Nor is there any reason to cut down trees to make a bridge, or use stealth to set traps, or build a fire to survive the cold, or use 90% of the game's mechanics because there is always a much easier way that is taught to you in the very beginning.Every location can be reached with with gliding.Every enemy can be easily defeated with whackingEvery environmental hazard has a piece of clothing that makes it disappearIt's a shit game.

The rest of those things, you're right, there's not much reason to do them, because they don't offer you any real advantage and they're also not really fun. But shield surfing is fun. In my opinion, most of the reason BOTW is fun is because of the movement. It's better than other open world games because it's simply fun to traverse the world, and shield surfing is part of that.
