How to write a convincing autist character? Something that doesnt seems like an offensive stereotype but still let's people know "oh that guys autistic"
>>
>>726094289
Often is enough to make the character weird.
They don't need to be fully retarded for it to work. Autists can be functional.
Like, a character that isn't even autistic canonically but could be interpreted as such, would be picrel (taking him from /a/ not sure of any /v/ example right now)
>>
>>726094289
You cant make an autistic character to cater the autist. They will cry about it not being gay enough or some shit and those who actually like it since they are autistic will not comment about it due to autism.
>>
>>726094289
you can't distinguish an autist character with a character that is just an NPC with low effort given to it so you should just avoid attempting to translate autism into a video game entirely.
>>
>>726094289
Just be yourself
>>
Make them
>very interested in a somewhat boring subject
>unable to grasp subtle social cues
>>
>>726094289
Depends on the character, naturally.

Are they aware of their difference from regular people? If not, they're likely either very child-like or callous, or both., which in turn may make them uninterested in society and either be a selfish kind of child-like person (mom said they are my legos) or be 24/7 a kid on a playground (do you wanna play legos together).

If they're aware of their what makes them different from regular people, they likely have some level of emotional intelligence, but can they do anything about it? Think of a psychopath or a sociopath that can mirror the way normal people speak, but every now and again when they have to go off-script they'll say or do something inappropriate, display a lack of empathy, remorse, etc. Someone aware of how they'll likely never be able to fit in will probably also try to act the way normal people do, but then inevitably fail at it.

Likely earlier than later, because while psychos can be very good at understanding the way others think, it's the one thing autists specifically are terrible at. So they'll likely always be off in some way, but importantly, not at the expense of their core personality (red legos are my favorite - but how is that relevant to this conversation).

Which they should have as any other character.
>>
Desiring to even write an autist character is a malevolent act on your part. It's the same as the difference between a Jap's desire to draw a talented and highly sexy woman vs a feminist commie's desire to draw a realistic shenigger.
Write talented heros or starry eyed kids with a plan and spring in their step.
Fiction is for idealization, not realism.
>>
>>726094554
My liege!
>>
>>726094289
Make them look slightly retarded like real autists can
>>
>>726094289
You know how you keep asking this question even though you've gotten dozens of fucking answers? Have your retard character do that.
>>
>>726094289
Give him an obsession with some dumb kids' thing. He also should be the guy who knows a lot of random, mostly "useless" shit.

Also, I don't think I'm gonna have an excuse to share this thought so I'm gonna put it out here. In this one EBlike: HorrorVale, Beatrice, one of the party members, is an autist. It's never outright stated, but it's hinted at with the subtlety of a freight train. Everything you can read about the 'tistic in a pamphlet: the routines, the disdain for noise and crowds, is something that in a lot of her lines. But something that would be like 10% more subtle and utilize the fact she's a vampire (Dracula's great granddaughter btw) is using those rules vampires have. The bullshit ones. Like not being able to cross running water, not being able to enter a house without permission, needing to count spilled rice. Tell me that wouldn't fit perfectly.

why?

>Fiction is for idealization, not realism.
Characters need to feel somewhat real if you want anyone to care about them in any meaningful way

Be autistic, that way every single character you ever write will be one too, since it's impossible to write someone with social skills when you don't have any

Basically this. Slightly awkward and only opens up talking about weird niche things like old cartoons or arcade games or trains.

Make them unreasonable whiny and annoying. That's what "high functioning" autists are. Because whenever I talk about my Oshi they start to get uncomfortable and started getting their nannies to torment me.

Have you ever met anyone who has faked being autistic?
I grew up with it so I was lumped in alot of special classes with other kids with autism, some had it alot worse than I, Kids which couldn't function unless they were with someone they trusted or had some safety item, years of learning how to mask it and basic social interactions helped drill in what shit makes you stand out even if afterwards I feel fucking exhausted but most people I talk to don't even think i'm autistic now so thats good, its made me realize what some autistic cues are and when people are lying about it. I'd probably some autistic cues are-
>Hyperfixation on a topic and talking about it in vivid detail while failing to understand the other party doesn't know anything about it.
>Oversharing not in a tramadumping fashion but moreso happy to be able to talk about things in their life which has effected them
>Frustration when they dont get the chance to talk or do something they like when the option is presented
>Extreme fatigue when things get too loud or overstimulating.
>Failing to pick up on social cues and body language
>Usually asking for people to clarify things again in a different way to try visualize it better.

Quiet one second and loud and epic random big chungus the second.

I feel Laios fits the bill pretty well.
I know most people say L is also autistic but its been ages since I saw Death Note so I'll need to double check.

There was this one autist in my class that loved to ramble (most annoyingly, infodump like those youtube shorts whatever subject he or someone mention, no matter if I knew about it or even more than him.), and I loved to give him the most retarded takes possible, the guy was incapable of noticing I was fucking with him.

In my experience, super autists are either scared cats incapable of talking or complete obnoxious shitheads obcessed with their bs and zero social awareness.

>>726114515
Yes, learn to shut up and listen, converse, . Nobody is invested as you in your interests and nobody enjoys listen to your inane rambling, stop treating people's ear as toilets.

Autism is a very broad spectrum, you can get a dude that really loves a specific Linux distribution or something like Chris Chan who is far past gone in many ways
But regardless a common trend is they really like what they like but ultimately are extremely apathetic towards other things, they generally make mistakes often when socializing and have a hard time connecting with others
Just a character that seems shy and is extremely knowledgeable or good at a couple things works, anything more will look like you're flanderizing it

I agree with you. The difference between normies and autists is that autists at least has a subject, normies only talk about one thing, themselves.
>>
>>726113283
funnily enough your post is a good example. make them constantly ask everyone to explain themselves like annoying 4 year olds saying WHY over and over.

Most examples of good autistic protagonists I know of are ambiguously autistic. Like, fittingly, Kris from Deltarune. I can't think of anybody that is described in the narrative as autistic that I really liked.
>>
>>726110828
I read through DN recently and L does not give me autist vibes. He has a great understanding of peoples' feelings, consistently is able to read the room, and he doesn't have any weird obsessions besides liking sweets which is given a semi-logical explanation. It honestly feels like he is fucking with everyone 90% of the time and half the weird shit he does is him manipulating or fucking with people.

L is more like Light; He is detached from others and bored. Except unlike Light who cares about putting on airs L just wants to challenge himself and will do anything to gain a mental advantage.
>>
>>726110648
That only applies to a subset of autists who are willing to socialise/communicate with others, but are bad at it due to their lack of social skills, there are plenty of autists who will refuse to be the one to initiate a conversation, or want to hold a conversation with someone else unless they consider it to be "important" in some way, at which point sure they will discuss the topic in excruciating detail to try and fully elaborate on this to the individual that engaged in the conversation, and will try to make sure that they are listening as this autist hates having to repeat themselves as it means having to talk more, instead of being able to engage in whatever it is they are doing.
