Do you consider it cheating to turn off encounters in new releases of old JRPGs?
>>
>>726082690
yes
speedup is also cheating
>>
>>726082690
Not really, since all you're doing is gimping your exp for future encounters.
Ran into this with the FF4 pixel remaster when I was getting shit on by Zeromus and had to grind 20 levels.
>>
>>726082869
If using speedup or speedhacks of any kind is considered cheesing/cheating, that's the dead giveaway you are either playing an atrociously bad game or watching a movie.

Any self respecting game becomes harder by default if you speed things up.
>>
>>726083169
no i just consider time a resource and patience a skill. most rpgs you are able to farm currency or exp in low risk environments, but doing so at 1X speed is not worth it. being able to do it quickly is cheating
>>
>>726082869
I am playing FF1 pixel remaster and feel like I am getting not enough gil, should I just keep grinding outside of towns?
>>
>>726082690
Yes and until someone starts sending out gold medals in the mail for not cheating, I will choose to save my precious time.
>>
>>726083305
>no I just consider time a resource and patience a skill
I don't know. To me, if almost all challenges in a game can be negated by grinding in low level areas thanks to stat slop, then no matter how long it can take, it's a poorly designed SHIT game.
The way I see it, the game tells the player that he doesn't need to bother with any of the "tools" or half-assed mechanics the game gives to them. The most "efficient" method to achieve success (le stats number go high) is artificially restricted by tedium. It isn't risk or time management. It's just pure sloppy design that ruins all genres. Action games, turn-based games, all of them suffer from RPG stat slop and forced RNG padding imo.

There is no skill being developed by watching paint dry or praying for a good roll, even with odds at 99%. Good games get harder when you speed them up.

there's a reason even the best competitive pokemon players cheat by genning the mons in their teams instead of grinding despite the risk of getting caught
>>
>>726082690
Yes

If the game has a mechanic that lets me turn random encounters off it was intended to be used
>>
>>726084387
but it's right next to an option to 4x EXP and money, I wish there was ingame repels or something like pokemon
>>
>>726083658
That and don't forget to sell old shit.

>jarpig FEATURES a zero trash encounters mode in addition to a finite encounters mode
>makes the game even better because now it's all about seeing if you can route the game and beat the bosses with extremely limited resources
At the end of the day, if your JRPG isn't a good puzzle game, your JRPG is a failure.

Really the only problem is that you still get resources (exp or money) from lower level enemies. At a certain point, they should stop yielding rewards. But most devs never do this because always allowing players to go back and wipe out hordes of weak enemies to grind is a way to provide worse players with a crutch. Skilled players will be able to beat the game grind-free while less skilled players can grind. It makes the game more accessible, but skilled players will usually complain the game is too easy. Skilled players are by far the smaller demographic though, so the finances dictate allowing grinding.
>>
>>726083658
Money never stops being an issue. Giant hallway is the only solution.
>>
If you can beat the game without random encounters that means they were put there to deliberately waste your time therefore the game sucks
>>
>>726082690
Yes
And you can play the game however is most fun for you
But don't spout your opinion of the game on forums when your playthrough of it has been modified
>>
>>726085030
I thought you're supposed to grind pirates for money. That's what my favorite youtuber told me anyways like 10 years ago
>>
HOLY FUCJK
I have a warrior, a thief, a white mage and a black mage you're telling me NONE of them can learn teleport? If I just get stuck deep in a dungeon I'm fucked? god damn I'm already at cresent lake
>>
>>726082690
I wouldn't say its cheating per se outside of FF8, but its definitely not the intdended way to play the games.
I personally wouldn't, but I can see the argument for a fast forward/double speed setting like emulators do
>>
>>726082869
That won't stop me from using speedup to grind a few levels/a bit of gold and get back to The Fun. Case in point I enjoyed FF4 and 6 quite a lot but the random encounters started to drive me insane. They were getting in the way of my Fun. Nothing interferes with my Fun and lives to tell the tale. If it were a new release, and the only game I had to play for the next month or so? Sure, I would take as much time as I need. But today, with so many games still in my backlog, I can't justify spending that much time grinding. I suppose that reflects a difference in age and perspective.

Impeccable Timing! I just finished my playthrough of the GBA Version Dawn of Souls, it’s the best version imo, so much so that I’m wiling to put up with annoying encounters rates and no speed up. Also Pixel Remaster bring back Magic Charges instead of having basic MP. The more you know.
>>
>>72608269
If you use the run function you didn't beat the game. You are a fucking pussy.

Disabling them? You have so little balls the wind could blow and your chromosomes would fly away and go back to your dad's penis. Fucking cowards.
>>
>>726082690
The JRPG genre is about simply playing through the story to experience it. I'm sure many of you would argue then why not simply watch a playthrough but there is still some enjoyment had in actually playing through the game. So I don't really see any problem with someone turning off encounters. I think its to the benefit of the genre that it keeps on trying to find ways to ease newer players into it and that usually means making things more convenient and less "tedious" as many might see elements of old JRPG as tedious.
>>
I consider it gimping yourself since that's just less exp/gold
>>
>>726087351
>GBA Version Dawn of Souls, it’s the best version imo
It nerfs the fuck out of the difficulty, mostly in the way of greatly increasing player power and replacing the spell charge system with MP so mages can just freely spam magic all the time. It's the most casual version.
