And in Y0, yes, Kiryu's a rookie up against three far more experienced yakuza, but the problem here is that Kiryu completely fucking crushes Kuze in the very first goddamn boss fight. What this entails is that for all of Kiryu's inexperience, his raw talent already makes him superior to his far more experienced seniors. This culminates the fight with Shibusawa, where while it's not explicitly spelled out, Shibusawa clearly feels intensely threatened by this up-and-coming newbie, and a good chunk of his motivation is to nip him in the bud before he gets out of hand. Which doesn't work out because it's clear that Kiryu's already completely surpassed him.
