what went wrong?

I watched two seasons of Red vs Blue before realizing it was a horseshit and stopped watching and never had any interest in anything else they ever did. It was novel at the time, having characters act out a series in a cinematic dialogue perspective with the hud elements cropped out and they bobbed their heads up and down as they spoke.
>>
Combination of things. Some of their best talent left for one reason or another, their work culture and relative lack of care of employees at times was criticized, and also the YouTube algorithm stopped being kind to them. And because YT is more convenient, and their player was notoriously bad, people didn't really want to use the site. The 'video a day or week early for FIRST' killed a lot of discussion / investment people had. They also gutted the forums. And their new hires were generally mediocre at best.

It got too big for their own good. Had they just done Achievement Hunter and Red vs Blue, and not become a corporate owned by Warner Bros (who's still in like $35 billion and is about to be bought by Paramount), they would still be around.

If followed the natural path for any successful independent company that relies on creative endeavors.
>Be a small scale success
>Start expanding
>Hit the level where the original creators and leaders no longer are capable of expanding the company themselves efficiently enough to surpass a bottleneck
>Sell to a bigger company to get more resources
>Founders who are now rich abandon the company one by one
>Company implodes because it no longer has its leadership
>Company lacks the independence to properly downscale instead of just being shuttered by the parent company.
>>726709717
The producer was leeching resources from their actually successful show in RWBY under the table to make it.
>>
>>726709684
Probably not. Even if they only did RvB and Achievement Hunter like you said, Halo still would have gone the way of being utterly fucking irrelevant, and Machinima still would have vanished into the ether. RvB existed at an extremely specific time of the internet that we can quite literally never go back to unfortunately, and it can never be recreated.
>>
I can pinpoint the EXACT moment it went to shit, and it's when they renamed "Drunk Tank" to "RT Podcast" for marketing purposes. Fucking soulless.
>>
>>726708494
They sold out. Never, EVER let yourself be bought by something bigger. You will always lose your autonomy, and inevitably be discarded when the parent company deems you no longer useful. I don't know why this lesson hasn't been ingrained in every single business owner's mind yet.

Because the end goal is to retire with all the money you get from selling the company.
Businesses are not a source of legacy to most people. Meaning that you either need the sociopathic number go up brain, or its all to tap out once you reach a point where you can relax and spend all day drinking, while your kids college to some kind of liberal arts school is paid for.

This thread has happened several times but it's generally agreed upon that the problem (unfortunately) started with hiring Monty Oum and starting to take themselves too seriously and being "above" gaming, and the total implosion at the end was just a result of fully getting the same cancer infection that every online media company dealt with when they hired a bunch of violently untalented goons that attacked their community under the vague accusations of "racism" or "bigotry" rather than the actual issue that they weren't very good at their jobs.
Not to mention google dropped their nepotism for their sake around the same time.
>>
They just got too big and successful to stay good, that's all you have to say
>>
>>726711280

>RvB existed at an extremely specific time of the internet that we can quite literally never go back to unfortunately, and it can never be recreated.
this is sad when you think about it, like if you can't recreate something good from years ago it's a good sign society had declined and is worse than before

I hate this pattern, you see it all the time, an "innocent" channel makes good shit and is only focusing on entertaining people, and once it starts being big and relevant they feel it's the right time to spread their propaganda and kill their product, why are they like this
>>
Remember when Geoff was crying on stream about black people lmao imagine letting yourself get cucked that bad
>>726708494
They hired a bunch of activist nigs and fags and acted like they wouldn't turn on the company immediately for a crumb of clout. Plus a lot of the core team members left.
>>
>>726711880
I still like Craig, and I think the dude's heart is in the right place, but unfortunately you pretty much cannot talk about the current state of video games without addressing so many of these pressing issues. What kinda killed Side Scrollers for me though is that they delved way too deep into the political side because it's what obviously gets them views, so now it feels like the video game portion plays second fiddle to the political nonsense. It's just exhausting, because generally speaking its typically the most layman takes imaginable that are already being said better by other people who are actually knowledgeable about these things, so having Joe Schmoe saying it really doesn't add anything you couldn't get elsewhere.

>>726712025
>propaganda
Maybe a certain side shouldn't have been the ones forcing it first so they wouldn't get this type of response. Sadly video games have only increased their political footprint since GamerGate, and 2020-2023 is when shit really hit the fan.
>>
>>726712073
Fucking hated Geoff by the end.
>>
>>726708494
All I remember about their demise is thhat Achievement Hunter shot themselves in the foot when they refused to let Ray (who by that point was visibly sick of the job) stream part time. He then proceeded to quit and it was never the same.
>>
too much reliance on a single game IP that died lmao
>>
>>726713256
>too much reliance
to be fair it was their only true golden goose so obviously they're not letting that leave
>>
>>726712175
>but unfortunately you pretty much cannot talk about the current state of video games without addressing so many of these pressing issues.
I get that part, it's kind of baked into the cake with the industry nowadays ever since Gamergate was a thing and a bunch of hyper-polarized folks got big jobs in the games industry, but it's just exhausting, like you said, going from being on a near-constant news binge, you pick something hobby-related to cool down, and oops, it's also a news binge that got co-opted by someone who wasn't even there to begin with and is now using it to propel their career and brand higher than before. It just sucks, I miss podcasts that'd just dedicate an episode to a single game and talk about that for an hour or so, it's comfy if you're a fan, or maybe you find something new to play if you aren't.

It's funny when I think about it, because I'd consider the likes of like Pat and Woolie of CSB a lot more charged up on culture war shit sometimes, and even they don't immediately turn the dial to 11 and start in with that almost immediately, it's just "Oh hey, here's what I played/watched this week, let's talk about it."

You see it happen all the time man.
>>
>>726708494
Believe it or not, all the problems started bubbling to the surface right around the time they hired Kdin. (Who I was familiar with under the name Tatsudoshi at the time.)
That's when the Tumblr rot started to set in and spread. And I wouldn't be surprised if Kdin was patient zero.

And by Tumblr rot, I don't mean progressive beliefs in general. I mean a specific and pervasive culture of mutual manipulation and corruption. Something which progressives at large are only starting to recognize, what was originally meant when things were called "Woke." Before it began to be watered down to mean "Things I disagree with."

And that is the weaponization of the Progressive Stack and grievance hierarchy. Nitpicking of jokes, constructive dismissal of talent, protecting actual predators and creeps while closely policing employees' opinions for wrongthink or potentially controversial content.

Rooster Teeth gutted their core products' humor and presentation, expanded way too quickly, and sold out to mainstream entertainment, all while intentionally covering for at least two legitimate sexual predators.

It hit the mainstream with Occupy Wall Street. It was deliberately propped up through a coalition of the US Government and multiple major financial institutions including Wells Fargo, BNY Mellon, JP Morgan Chase and Bank of America. They paid radical agitators to hijack the messaging, and later hired them on.

The backlash from the 2008 financial crisis went from complaints about bailouts, subprime lending, and lack of sufficient oversight in various speculative markets, to being about representation of minorities and access to loans and credit. It went from things that would hurt the financial industry's bottom line if they had to capitulate, to things they could game to make even more money, while still losing a lot of heat for *appearing* to capitulate.

Back in the day it was necessary for creatives to join a network to receive ad revenue which necessitated groups like Rooster Teeth or Machinima to file paperwork for them.

Later, many of these writers and performers were poached by legacy media to work for them instead. The talent was bled dry, and then youtube allowed individuals to receive ad revenues directly from Google which was the killing blow for these networks. Happened to Escapist Magazine as well.
>>
>>726717796
2016 was a redpilled year for me. Many YouTubers I thought were normal turned out not to be. Trump was the catalyst that made them drop their masks.
>>
>>726717938
Get a threadmill or bike at home, doesn't have to be an expensive one but get one that has good reviews. Your body won't give you energy unless you train it to excpect to need it. Play some games or watch something while you do a moderate walk that gets your heart pumping for an hour a day.
Or ust take some walks outside for an hour, but walk up some hills so your heart pumps
If your body is used to not doing anything and feeling like shit, it will just continue to do so
>>

what do you mean by that? I think you put a finger on something interesting yeah, making collective group isn't sustainable financially in this day and age unfortunately
>>
>>726718287
Idk, i think what people want to watch has just shifted. Vtubers are usually in a big group with managers and such for example and that's big. Newer generations just care more about seeing someone play games live and being able to interact with them directly, let's plays just aren't interactive enough for them
>>
>>726718435
>Newer generations just care more about seeing someone play games live and being able to interact with them directly, let's plays just aren't interactive enough for them
I think it's linked to the fact this new generation is the lonelilest of them all, so to them it feels like they have an actual friend they spend good video game time with, it's sad because the majority of twitch stremers are just snakes who just take advantage of those people, something is deeply broken in this society, I blame social media for that
>>
>>726718287
I mean that instead of signing a predatory yearly contract with an agency that collects a cut of all the earnings your videos produce (remember if the video flops and makes no views you dont still get paid) you can effectively cut out the middleman and just work for yourself/youtube directly, which is precisely why the agency model died.

>>726718435

Nah, fuck off fag, the show was comfy when it was Craig, Blabs, and Razorfist, cause Razor had an off switch and knew when to talk about vidya and talk about anything else. We've had the blow-up doll fox co-op the show, and now we're full politics to the point there's entire eps dedicated to Hasan Piker and the Epstien files. Learn to separate your hobbies from the news, it's healthier.

I remember absolutely nothing about Red vs Blue other than the concept. If you ever watched RWBY you should excise yourself from the gene pool.
>>
>>726720851
He was like 15 or so when he first started interacting with them, and then started helping with rvb after a bit and flew over sometimes for rvb and the podcast, but not an actual employee. But his biggest success is slow mo guys and it's what made him most of his wealth, he started that channel to get enough work experience and credentials for his application to get a workers visa to be able to join rt but he did slow mo stuff before that as well, he worked in the uk doing slow mo on shows and movies, from what i remember it was because he befriended some guy who got him into the industry and let him work with the phantom camera and his references from that work was used to get his workers visa as well. rt itself was always more of a fun side thing for him. so he did stuff for rt for many years, but he didn't join them fully until he was around 20, around 2012

>RWBY
It always struck me as 40 year olds trying to make an anime rip off, but they had only seen a couple scenes from battle Shonen and watched the entirety of several French cartoons.
>>
>>726721398
>the first seasons were actually pretty good
it's always funny when people say this. i loved Monty and respected his work and energy, but rwby was always shit that was just an excuse for Monty to do fighting scenes, the writing is abyssmal and the show looks like shit early 2000s diusney channel budget 3d show
>>
>>726721558
when I first saw rwby my university flatmates were watching it in the living room and I assumed it was some tales of/bandai namco game only to find out it was some hideous anime knockoff
>>
>>726721558
>but rwby was always shit that was just an excuse for Monty to do fighting scenes
I don't agree, even when there weren't fighting scenes it was good, I loved the dynamics between the 4 main characters, it was funny and interesting to look at
>>
>>726721558
>just an excuse for Monty to do fighting scenes
That's what Red vs. Blue became. I understand why people liked him but in my mind his hiring was the beginning of the steep quality decline in their flagships.
>>
>>726721905
Yeah i wasn't a fan of all the cgi fighting scenes being pushed into rvb, that was around the time i stopped watching it. The writing also tried to be too serious and complex, which they clearly weren't capable of or what i at least wanted from rvb

I feel like the major problem with RWBY is how people refuse to see it for what it was, silly shit about cute anime girls fucking shit up. There is nothing more to it, and there doesn't need to be. I wish later creators understood it too, instead it got turned into some lame highschool melodrama.
>>
>>726722027
The mercenary idea was fine when it was a single super serious competent soldier being compared to the bumbling retardation of the main cast. I don't really know how it developed in the later years. I did watch a later episode but I had no idea what was going on and it was so drama focused that the few jokes felt really out of place.
>>
>>726708494
They killed Monty Oum
>>
>>726722116
I think they felt they run out of ideas, like if you want to make something like k-on, it shouldn't be more than 2 seasons, after that you don't really know what to do with them anymore, since they aimed for something with a lot of seasons they had no choice but to raise the stakes
>>

Yeah that's even sadder. Once the political climate changed during 2016 they just slowly lost their edge and just got so deflated. They didn't even go so much the route of rt where they went full on shouting about leftist shit, but just got too scared of stepping out of line with anything anymore, too scared of making any splashes anywhere

I've seen this play out several times. Its a mix of hobbyists trying to go pro without knowing how too + getting way too much money without a proper tardwrangler. The decline noticably began when they started doing the newer generation of RvB with animations and shit, also RWBY.

I partly agree but I'm talking more about overall flow of the show. Early seasons operated more on comedy logic and rule of cool than any common sense, and I feel this was always the intention to being with, to be closer in spirit to stuff like Asura's Wrath, TTGL, MGR etc. And I think it still could've been done, though I suppose you'd need someone who actually loves that shit to make it happen.

They were large enough before selling out to have an entire convention with 30,000 attendees and a completely self sufficient platform through their website/own subscription service. They grew enough of a fanbase that they didn't need Halo or Machinima to be mega popular for them to exist. They weren't riding their coattails after around 2010. But they weren't content with just making internet content and having a podcast; they wanted to be a fucking movie studio so they sold out, became an asset to a larger company, recklessly expanded, started having controversy after controversy, lost profitability, got handed around like a cheap whore by CBS, and eventually died.

There is only 1 good RWBY episode and its like I think season 2 episode "Paint the Town" becasue it actually FELT like an anime it was just a simple episode of the girls investigating something, the male characters bumbling around like an actual mahou shoujo anime and then the episode ends with a big chase/fight scene. Its unironically the only good episode in the entire shows existence
>>
I never followed them much, but I did like Achievement Hunter for a few years. Did some good LPs like the Resi2/Resi3 remakes, the Mario Party stuff, the TTT/Murder stuff, and all the GTAV vids.

But there was absolutely a point where the diversity hires (like that woeful idiot Fiona) started getting force-injected to their vids, and it was like watching a healthy guy get blasted with Chernobyl-levels of radiation. So many vids just started becoming unwatchable. the moral of the story is that you should have as few people as possible in your crib, I hate the "the more the merrier" mentallity, it's not true, you have more chance to end up with libtards who were just hiding their true personality at the begining, when there's few of them you can focus on them more
