They came with shitty broken DRM like SecuROM and they were harder to find than console games because PC gaming was a more niche market so stores often didn't stock as many of them. Steam was just way more convenient. Also it was around the same time everything went digital, normies were buying songs from iTunes around this same time. Also fucking good riddance because physical media is fucking retarded. You can make your own physical media with digital media by ripping it to a CD and in fact that's what everyone did with music and movies back in the day. You can also store it on a NAS or a hard drive and never have to worry about disc rot or your disc tray slipping and tearing a massive circle crack into the center of your disc, I accidentally destroyed many 360 games by just moving the console around.
