Kirby Air Riders isn't a sequel to Kirby Air Ride, it's a sequel to Smash Ultimate.Just as how Smash Ultimate was Sakurai's love letter to vidya as a whole, Kirby Air Riders is a love letter to his own franchise that he left behind for HAL to take care of for nearly 20 years.

I'm a huge fan of Air Ride but basically never played any mainline kirby.Am playing Superstar for SNES now because of the Nova stuff in Riders, and I'm shocked at how much it's basically just the Subspace campaign. I knew Sakurai reused stuff a lot but I didn't realize it was to such a core degree.
