You don't own shit, you don't "buy" shit. Its all a scam that can be revoked at any second.

Even if valve doesnt do this or ever revoke your games its still morally wrong to not legally something you own and bought.

I buy something and its given to me for under an agreed contextual permanent time frame, I own it plain and simple, same thing with food. This isnt some renting service that you get to decide when it ends at any moment scamming people. You either rent something temporarily or you buy it and own it permanently, there is no other option.

You don't pay cash for a car and then the car companies say its their parts and property and take it away from you with a towtruck in front of your house whenever they want to, that's wrong and everyone knows it, same with movies and games.

Why should I give my money to a company that is essentially working as the enforcing arm for corpos and US copyright law which are wrong. Principally I will just never use steam because its wrong, SORRY.

I will continue to buy from steam because their competitors pay to make dogshit threads like this while Valve puts out hardware that doesn't require their service to use.
Itself being an admission that they fully intend to maliciously use the relationship with "licensing" software.
Much the same as anyone who talks about Steam "collecting data" is admitting to the malicious use of it
>>
>>726064676
Acthusally faggot, its a license. You don't own games, music or books you buy. You get a license and that license has rights attached to it.

There's nothing stopping you from launching heroic games launcher through steam and getting all the benefits of steam input or using the new steam controller.
Steam's proprietary software offers nothing besides the workshop and their new controller.

and that's wrong, because if you buy something permanently in any context thats not renting, you own it.

Licenses pretend to be buyable products but are this weird quasi-permanent renting service where you technically own it forever, but only until the copyright holders say you do.

Its not morally right and buying digital media with your hard earned money that you worked at a job should be the exact same as you buying food, a car, a product from the store, etc.

>You don't pay cash for a car and then the car companies say its their parts and property
They have quite literally been doing this for more than a decade by saying you only have a license to run the software that runs the ECUs that drive the car, as well as trying to delete the right to repair or taking your vehicle to a non-dealer for service. Also, as we have seen with Ford Mach-Es if the software on the car fails an update in some way, the car is rendered inoperable.
>>
>>726065401
Or you can just pirate and pay nothing anyways, you don't "own" it legally, but neither did you when you bought it, or shall we say permarented it.

So I'd rather just pirate if buying isnt owning.

If buying isnt owning, piracy isnt stealing and its not morally wrong.
>>
>>726065569
For most of cars, buggies or any transporation history if you bought the vehicle you owned it, copyright is a modern and immoral, invalid invention that no one follows. Only the US and the west put these laws in place for the last 20 years and nobody follows them because they are anti human.

Same way with any product you bought in history that was not specifically stated as a temporary rental service, show/play/theatre, handyman etc. If you bought it and it was under the context of permanent ownership, YOU OWNED IT.
>>
>>726065401
>you own nothing regardless
If this is true (its not) then why are you paying for it?
>>
>>726065789
>If this is true (its not)
It is if corporations are allowed to step on the people in the US.

Thank god russians and chinese actually have freedom in their countries. They can enjoy entertainment and they can buy things they own.

Soon US and Canada cars will be rentable and they'll start applying this copyright license system to physical items, not just digital with some sort of loophole.

Soon houses under US and Canada laws will only be rentable from the home builders who copyrighted the design.
>>
>>726065735
Yes, that was before transportation was primarily driven by mechanics rather than software and as we all know today they're all driven by numerous ECUs which in turn in are controlled by corporate software. I'm simply stating in response to the OP, car companies are in fact saying the car is still their property even after 'buying' one which turns to only be a license. This is also being done in the agro sector with tractors and other equipment.
>>
>>726065943
>corporations are allowed to step on the people in the US.
No they aren't. They have no control over what you do in privacy.
>>

Just like FPSrussia, laws and things people all agree should be legal, they prosecute people who they don't like and maliciously target freedom loving americans.

Thats all copyright and DMCA ever was, a tool to maliciously enforce punishment without having to answer for it.

Technically, Not really. You do legally own the land in America, you just have to pay taxes, but there's nothing stopping you from paying all the taxes for 60 years, setting up your own solar, your own water system, your own whatever and living free without anyone bothering you. Utility companies are private, you don't have to use them as you can live somewhere with a county that has unincorporated land. This is still achievable for $60K USD.
It's really because people want their chickfila and fast food slop as well as shops. You can get pretty much anything on amazon/aliexpress nowadays

It is a quasi semi permanent rental service where it technically is permanent but is still treated legally as a rental and can be revoked at any time.

I either rent something for a temporary period of time or I buy it and I own it permanently. There can be no in between.

Humans have always agreed on this for 2000+ years. Renting things has been around for a long time but this isn't renting a tradesman or anything like that or renting a piece of equipment, or a horse or a ride or whatever.

You don't get to rent something out permanently and then decide at any moment that these digital infinite files can all be revoked at any time even though millions of people spent lots of real hard earned money on it.

It is immoral and wrong.

But everyone contextually agrees that its permanent, and that's wrong if you take it away, Just like if you pay in full for a car and they take it away, or land or whatever, that's wrong and immoral.

2000+ years of human history disagrees with you. It has always been if you purchased something that wasn't some sort of rental or time restricted one time use, you owned it.

Also most of the world doesn't follow US laws and doesn't give a shit about this.

The US, Canada, Germany, France, Spain, Sweden, UK and Australia are 8% of the world. They do not matter nor do their retarded 20 year old laws that say you don't own things you purchase.

Also people just don't obey them which is why they stopped enforcing it, same with cannabis in america, states are ignoring the federal government even though the people have spoken.

You don't own anything anymore. People spend 30 years slaving away to pay banks a million dollars to buy a house. Except you don't own the land. You don't get a deed. A legal document saying it is yours. It's all a fucking scam.

You're right but here's the thing. You can't and won't do shit. The death of physical media for the most part means you have no way to own games anymore. Sure they could give you a way to download the game so it could be played offline but why would they when you'll just buy it anyways? You can't vote with your wallet because there are billions of 3rd worlders who haven't even thought of the concept of ownership and will out spend you. You have no choice and there is nothing you can do so the best thing to do is to stop giving a shit and save yourself the stress. The corporation will always win, it's just how the world works. You can play along and take a few lumps but have an overall smooth life or you can be angry all the time and gain nothing but an early heart attack.

But if they revoke your installers, they automatically become illegal on your PC whenever they do revoke them.

So regular people become criminals for no reason despite them literally working and spending money to own those games, months to years of their lives. That's wrong and immoral. If we want to apply this we can apply it to anything, food, things you buy on amazon, your car you paid cash for all because some company decided to say copyright is the ultimate factor in whether you own the things you spend your money on.

Piracy for all intents and purposes is a completely legal and unenforceable act.

>it's still morally wrong
It's not. The entire idea of "buying" a game doesn't make sense.
A game isn't a thing, it's code. It's an idea. It is not something you can actually possess. It's infinitely reproducible and clonable by any person inherently. Intellectual "property" is not true property, and thus it ONLY makes sense to sell licenses to a game. Whether you can trade that license on or not, it is just a license.

If you cannot understand this simple and fundamental fact, you have room temp IQ. No amount of seething will change this. It is a fundamental fact.

Isn't steam's drm the weakest in existence? You could easily own a permanent versions of your own games copied infinitely, therefor de facto own their own games more than console babbies do. valve struck a balance with drm that gave users the most control and convenience while luring in the most publishers, making PC the most successful it has ever been to the point where its destroying consoles

meanwhile you have consoles that have built in drm in the disc and console itself. I'm not even sure how you would go about pirating and modding from a drmbox. The most I ever did was mod gta from my psp.

Here's how it works:

I legally buy a game from you. I extract it from its folder and get rid of the DRM. Now I own the game. If steam and Capcom and Square don't like that, oh well. Perhaps I won't get to enjoy games with denuvo, but that's a small price to pay to enjoy offline games permanently. And don't think about sneakily adding DRM into your game after the fact, I can always access a previous repository of your game and download that. You can't delete everything off the internet.

Exactly. The really scummy thing is they rely on the IDEA of ownership to sell this stuff at the prices they do. They're deliberately tapping into the universal perception that you own what you buy, while trying to undermining it at the same time.
They should be forced to prominently display "YOU ARE PURCHASING A LIMITED LICENSE TO USE THIS PRODUCT" in all shop fronts and at the moment every purchase is made

A license should come with an entitlement to a tangible media copy of the IP. Eg. a license for an ebook should have a voucher that can be redeemed to get a printed copy, a steam game license should entitle the holder to a USB stick or SD card containing the game.

>>
>>726087687
They didn't do it physically. Here's the logic of OPschizo.
>downloaded games are just a license
>but you actually owned the game on disc
When I showed OPschizo the proof that license agreements were the same back in the 90s on disc with scans from the Sam & Max Hit the Road manual (which states that you must destroy it if you violate the agreement), he alternately ignores it or changes his tune to
>licenses don't mean anything
So, if licenses are ironclad and I don't own my games on Steam, that means I didn't own them on disc.
If licenses don't matter, they don't matter on Steam, and I can just Goldberg any game I want.
>>
>>726087396
>so you can (legally) download the offline installer that can't be taken away?
No. If GOG shuts down. Or god forbid they ban you.. All of your games are gone. Same thing with Steam.

>If you feel the need to have a backup, do it yourself. Steam and GOG both allow this. Consolepoors are left in the lurch, though.
Good point. Digital storage media are hard to maintain, though (although that is true even if it is purchased media like a PS5 disc or 3DS cartridge). I'll look into the best practice. Thanks for teh tip.

Unironically, Steam is the best gaming preservation because I don't even seeing that shutting down in my lifetime. Even if a game is removed and you already bought it, it's still on your account. GOG? It's losing money every year and barely anyone is buying from that store and it very well may shut down in the near future. Secondly, you do not own shit (just like Steam). If GOG shuts down you legally cannot own even the installer because it's VOID. At this point real preservation is just pirating shit or sticking to a store like Steam that will probably will never die. What's even the point of buying games off GOG if you don't even own it? It's really stupid. So in this situation, owning your games on Steam is ultimately the lesser of 2 evils even if you only own a "license".

I will wait for the mad replies.

Yes, the only reason to spend money on any form of intellectual property is a moral desire to support its continued development.
There is no practical reason to spend money on videogames, unless it's access to multiplayer and the like, which is directly paying for DRM access regardless, for which steam is a better solution than anything else.

The purpose of licenses is to prevent unlawful distribution. You might own a book, but you don't own the words in that back. You do not have the legal right to copy that book and redistribute those copies.

The problem with digital goods is that they grant the publisher far more power than physical goods do. A publisher cannot just break into your house and forcibly take the book back from you, even if you violate the license. But with digital goods, there are ways to do just that.
