barely appear except at specific places.

Some shitty old school fog, not volumetric but old school, in old games to make a smaller environment more mysterious and to be more afraid or your surroundings can be pretty KINO however. as often its not about rules but nuances and case basis. And as wellways homogenized standardized shit from AAA and "game " "schools" is always the same academic formulaic trash with no understanding

I dont think its just detailed, its the amount of things. You could have a generic forest of similar trees overall and your brain woudl rteat it as "the forest in the background". Its how much different stuff they add everywhere to pretend their visuals are better. You can have both 4k textures and lay out your world with measure, with clarity in mind

older games also had more clarity in terms of objects and amounts. if you redone an old game 1:1 simply increaisng polycount and textures it would look clearer.

also having played mankind revolution, the game doesnt really look too detailed. its fine

>>
>>726039572
It's quite simple the devs took easy route and used lumen instead of more traditional lighting methods.
But they realized the performance is awful so they had to lower the quality.
Lumen is very heavy so it runs at 1/4 the resolution and when game is using upscaling it gets even worse. It needs a lot of denoising so it breaks up when you have dynamic scenes.
They tried to mask it with tons of post processing like DoF but it didn't work.

TAA is in theory a great idea.
You have an "accumulation frame" and you have the current frame.
Every frame, you deform the accumulation frame to make it look like the current frame, then you combine both and can accumulate stuff! so for example if you "wiggle" the current frame sub-pixel offset, it accumulates up to something that looks like FSAA (the perfect anti alias).

As long the deformation step happens perfectly, the technique is great!
It never is. the deformation is a fucking mess that smudge everything and can't work correctly if something only exist on the current frame.everything that don't get deformed turns into an horrid motion blur, and if you abuse it too much like a 30 frame to perfect shit like UE ambient light does, you get uncanny horrid fades.
Enjoy your disgusting, sub N64 slop mess from hell.

Prerendered 3D backgrounds are an odd little footnote in gaming history, like FMV except not shitty. They were everywhere for a short period, and then technology caught up to ambition and they went by the wayside, with no reason whatsoever to ever do them again. They are basically a signature look of the mid to late 90's, so there's a ton of nostalgia for them, but nobody would accept the style of game that could make use of them, and it's difficult to capture that dithered look in real time 3D.

Games are made using deferred rendering now instead of forward rendering which allows for placing more dynamic lights however this comes at the price of more demanding software that doesn't work well with older AA solutions like MSAA and requires temporal AA. TAA is very blurry and in some games can't even be disabled. Games are supposed to look "better" thanks to more light, just ignore forward rendered games with great pre-baked lighting like HL2 or AC Unity, lazy modern devs don't want you to think of those. Please consume blurry Lumenslop instead.

you'd be right if it was 2012 and deferred renderers were all the rage, but you're only half right.

more lights are good yes, but we've already sorted that in "forward" renderers like forward+, clustered or tiled renderers, which are only semi deferred.

the real reason we used deferred shading is because the multiple render passes allow all of the data to be stored in the g-buffer before compositing them together and pushing it to the monitor, this lets us do most of the shading required to make a game look even semi "realistic" nowadays, geometry pass into albedo, normals, roughness, specularity, and so on, then it's lit, then it's sent to the monitor, the massive g-buffer is also the reason we need so much VRAM nowadays, not that it wouldn't still be expensive in a forward renderer, just less expensive and more limiting.

now I'm not defending this, I just understand it's required for these big companies to make games look the way they want them to, to sell them to normies who buy consoles based on which renders games "the best"

I think more devs need to fall back to simpler renderers to get their visions across sometimes, games like Expedition 33? sure, Unreal 5, whatever, nice toolset when in the right hands, make your game look good.

but something like Hi-Fi Rush? outside of the ease of Unreal 4 I don't think they had any real reason to choose said engine, an in-house engine or even Unity would've been a better choice for the artstyle they went with, at least it runs good though

to add to this really quick, people (I'm not purposely shitting on you) >>726061002

will be very quick to blame deferred renderers without even understanding what they do, the "blur" people talk about was a thing WAY before TAA, because old AA techniques like MSAA only clean up geometry edges, they can't handle anything that a shader spits out, so no in-surface specularity AA, no transparancy AA etc, big fucking problem, the real solution is either SSAA (which is way too expensive to do on a new release) or TAA, which when not overly aggressive is the PERFECT solution, the only real downside being that you need a high input resolution for the output resolve to stay sharp, so bad idea at 1080p, which is unfortunate given that something like 55% of gamers still play at 1080p, myself included. you CAN sort this out with an internal higher resolution scaler, lots of Unreal games launch with a resolution slider, this legitimately cleans up all TAA issues for me.

the other problem? transparencies don't work in a deferred render pass, so they have to be handled in a separate forward pass, and then composited back into the deferred g-buffer before being sent out to the monitor, and because it's not part of the deferred pass it can't be cleaned up by any kind of AA, instead we've swapped out alpha blended transparencies for alpha to coverage textures, which are grid-like in appearance and look terrible but are cleaned up by whatever reprojection modern renderers, now this IS bad, straight up it looks like shit 90% of the time and doesn't work if you disable TAA, only issue is that alpha blended textures require you to render the entire image again wherever they intersect with it, so again, too fucking expensive.

making a game is hard, a good game anyway, I have nothing but respect for devs who put out anything you could deem finished and looks okay

Forward rendering suffers from especially poor performance with modern graphics not only due to lighting but also the computational explosion from many overlapping shaders. Now this could mostly be resolved by cutting down the redundant shader bloat to 1/10th and using decals, but do quasi-forward renderers address it somehow?
