This game is a pile of shit as an RPG, but Survival makes it into a really fun and immersive exploration survival looter shooter settlement expansion thing. I hated it on release but after giving it another shot all these years later the game mode pretty much makes the game actually enjoyable. Just not as an RPG.The world is also pretty neat, though it's not surprising considering it's what Bethesda are best at. Or used to be, anyway.

Really feels like survival was supposed to be there from the beginning. It gives settlements a purpose since they become your safe zones where you can resupply and expand your territory. It feels meaningful because it's actually fucking dangerous. Otherwise settlements are gay and useless unless you want a shit version of minecraft.

i bought a proper high-end PC some months ago and FO4 + expansions was one of the first things i played because i was never able to run the game at 60+ FPS so i didn't want to play it. ended up doing 300+ hour play through on ultrawide 144 FPS 24/7, + all expansions. legit had a lot of fun. the main story line isn't great, but the world building felt excellent (i particularly liked the expansion zones, don't get the hate) and the combat is fun. at least up until the last third of the game or so, at which point i basically had infinite ammo and stupidly overpowered legendary items (was playing on very hard so you get a lot of them). the early parts of the game where scarcity exists and you get destroyed by most things is definitely a lot more fun. the game looks surprisingly good too, not not so much graphically (obviously dated) but the aesthetics are nice and you can tell the environment artists knew what they were doing back then. it's just sad that the balancing was a bit off because again once i reached that point where nothing is dangerous anymore it just sucks the fun and immersion out of the game.
