He makes a point. Open world doesn't have to be bad. We only commonly associate it with bloated map design and just large maps for large sake with little content sprinkled throughout, and mostly with copy paste quests. STALKER is also evidence that you can make an open world that is not dead and make it actually alive. That is what A-life successfully achieves and no one does it due to optimization issues that would arise. If there is something actually happening in the world then it's intriguing and you want to explore it.
