Photo realism is the perfect money printer.

It is impossible to achieve. We instinctively know when something is off for one reason or another and graphics will always trigger that somewhere. So more expensive rendering techniques get used which needs more expensive hardware to run.
It's the perfect loop. Update graphics -> need higher hardware -> update graphics -> need higher hardware

It's also a cheat for devs. Instead of learning about art direction and making a choice that may or may not fail, just let the users hardware calculate it and when they complain you can simply blame existing rendering techniques and hardware limits. You cut down on dev time and get an easy out for criticism.
