Are gaming laptops a scam?
Yes
>>726094284yes, it's always better to just build a standard pc
>>726094284I like big butts and I cannot lie
No
>>726094284if you have realistic expectations for it, no. if you want it to run the latest unoptimized AAA game at 300+fps without catching fire, yes.
Whoever tells you to build a pc is a fuckiong poorfag with a gtx 1080
>>726094284I can't tell if that's fast or not, there's no RGB
>>726094284No. Just remember to manage heat, and that the same model mobile is NOT the same as the desktop card. They are consistently inferior to building your own, and even prebuits.
Can someone explain this RGB thing to my old ass? What's the point. It makes things look fucking cheap.
>>726094284>Disposable computersYes. Just get an extension cord and a portable monitor.
The fact they're allowed to advertise themselves as having new GPUS but they don't disclose that they're "laptop" versions of those GPUs so they're actually complete dogshit should be entirely illegal.
they work fine for me>t. travels a lot
>>726095992Most people have enough common sense to understand that you can't fit one of these inside a laptop.
>>726094284I do have a gaming laptop with an RTX 3060 for a couple years now, and it plays PC games just fine. It's not as powerful as a desktop gaming PC, but it does save a lot of energy. So no, it's not a scam.
>>726096910Your average gaymen laptop buyer will absolutely shit up gaming discussions whining about poor performance on a 5070 without specifying it's the 8 GB laptop cripple version.
>>726094284the real scam of gaming laptops is the horrible build quality and the near nonexistant repair-ability mixed with dogshit airflow and heat management. Its essentially built to die, and not be repaired
>>726095715you know how lights were on in some star trek scenes just to look cool in the 60sit's that
>>726097215fucktards on /V/ literally forget this small detail.
>>726094284No just understand that they will always run hot and are built as such and of course dont expect top tier specs in a lapgtop. My advice is try your best to buy from gens before, though laptops like phones are one of the tech they want you buying brand new every time so its hard to find old years past laptops. If not buy budget laptops. ASUS TUF for example. That is assuming you are not a richfag with money to burn then you can buy a top spec custom laptop.Generally though they are not for serious gaming just general PC gaming.
had a gaming laptop for 5 years now without any problems, literally just placed it on my room like a pc. It's great since I don't have to build any shit nor buy different things like PSU or whatever. Pic related, the model I'm using.
The only problem with gaming laptops is that they're generally overpriced.
it's for traveling to other places long term on air planes not everyday living
>>726095102>>726095320sure if you're a jeet that tries to use a screwdriver as a hammer. laptops are portable, take advantage of it instead of using it like a desktop
>>726099689just admit that building a pc is too complex for you
>>726099539its good even for every day. can use laptop in bed, living room, friend/gf house, work, travel, ad hoc shit, etc. one of those things where you find more and more uses as you use it
>>726099797just admit youre an 80iq jeet using a laptop as a desktop

>>726096910dis nigga looks like a light blub
>>726094284Depends on your definition of scam.If by scam you mean veing overcharged for what they actually provide, then the answer could be yes. It just depends on how much you value portability.Generally speaking, a modern gaming laptop will allow you to play the newest games, for about double the cost; until it overheats and shuts down as the compact nature restricts airflow thus restricts cooling for the graphics card.
>>726099689>you're using it for the wrong thingBuying a "Hammering Screwdriver" that sucks for hammering just so you could use it for screwdriver things still means you got scammed.
>>726098451i own both but use my laptop 10x more. turns out i only need 4090 perf when im playing some AAA game which comes out a couple times a year. 90% of the time im on my laptop. though playing something like ff7 rebirth at max res/fps is GOATed. niggers picking desktop are poorcels who are on a budget and dont go on vacation/travel/leave their house. portability > few extra frames.games are hitting diminishing returns on gfx anyway.
Niggas here be acting like they just built a whole goddamn house after pushing some rectangular pegs into rectangular slots and connecting some cables.
>>726094284They pretty much are with how hard they are to repair maintain or being (un)able to replace components. And for some reason laptop mobos are shit and fry easily just from sustaining the power they were designed for.But still they take so little space, are mobile and so easy to install and handle I pretty much accept to buy one every 3-4years (which has been their life expectancy in my exp), I also have never cared about desktop performance.
They're not a scam strictly speaking you're just overpaying for mobilityThe problems with small form factor computing remain the same: power supply, heat dissipation, maintainability. You can't have a powerful system without it being plugged into a good power supply and having good cooling to dissipate the heat. It's just physics. Now of course laptop makers could do better with cooling solutions but they can't fix physics. So no if you want to do some fucking gaming get a regular PC.>>726100386Niggas be like niggas be like but they are the niggas that be like

>>726095102/thread
No. Laptops have become way better in recent years and have good hardware for gaming now. You just need to have awareness that you're buying a portable machine with limitations and not some pro water cooled gaming machine.I bought a LoQ and it can reach above 60 FPS on high settings in a bunch of games on high settings. Honestly just the fact I can play deep rock at constantly smooth frames and high detail is enough to me.>b-but heat and noiseIt's been acceptable for me, actually runs more cool than my old craptop. But a mistake many people make is that they don't realize laptops have a "turbo boost" mode that can cause the CPU to use way more power and by extent lead to noticeably higher noise and heat. I turned it off and it made my laptop run way smoother with no fps loss. Also laptops today generally have modes for low noise, high performance and balanced use, at least mine does.>but laptops die quicklyDon't be retarded and your laptop will last

>>726103035Most technological optimizations are done and over with so improvements have to be paid for again. Like with size. >>726099943>you can’t use it in publicI can and I have.
If you are too retarded to build a PC, laptops are there for you.
>>726094284Always have been. Always will be. Computers are tools. Laptops are tools. They are specifically business tools. They allow people to do Computer related work on a mobile device. Gaming is NOT A MOBILE ACTIVITY (I understand "Mobile Gaming" makes a large portion of gaming and gaming revenue but it's not all dollar signs when it comes to hobbies, only INDUSTRIES).Laptop Gaming is a meme more than a scam, but truly a self-scam because you are willingly paying for "convenience." The "convenience" of being able to play 2 hours of AoEII while at... I don't know... some event or convention.
>>726094284Yes.They always have been.
>>726104547>while at... I don't know... some event or convention.which at that point you should just be fucking enjoying your time there with your friends/partner.put the fucking games away and live.

>>726094284I had a Lenovo thinkpad and played games in ultra settings
>>726104681Why the past tense?
>>726094284they don't make it very clear on websites and spec sheets but a graphics card model for laptops like a 5070ti is not the same as a desktop 5070ti and only has like 1/2 the performnce with worse thermals
>>726094284Not if you buy one that doesn't make you look like a loser. You can use them for anything. If you don't plan on using it for work or college then just buy a pre built PC with a 4090. That will get you through all the golden age of gaming.
>>726104669My point is mobile gaming is a meme. You can meme about with your laptop playing some games no problem. I genuinely used to play AoEII at college between classes on my craptop. But that wasn't what it was for. It's like having snake on your old Nokia phone. It's nice, but that's all.
>>726104673Laptops aren't a scam.Gaming Laptops are.Gaming on a laptop isn't.Gaming Laptops are.If you want the best of both worlds, get a business laptop and an external thunderbolt GPU enclosure. The laptop will be 1000x better for the purpose of being a laptop, the GPU will be better since it's not locked down and thermal throttling and the whole setup is portable enough for taking to a mates house.
Kind ofOn the one hand, you can find laptops with a 4060 and a commensurate CPU for $700 or less on sale, which have a good bit more compute power and a better suite of drivers and graphics software than something like the Steam machine that everyone is soiying out over. Those parts also have a low enough TDP that you probably shouldn't run into any thermal issues if you pick something with liquid metal and a chassis with enough airflow. On the other hand, any models with a XX70, XX80 or XX90 series GPUs are misleading because(unlike the laptop 4060 and 5060), those GPUs are nowhere near their desktop equivalent, to the point where it is totally misleading to even call them the same model. The price also increases exponentially with these specs, and those graphics cards are also power hungry enough that thermals are liable to become an issue. So I think laptops on the $600-1000 range are a good product and charge a reasonable premium compared to an equivalently specced desktop solution(and at least you'll be getting a nice screen to make up for that), but the higher class desktops are significantly overpriced for what they offer. Just don't expect true portability from any laptop model, if you're not connected to a power outlet their gaming performance will be equivalent to that of a gaming handheld like a Steam Deck or ROG Ally
>>726094284Both the high end and the low end ones are a scam, cheap ones often use older and obsolete GPUs and have questionable build quality, price for high end ones scales exponentially you pay 5 grand for a "4090" and get the performance of a 4070 minus thermal throttle tax. If you get a good deal on something with a 4060 from a decent brand like Legion then it's not bad at all, the performance will be in the ballpark of the desktop equivalent, it will be great for 1080p and even serve as a mobile workstation for some lighter 3D modelling/gamedev/AI workloads. I'd say you really need to evaluate what your needs are, gaymen laptops have a specific use use case, that is if you travel often and need to have all your shit with you. If you aren't in that situation then build a normal PC and if you need a laptop for school or work get a normal laptop, grab a used Thinkpad if you're short on cash.
It's not about traveling or shit like that. I just wanna play games in bed.
>but what if I need to play games on the goIf I'm out of the house for more than a day it's either that I'm on vacation, visiting family or on a work trip and in these situations I'm never going to sit down at a desk or table and play a game. I genuinely don't see the point of them at all. If you don't want to build a pc you can buy a prebuilt and swap the laptop tax for the build cost and get much better specs.
>>726094284>"Bro I bought my gaming laptop for the portability">Can only play games plugged in anyway>Bulky as fuck >Start a game>Jet engine sounds start
Would you rather have a smaller dildo you can carry anywhere, or a giant dildo that is bolted onto your desk?
>>726094284Yes. And I don't mean "just get a desktop pc lol" I mean they intentionally cheap out on components and tier things in a way to force you to pay for more expensive models just to get something that costs $2 more but isn't included until you pay $1500 for other shit you don't need
My gaming laptops were both cheaper than the desktop equivalent. You couldn't have got that 10 years ago.
What company makes the best midrange gaming laptops these days?
They do what they advertise most of the times, the main issue is that the build quality is really subpar, so at best they'll last like two years tops, enough for the warranty to end.
>>726103035Thermodynamics. You can't cool a monster like that in a smaller form factor.
>>726105842I can pack up my laptop and take it with me so i can play vidya or work when I'm elsewhere. Thinking of actually coming over to my aunt and uncle for a week or so because I see them rarely, they're getting old and happily invited me to visitI could get into a train, set up my laptop in a room and play vidya/work while spending time with uncle and auntieNow tell me how could I do this easily if I had a bulky pc setup

I'd had an LOQ for the last year and it's fine for what I use it for. It's portable, runs everything I want to play well and seems reliable enough. I mainly play retro games though, so it's not like I'm putting any strain on it outside of Koikatsu in the evenings because for some reason it runs like shit on everything.
