I'd say 7th gen was the last "authentic" generation. You had new IPs coming out and companies took actual risks with experimental games.

I grew up with the other three, never had a PS2 until 2012 when I bought a backwards compatible PS3 for like £100, was worth it until it overheated.

I think the other three would give you the most in terms of vidya, even if the PS2 did eventually have 2000+ games. You'd get the best multiplats with Xbox and some good exclusives too, some pretty great games from Nintendo and the PS2 games you didn't get on Xbox could be here and for Dreamcast you'd get as many games as you'd want since no copy protection.

Either way you'd do well with all four consoles, when was the last time buying all consoles in a generation was worth it?

That's not to say I didn't enjoy gen 7. To an extent, I did, but I didn't even bother keeping my 360 until the next Xbox came out, Wii went off the casual and shovelware deep end, and that was the gen where movie games culturally changed from crappy games based on Hollywood flicks, to games trying to be movies.
