Found this pretty interesting.
>>
>>726064767
I like the second Mario the most. I wish that were the one we got.
>>
>>726065215
I like that one and the fourth.
>>
What level of autism do I need to have to even notice this much less care about it?
>>
Why is #4 so fucking fat?
>>
>>726064767
Yeah, SMW always looked amateurish and kind of ugly for this reason. SMB3 had a much cleaner, well realized style, despite the limitations.
>>
>>726065215
Hell yeah.
>>
>>726065374
I feel like the outline thing is noticeable enough. The shading is something you need the tism to tell.
>>
>>726064767
reznor and blargg appeared in areas with black or dark bgs
>>
>>726065374
Low. If you only look at the final game sprites, you can see the sprites have different styles.
>>
>>726065545
Except none of those are actually in the game
>>
>>726065482
>>726065545
Noticeable side-by-side maybe
But to notice in-game while playing?
>>
>>726065617
What? Every sprite in that picture is in the final game, save for the different Mario versions.
>>
>>726065675
It's very easy to notice, tendie.
>>
>>726064767
it's weird that pixel art has so many 'rules' invented by autists who aren't game devs or even artists

nobody who actually makes games follows them. all the best selling pixel art games of all time break every single rule possible
>>
>>726065910
>all the best selling pixel art games of all time break every single rule possible
Can you give examples?
>>
>>726065617
Iggy has all that black on him, and Mozart doesn't. Also, Mario could be next to all of them, and you'd be able to tell that way.
>>726065759
Wouldn't the tendie be the one who sees it because they have played Mario World a lot?
>>
>COMPLETE MISMATCH!!!11
>bothered nobody for 35 years
>>
>>726065456
>always
looked fine in 1991
>>
>>726064767
I like Directional Shading and Pillow Shading.
>>726065456
Also this. SMBAS looks amazing and then there's SMW.
>>
>>726065972
Undertale, Stardew Valley, Link to the Past, Vampire Survivors, Terraia, every Megaman before 6. many more besides.

Doesn't mean the art is bad, just that the rules are broken, such as: consistent pixel sizes, no decimal scaling, consistent outlining, small color palette, consistent shading type, consistent shading direction, consistent diagonal stepping, etc. etc.

Stardew used to have devlogs on TIG back in the day and I remember one guy sperging out because Ape did a breathing "animation" by taking the torso of the sprite and scaling it 1.1x and then back down every second. He compared it to Owlboy (remember that one?) and how the latter would outsell the former by 1000x because it had "actual" pixel art. whoops.
>>
>>726065972
Super Mario World, or so I've heard
>>
>>726065374
It's pretty interesting.
>>
>>726066615
Anon, all these modern games you named have ugly pixel art and few people consider these games to be good-looking.
They are popular despite the art, because it's not the most important thing. That's why Stardew did better than Owlboy despite being way uglier. Owlboy failed on the gameplay and character design.
Undertale especially looks inconsistent with some great background and battle sprites and a lot of rough overworld sprites that are only saved (sometimes) by the underlying design.
You only proved that most consumers don't know what good pixel art is, or don't care about it.
>>
>>726065374
Opposite; you don't need autism, just normal observation skills you lose when your brain gets fried gooning to porn so much you can get hard from looking at emojis
>>
>>726066615
Kof also have this and lot of old characters reused frames.

03/XI characters don't really blend with rest for example.
>>
>>726064767
on a regular TV back in the day, through an RF connection on channel 3, shit looked amazing

Something to consider is that some sprites are developed to display better against light or dark backgrounds. Most of these enemies are encountered in underground or dark areas.

Ludwig in particular is a special case since he has scaling and rotation effects achieved with mode 7.
The different SNES modes have different color limitations for sprites, and it was the first game that Nintendo developed for their new hardware so they were still figuring a lot of shit out, and may've been working under a NES mindset were sprites were limited to 4 colors including transparent.

There's also just considering, would Blargg look any good if you gave it outlines or shading? It's a lava-dwelling dinosaur made of lava itself.
>>
>>726064767
I wonder in what order these were done. Obviously Colored Outlines was last as it has the most obvious Mario analogue to the finished game, but the others could have gone at any time. Maybe Pillow Shading -> Directional Shading -> No Outlines -> Colored Outlines, at a guess.
>>
>>726064767
it's pretty clear SMW was developed under significant crunch
the dinosaurs island theming feels bolted on at the last minute, you barely ever see dino enemies and reznor is obviously only supposed to be one secret boss not ALL of them
crazy the game out as well as it did imo, shows just how talented Nintendo was back then
>>
>>726068410
>They are popular despite the art
wow it's almost like the pixel art rules don't matter at all
>>
>>726074537
>reznor is obviously only supposed to be one secret boss not ALL of them
that's how they used boom boom in 3
>>
>>726074537
SMW originally started out as a remake of SMB3, that is why you don't see very much dinosaur themes. The original build of SMW ended up influencing the creation of SMAS.
>>
>>726065456
>despite the limitations
Because of the limitations, I think.
>>
SMW is the better game because it's more fun to play.
>>
>>726075227
SMW is the better game compared to what? SMW? Are you retarded?
>>
>>726074765
boom boom is a mid boss and he has a few different patterns
for the secret bosses they must have wanted more unique encounters like that one king boo fight
>>
>>726074537
SMW was the first Mario game that needed to come out the same day as its Japanese console, so it makes sense they didn't know what they were getting into. SMB1 actually had a couple years development after the Famicom had already came out so they were very familiar with the hardware along with the game having much smaller scope.
>>
>>726065675
Yeah, I didn't think much of it but I thought it was weird that some of the enemies had different outlines, specifically the dinosaurs
>>
>>726075846
I would have loved to see one more 2D Mario game on SNES. I know there's Yoshi's Island but I mean an actual mainline Mario title.
>>
>>726064767
Yes, mario world is kinda of a mess of a rushed game as it was the release title for the snes, some people will say the year of dev time it got was enough but for a new console its nothing.
>>
>>726075345
you lack object permanence and reading comprehension skills because mario 3 was obviously mentioned in the posts above that one
3 is still better than world, however
>>
>>726065374
You need high level autism to care about "mismatched sprites" in the first place.

Then maybe you should fucking reply to it like an ordinary human being.
>>
>>726066225
Hello I'm nobody. Few years back my friend group was arguing SMW vs SM3 and I said I prefer 3 because world has super inconsistent art and mismatched styles. They just all asked "It does?". Yeah just look at the damn game dude.
>>
>>726064767
The ones without outlines are made of fire/lava. They're supposed to be glowing and outline would detract from that.
The rest of it is correct though.
>>
>>726064767
Still better than 3

I like number four. He reminded me of Kirby's Dreamland 3 (for better or worse.)
>>726065374
Maybe it doesn't have to be graphic related but SURELY theres some specific vidya details you've fixated on atleast once in your life.
Can you name even one thing?
For me its how Armor, Poise and equip load works in Dark Souls 1.
>>
>>726064767
the last mario looks like yoshi's island opening
>>
>>726068410
Way to completely miss his point anon
>>
>>726065374
>What level of autism do I need to have to even notice this
It's always strange to me when people act proud of how retarded they are. I mean it never bothered me that much but I'm not blind so I definitely noticed the discrepancy, at least between colored outlines vs black outlines vs no outlines.
>>
I would like the beta sprites to be used in lunar magic
>>
>>726064767
meds
>>
>>726079817
Hey Corey
>>
most importantly, this is wrong
the slight variety made the game feel more creative
think about how fondly you remember all those shovelware games that have an identical style from start to finish
I don't even remember their names or if I completed them
>>
the sprites fit with their environment
