This is really apples and oranges. Dragon Quest games are all designed with the intention of being grindy and having simple and slow stories in order to evoke a "classical" feeling as if reading an old folk tale. DQ has lots of gear to find and equip, but is usually fairly simple and has little build variety.

Final Fantasy is designed to be a no-grind experience with world-threatening stakes brought about in a usually convoluted manner so that the reveal isn't obvious until the later game. FF has very little gear to equip, with many games only having one or two slots, but has relatively complex character upgrade systems that allow for a lot of customization (materia, grids, etc.)

They're both singleplayer niggas-in-a-row RPGs (at least until FF became more of an action game series), but play extremely differently. I like both for different things.
