Playing D1ablo 1 as a kid was terrifying

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=B8klPYjS3ws
>>
I remember at the store when I was a kid with some money I had enough to either get Total Annihilation of Diablo. I mean, I enjoyed TA but looking back I wish I had gone with Diablo. I did later go on to buy Diablo 2 on release day but I was almost out of my teens by then.

This sound crazy on vinyl for the record (no pun intended)

Its kino but the gameplay just isnt very good. still a good time just to enjoy for the atmosphere and style
>>

beat both D1 and D2 this month, D1 is so much better it's not even funny
>>
>>726773995
D2 fags never shut the fuck up every thread but the truthnuke is that D1 was always king.
>>
>>726773995
1 has a better atmosphere
2 has a better gameplay
>>
I love the lore behind the butcher... I always wondered what the deal is with Wort the peg leg kid... Turns out him and his friends were playing inside the crypt when they stumbled upon the butchers room, they were all killed except for Wort who had one leg cut off by the butcher and was just about to get slaughtered and was saved by Griswold.

I remember playing so much that I had a dream where I was down in those tunnels. Not as my character, but as me. It was pitch black and I could just hear all kinds of noises and howls of pain coming from the absolute darkness and I was just cowering under a lamp wondering if it was better to stay in the light where they could see me, or risk hiding in the dark where i couldn't see it coming.
It was a really vivid dream and I remember waking up in a cold sweat gasping for air.
>>
>>726773995
D1 doesn't have a necromancer
>>
>>726774224
1's gameplay is better too though. 2 is only superior in build variety but that wouldn't work with 1's style anyway
>>
is hellfire worth playing?

Is D2R worth it if I want to play with the Legacy graphics, or am I better off downloading an older version?
>>
>>726774778
yes, I did that and it's worth it
>>
>>726774778
It's the exact same game
>>
>>726774778
Download the older version. D2R is noticeably slower if playing on original graphics
>>
>>726774906
I only ask because I read someone say they were made purposely shittier or something, something about the resolution. If it still looks fine, I might bite the bullet.
>>
>>726775027
I also heard about this too, something about because the HD graphics still had to be loaded that loading screens take longer.
>>
>>726774778
Isn't there some autism based fanmade project for diablo 2? You might try that but I can't remember the name sorry. I understand it has online ladders and everything
>>
>>726774778
it has balancing and "QoL" changes, but most of that might also be from the newer patches for the actual D2
>>
Butcher was definitely a spoopy core memory as the kids say didn't expect that shit coming out of moms Windows 95 dell.
>>
I played a warrior and was really into the succubus enemies in hell. I wanted to see their models but I also didn't want to eat 20 energy bursts to the face.
..but I really wanted to see the succubus monster.

I was pretty bummed out, but the demon who nicked it up from the ground was happier to get it than me recovering it, so it's okay.
>>
>>726776256
Still a thing of beauty. I like how everyone worries about how characters or monsters are dressed nowadays while back then we were burying our face in bare titties.
>>
>>726776340
No item highlight is probably my only big gripe with the game. Trying to fish out a ring (without Alt) that fell out from a monster and ended up behind some sprite is literal torture. How did they miss this shit during testing.
>>

tears in the rain, nigga

>Its kino but the gameplay just isnt very good.
I don't think it's that bad. I actually liked having to chase down some enemies, using the environment to create chokepoints, etc. I liked the feeling of mostly just going through the dungeon down into hell.

My only real issue with it is that harder sections just became a loop of burn through potions -> go back to town for more potions -> return to dungeon. It didn't feel like there was much of a test of skill. There's probably not much you can really do about it, Diablo 2 still had the same issue sometimes.
>>
>try belzebub mod
>doesn't let you manually save anymore, have to reach waypoints to act as checkpoints
shit is ass

seeing arnold schwarzenegger as the barbarian's character select pic was funny though
>>
>>726779175
Copy what exactly? Atmosphere? Yes, more game should. Gameplay? Diablo 1 is so simplistic I don't know why you would want to
>>
>>726776528
I kinda like it. Makes you have to actually listen for things dropping and trying to find it in the dark and mess feels fitting. There's something a little annoying about just holding alt and spamming click on everything.
>>
>>726773789
By the time D2 came out I was able to buy my own games, but there was a time where games that even tripped the religious zealot trigger in my mom's brain would cause her to freak out. I remember her not letting me but Earthbound at a flea market because the big box has the word "psychic" on the back.
>>
>>726780898
because it's an actual dungeon crawler and not a top-down musou game like 2
>>
>>726773789
My mom liked horror movies and books, so she didn't mind stuff like that.
>>
>>726774224
>>726773995
D3 is better than both

I fear I'll never hear a better town's theme within my life time.
>>
>>726771114
the d1 church setting where you descend deeper and deeper into hell is way more spooky than d2
>>
>>726773789
My mom was in the "it's a video game, how bad can it be?" mindset. So I got lucky.
>>
>>726771114
i played it at age 8 and it wasn't scary, just cool
>>
>>726779175
there's that one game that an anon made
>>
>>726784815
which one
>>
>>726773789
Based.

I was meh after it turned out to have a bad ending. And after a while the gameplay gets really old, too. And the Jewishness of the whole thing is also kinda meh. But hey, it was the 90s.

Should I play Bard or Mage next run
>>
>>726781760
Its kind of strange how everything nowadays just ramps up the stakes like crazy. Nothing is ever "You go to a single town and fight an evil baron who got magic powers somehow." It's always some world travelling bullshit about chosen ones and world ending apocalypses.
>>
>>726781760
Torchlight 1 was that, and it was great. Just go down to the baddie
>>
>>726787172
I'd say the one improvement D3 and D4 made storywise over D2 is not turning the characters you played in the first game into fucking villains and killing everyone you "saved". The writing in Diablo 2 was so mean spirited.

I mean fuck, Blood Raven was barely a tutorial boss in D2. Rogues got done dirty.
