I would say something about operations that happen without abiding things like war crimes or the Geneva Convention being a bridge too far for most soldiers but then I feel like tankies today want that anyway so it's not even that far removed.

I feel like the linchpin that would prevent things from going off the rail is the simple fact of money.They're stuck dealing in the currency of the country they operate in so if a government suspects a corporation is trying to militarize themselves in a way that could present an internal threat they'd simply cap the tap and sanction their efforts to get bigger than their britches. And if a foreign government tries to prop them up as a means of subterfuge a) that would be really obvious and b) that government very likely doesn't have the same level of financial backing to bring about a revolution (since the only reason a company could be that successful in the first place is by operating in a prosperous-enough country - any smaller nation trying to upend that country's power base is obviously starting from a worse base themselves).

The idea that you could become this powerful as a totally independent institution is whats unrealistic.
