Its interesting to me that Gabe basically admitted that HL2 was a tech demo and they scrapped HL3 because they ran out of tech to demo. It's the same problem Pixar had where all of their classic movies were advances in CGI that were later aped for Marvel, and once they ran out of innovations the scripts dried up too.
