Why do people care so much about symmetrical/asymmetrical layout? I've used both plenty and couldn't care less either way.
Nintendo has won everything since PS2 and they didn't even have a standard controller one of those times.

The steam controller will probably be the last controller I ever need to buy, as it has sticks that won't drift. Which models are they (if you don't know, https://dualshock-tools.github.io/ will tell you), and are there differences in d-pad functionality?From my experiences so far, BDM-010 and 020 seem immune to accidental diagonals, while BDM-030, 040, and the Edge will fail the Contra test. All of those I haven't had luck with diagonals being reliable, even if I swap out the d-pad for a circular one (inputting one is usually fine, but if held one direction will typically flicker intermittently, which is awful for shmups among other things)
