Why are we still doing the "let's lampshade the fact that the protagonist never talks" thing? The point of a silent protagonist isn't that they don't talk, it's what they say is left up to your imagination. But when you have other characters explicitly point out that they don't talk, then they just become a literal mute, which defeats the point. It didn't work when Half-Life did it either.Either have them talk or don't, but don't make their silence an actual in-universe character trait.
Nah I disagree, they can be actually mute, it was always kinda implied that Chel was, for example until they FUCKED IT UPBut what you don't do is leave room for them to talk as if they expect the audience to reply in their head and then awkwardly call attention to the fact that they don't talkEither have them talk, have them be silent and let you imagine if they talk or not, or make them actually mute and have characters talk straight and to the point instead of constantly trying to have your cake and eat it too with this "they're mute but you can still imagine them talking" shit
