Story of Seasons really killed me.

Bro I swear every Direct now is just 45 minutes of "live your second life, but now with slightly different vegetables." I saw like three trailers in a row that looked like they were made with the same Unity asset pack. At this point, if your farm sim doesn’t have some eldritch horror angle or mech combat, I’m out.

I'm not big into farm sims. I don't mind them being in the background of an open-world game like Terraria, Core Keeper, or 7 Days 2 Die. Something where it's there for you to explore if you want to, but not something you necessarily HAVE to focus on. Core Keeper did a fun thing with mixing and matching recipes with stuff you'd grown for different buffs. I just wish there was a little more content to that game.

What puts me off is the whole
>start a family and pass your farm down to your kids
I feel like it's exploitative. The devs know the audience is a bunch of childless gamers. It gives me the same ick as women who buy those baby dolls and LARP like they're real children.

I really tried to get into Stardew Valley multiple times, but when I play it I just have this horrible nagging existential dread feeling of "I should really be living my real life right now, not simulating it in a video game"

It's that kinda sentiment, whereas a game that's more focused on killing stuff or exploring ruins, I don't feel as bad sinking hours into. It's also a matter of acquired tastes, I'm sure. I know a lot of people fucking love Stardew Valley, but it didn't really draw me in either.

Yeah, it's the "have kids" part that puts me off. Maybe I'll enjoy it if I ever actually get to have kids, who knows.

pic rel is one of the reasons why i mainly enjoy games and media set in miserable or dystopic settings, playing happy life sims or consuming happy media kills me inside since i can't help it but compare those to real life

I don't mind more peaceful and laid-back games. I just don't want to be reminded that I'm a failure at life when it comes to starting a family.
