The problem with games as a medium is that a lot of the historically important titles don't hold up. That's because of technological limitations back in the day plus improvements to gameplay and writing that have been made since those games came out. That's not true of all very old games, but for a shocking number of titles that people refer to as "classic". Despite that, you still have retards ranking some old e.g. Nintendo title as the best game of all time, despite the fact that said title has been essentially made obsolete in all aspects. That's not to say that every big new game that releases these days is good. Far from it. Most of them are kinda dogshit desu. Idk, go play Dark Souls or something. That one holds up. Yes, it's challenging, but that's a good compromise for engaging gameplay. And it's not so ball-bustingly hard that you'll be stuck on one thing for a week. You can also just buy and play the remastered version without having to fiddle with emulators or file editing like many much older games require. As a bonus, every hack game journalist since the dawn of time has been describing everything as "the Dark Souls of X", and it's frequently mentioned in gaming discussions, so you can be a part of the conversation after playing it. If you find it too frustratingly hard, then you can leave it for now, go play something else, and come back to it some other time.

Citizen Kane is fucking boring if you watch it after watching many of the other historically important titles that have been released since it came out. It introduced many storytelling techniques, which were revolutionary at the time, but to a modern viewer that's been watching movies that have been inspired by it their whole life, it seems basic. That's the curse of very influential revolutionary media. It just seems kinda generic after some time passes and there are other titles that took the same techniques and expanded on them.
