Aside from the underwater segments, what the fuck is it about this game that makes it so good?

To put it shrimply, Raiden is a great character and for some reason chuds think that because Snake was in the first and only game before it he's supposed to be the poster boy for the series. What a joke.

Great level design
Comfy research station/military base is a great setting.
Plausible sci fi tech concepts
The theme of information and memes touch the human need to leave a legacy after death.

I don't know yet I haven't beaten the first one

I see both sides. The switcheroo has to happen for the game to work, but given all the marketing material and the intro was playing as snake, I get why people were pissed even 5-10 years after release. I say all this as someone who was 13 on release, me and a friend stayed up all night on speed and beat it.

It's not good. In fact it's blatantly the worst of the first 3 games. Literally more time spent in codec calls than actually playing the game, no footsteps and poor guard placement/AI means you can simply run past most guards, repetitive as hell having you go through the same rooms over and over, and the story is legitimately retarded on so many fronts.
The game is only fondly remembered because the last 20 minutes of it made surface level remarks on information distribution in the digital age and sense of self, and for the 13 year olds playing this at the time that seemed incredibly profound.

I don't think it's that. It might not have the level variety or characterization of 3 or the same gripping plot as 1. But I believe that out of all the mainline games barring 4 and 5, this is the one that has aged well the most.

1 as a game at the time has been overshadowed by better-designed stealth games like Thief I and II. 3 is mogged by Splinter Cell: Chaos Theory, which came out the following year. The corny soap opera was good at the time. But better games have come and taken its place.

2 feels like the one that can truly be considered "perfect:" https://youtu.be/-gGLvg0n-uY?si=EbD7QjJELvayKRKi

1 has backtracking too albeit not as much as 2 I agree. 3 has the plot of a WSJ manga vs. 1 & 2's Seinen-tier plots.

Buzzwords aside, pretty sure this has something to do with Shuyo Murata being on the team.
