>but the price! whats the point!?
You just don't get it. Is about convenience and ease of use. Computers are still too complicated for the average person. Steam Machines are plug and play, like consoles but it has almost ALL the games. This is going to eat consoles alive.

Consolefags don't care about any of that though, they only care about buying a machine with a low entry cost that can play FIFA and CoD

That might've been a good point if prebuilts weren't a thing, it isnt the 2010s anymore, you can get pretty decent prebuilts at reasonable prices

it was 2015 retard not 2017
proton wasn't made yet so out of the box it was limited to basically just native linux compatible games now you can play almost anything
steam has also made a lot of great update to the steam big pic mode (original steam machine had the 2012 big pic mode that as duct taped together)
It will not fail this time they have improved their biggest flaws
>>
>>726107395
They aren't trying to get people who already have PCs and use steam, they're trying to get the normies who think the whole "actually having games" thing is cool but are too intimidated by PC and it's options and would welcome the option of just buying a gabecube they can plug into their tv. My buddy with the most xbro normie tier taste in gaming who doesn't even own so much as a laptop was super excited about it.

>>

>>
>>726106835
Claiming that it'll compete with consoles is bullshit because the marketing alone doesn't compete with consoles.

Here's how they'd market it if it was for consoles.
Start off with Gears of War, moves into God of War, moves into Halo, into Ghost of Tsushima, into Space Marine 2, into Helldivers 2, into Cyberpunk, into BG3, into Escape from Tarkov, into Arc Raiders, REPO, Peak.
Then there'd be 3 games per row and it'd scroll down with a bunch of big games on Steam. "Play it all on your Steam Machine"

Console marketing is a lot more action. It completely lacks the action that gets someone excited to play the games that they'll be able to play.

Just set up a plex server, unless your PC is ass or you rely on shitty wifi it'll be fine without anything local. If you do need it local, yes you can still just install a media player and codecs via desktop mode. Storage might be an issue if you like lossless audio and best quality available video, so you'll want an external drive for series etc.

They can be if you are willing to be a steam-only new user only playing what is verified.

As soon as you want to move beyond that and need to mess around in desktop mode, it all falls apart. Steam OS really does give you back what you are willing to put in

Its going to cost 400 and everyone here will buy it

Why wouldn't it
>>
>>726124890
You are delusional if you expect anything under 700. 800 feels like a good spot before prices get absurd.
>>
>>726106835
>full gaming PC
why not just buy a gaming PC right now?
>>
>>726125026
>no windows license
>they can sell at cost because they profit off steam sales
they could definitely compete with consoles if they wanted
>>
>>726107308
>competitive with PCs
800 dollars with controller included then
>>
>>726125458
Because if I boughted a pre-built gaming pc, you would all bully me for buying a pre-built.
>>
>the significantly more powerful machines that cost less and one of them has exclusives are now obsolete because of a piece of shit that will likely suffer horrendous QC issues just like the steam deck does because valve doesn't know shit about releasing hardware
Ok
>>
>>726106835
>literally just a PC
Completely pointless product
>>
>>726125691
The steam machine IS just a pre-built
The worst kind of pre-built at that, since the CPU and GPU aren't upgradeable
>>
>>726106835
so a PC? a thing that already exists?
Look I'm not saying the steam machine will flop but it won't make consoles obsolete either you lunatic. As always, exclusives will determine their success. If anything the steam machine will eat the space left by the xbox, which wasn't that big anyway.
>>
>>726125542
They could, but they won't. It's too risky to sell something so experimental at a loss, especially in the middle of a console generation when they don't expect people to be upgrading in the first place.

I suspect this first model is specifically for enthusiasts, and future models, once the hardware is proven successful, will be the one to try and compete with consoles directly

GOOD MORNING SAAR
GOOD TO SEE YOU ASSEMBLY

>since the CPU and GPU aren't upgradeable
So its a prebuilt PC with all of the disadvantages of a console. Why not just get a gaming PC
>>
It's not to compete with consoles, and it's not to complete with gaming PCs.

This is for teenagers who would normally be buying Alienware laptops or prebuilt Walmart brand ""Gaming Computer"'.
I'm sure they are also interested in the ps5 owners who were always curious about modding and emulation, but it doesn't seem to be the priority for now
>>
>>726106835
something I keep hearing people say is that the Steam Machine will allowed developers to finally have a unified platform for development so everything will be more optimized but wouldnt the Steam Machine need to sell tens of millions of copies?

The Steamdeck exists and developers slap on "verified for steamdeck but runs at 20fps lowest settings"
>>
>>726126661
>I suspect this first model is specifically for enthusiasts, and future models, once the hardware is proven successful, will be the one to try and compete with consoles directly
yeah i agree with you, there's no sense in competing with 5 year old consoles that are already entrenched.
the smart move would probably to release the steam machine 2 whenever the ps6 comes out.

>Right. I keep forgetting that half the population actually has an IQ less than 100.
Most people aren't tech dorks, my guy. It ain't about IQ, but interest. They ain't interested in tech like you, so they don't know. Hating on them just because they ain't you makes you the asshole no matter what.
>>
>>726127264
>release the steam machine 2 whenever the ps6 comes out.
Exactly. Thats the one to actually sell at a loss and win console gamers over with
>>
>>726106951
Yea, I've done that one my deck.
Why did you think that it would be an issue?
>>
>>726127153
devs have already been targeting ps5 hardware for years, this changes nothing.

MinisForum 790S7 ($900)
32GB RAM
1TB SSD
RTX 4060
Ryzen 9 7940HX

Overall a device almost 2x more powerful than Steam Machine (2x better CPU, 1.5x better GPU, 2x the memory).
This MinisForum PC is just one of many examples. Given the fact that 1.5x-2x better devices exist at the 800-900 USD price point, the Steam Machine's price point that makes the most sense would be $500-$600 for the cheaper model.

Valve wants to sell this as the "best bang for buck" device just like they did with the Steam Deck which outperformed $1000 handhelds. Likewise the Steam Machine will be a $500 device which outperforms $700 devices (plenty of PC listings with the $700 price tag have the exact performance as the projected performance of the Steam Machine).
