Some RPG's are focused on a very clearly defined and pre-established characters with emphasis on their personal story - like say, Witcher, CP77. In those case, I usually care somewhat, because it's (at least when done right) an important part of the puzzle of the story.I cared about romances in Witcher because grew up with the books, and know how important his love-life is to Geralt as a character. And I was genuinely curious how they'll handle them.Similarly I cared in CP77 because again, it is a pretty important part of the development that V goes through.But other RPG's are more free-form and more about giving you as a player control to sculpt the main character, in which case I usually could not give any less of a fuck. I don't actually find gratification in pretend-waifu's at all, and with these games naturally having less controlled writing (to allow for more wiggle-room for the player), there usually isn't good writing to back it up either.So yeah: basically, if I'm supposed to self-insert, I don't care. If an RPG is structured as someone else's story, and I'm more-or-less just an audience - then if it's well written, I care, if the writing is tripe I don't.Really, ultimately only one game managed to get me REALLY invested in what could be passed for romance option, and it wasn't an RPG, it was a survival game called Pathologic.And that is because it is easily and by far the best written game I've ever played, and has some of the best ways to accommodate player agency while also keeping the writing and characters extremely central and extremely well defined. And also, it's not really a romance subplot of the traditional variety.Fucking Lara Ravel man. The only time a game got me genuinely completely lose my shit over an implied romance charater. In both Pathologic games, 1 and 2.
