I suppose you could argue that but they were starting to introduce too many mechanics to manage IMO. It's a fine line to walk, but I think the hammer was an unnecessary addition. Or at least replace the sword with the hammer instead of having both.

Hammer was a TAG2 addition IIRC.
TAG1 only introduced new enemies like rolling stone imps while ramping up the difficulty and making ultra-violence feel like nightmare.

i personally think the hammer is good, eternal's movement felt mireably bland compared to what i was coming from (ultrashit) and at least getting one button to ground pound was great. hated how you only get it with only like 30-60 minutes of game remaining
in general i cant get myself to replay eternal, specially not with the entire beginning stretch of the game where you have

You can just replay it with your shit unlocked, you don't have to do a new save file if you don't want to.
It does trivialize all of the early game, but at least you have your movement.
