About to play this for the first time what should I expect?

Lots of walking, wondering where to go, reading the journal. Cliffracers.
It's a good idea to go to start with Balmora first and do some quests for the factions here. Also, make sure to start with some good Agility (regardless of class) to avoid MISS MISS MISS and manage your stamina.

I'll add to this that you should make sure to wind up your attacks, unless you're using something like a dagger. The weapon's damage range is not random, if you fully wind up your attack you'll do max damage each time. That's why the damage ranges are usually so big, like 1-50, with the main exceptions being fast weapons, which tend to have a higher minimum damage since you're meant to spam them.

make an orc with strength and agility or speed for your chosen attributes, steed sign and prepare for maximum zooming, alternatively choose lady sign for ez mode endurance maxxing for the most hp, don't worry too much about minmaxing your level ups just make sure you have some misc skills in all the attributes you want to focus that aren't hard to find trainers for and spend some of your gold on trying to get x3-x5 in them every level

you can use the mages guild teleports without being a member

magic can be extremely broken good in morrowind with very little effort, boots of blinding speed + 100% for 1x magick resist spell + 1pt constant levitate enchant and you are basically noclipping around the entire map

Agility barely matters.
1 point of weapon skill is 1% hit chance
5 points of agility is 1% hit chance
Just make sure one of your weapon skills is at a decent level and you're good.

Magic is not that challenging, you can kill most ez stuff with starter spells very easily. But it is somewhat complicated and there are a lot of possibilities, many of which are useless. Still, it's playable for a first-timer. The Apprentice is a good sign. The weakness to magicka does almost nothing in morrowind as it only applies to "magic" damage and debuffs, which are rare/inconsequential.

Not really. It may suck at first, since you don't have much mana and not many ways to restore it. There are ways to work around that, for instance the Atronach sign. Which could be "too gamey" for some tastes.
After a while, you can become insanely powerful.
It may still be a good idea to invest character creation into some melee skill. You don't to waste your spells on some mudcrabs.

don't be afraid to use a map if you get lost. the directions npcs give you are often really shit. i was able to go mapless on my first playthrough but i wouldn't recommend it to others.
