Why has the Medabot genre never been popular? I think pokemon but with legos was a great premise.
>>
>>726771816
It is popular, just not in the West. It had its anniversary recently and still releases enough stuff in Japan to pull in a profit.
If you mean in the West, no monster collecting thing is ever going to catch on that isn’t Pokemon. Pokemon has a complete hold over that entire market because nostalgia and people who refuse to move on or give something else a chance.
>>
Same reason Digimon is not popular, they sit on their ass not doing anything with it for decades
>>
people dont like when the monsters do all the fighting and you just watch

it was very popular but they bungled the anime and kids lost attention
same happened with megaman NT warrior
they just didnt dub the show fast enough
why the fuck did NT warrior come out when i was in the 6th grade and end when i left high school

I love robots man
too bad AI is seen in a bad light

There was also timeslot fuckery that split veiwership and ground momentum to a halt. For the first like half of the broadcast episodes aired on Fox Kids, but then mid way through the "second" season, new episodes would air on ABC Family during a couple times a week, and Fox Kids would often air episodes 2 or so episodes behind where ABC was. So kids wound up just fucking confused and wandered off. The release schedule was so shit, most people who watched the shot up to the big tournament arc, didn't even realize the show kept going for another season.

On top of that, Fox pulling it's support also meant Natsume had at least 2 attempted localizations of DS and GC games cancelled.

Some faggot in Euro stole the IP for his Crypto scam and threat lawsuit against the jap company that made the ip.

In the wake of Takara finally winning a years long legal battle with some Spaniard shitposter who managed to buy the european rights. The series might actually start making a comeback soon.

They didnt even bother to localize the rom collections they made for switch in japan

>>726771816
Because mechs in general have always been in this weird spot where they're popular but also niche.
Another reason is that we simply didn't get anything in the west outside of the very brief period it was being localized. We had some model kits, we had the small plastic figures that could swap parts, we had the platform fighter and RPG GBA games (But not the other platform fighter), and we had the Gamecube game. That's it. That's all we got in the west outside of the anime.

Even when Monster Farm actually somehow managed to revive interest in Monster Rancher in the west with 1+2 HD and even got a new game out in Ultra Kaiju you had Imagineer not even trying to speed up that licensing lawsuit to get their massive collection of games that wouldn't cost that much to translate (Or even pay for the fan translations of 1 and the PS1 game) over to the west. They now have one more chance before the Switch 1 properly dies out now that the lawsuit is over so we can only hope and pray they bring it over.

>>726773508
I don't even remember seeing the second season whatsoever, just the first, and I watched Fox Kids, Fox Box, ABC Family (The public TV version), and Kids WB religiously. So there's that as well.
>>

Medabots anime > Pokemon anime
Medabots concept > Pokemon concept

But you forget that Pokemon is a lot more popular with a wider audience, and that it's stayed visible for much longer. There are people who will buy a stuffed Pikachu and have never played the games or watched the anime. Medabots had a pretty good anime, but the games at the time were pretty bad and there wasn't much presence in the toy line. It never really caught on much, and it was gone before most people were really aware of the brand.

I think Gunpla and that Level-5 game were headed in the right direction, but the gameplay always ends up falling short. That’s probably why people aren’t interested in series like Medabots, even though a lot of people in the west enjoyed Pacific Rim.

The animation, the comedy, the cast, mother fucking robots. Its from before the 2010s so the stories are treated like an actual shounen anime and not some sol school setting like a lot of the modern ones are.

The localization is great. It's probably not at all accurate, but the team and VAs clearly had fun with it. The source material is pretty comical as well, making the whole thing pretty funny.

As for actual content, it's pretty typical Saturday Morning cartoon content. Go do something, badguys get involved, fight badguys. Lots of stock animation for fights and shooting badguy mechs until the blow up. It has an older anime/cartoon feel where it tried to be a goofy action cartoon, which is nice when everything else tries to be friendship and personal drama.

I don't think it's exceptional, but it was fun to watch. Check it out if you can, but don't sweat it too much if you can't. It kind of drops off with Season 2 and all the cool stuff is in the first season, so don't be concerned if that's all you can find.

My dream game for this or Zoids would be some Pokemon Mystery dungeon style nonsense where you do a quiz at the start for your partners Medal and initial frame then customize them over time and gain a crew of swappable allies while doing turn based missions.

the medabots GBA arena games were fucking awesome
>>
>>726779763
Yeah. We've seen one game released on the GBA back in 2002. Unless you are big on emulating and applying translation files - assuming they even exist - that's all that most people would've played. It's not too surprising that nobody is talking about build setups for a game they played over 20 years ago.

It would be nice if they'd release a new game worldwide. Would also be nice if they'd release a good game while they're at it, but I can't really say how good or bad the recent ones are overall.

The same can be said about Starfy, and people like playing Starfy.
>>
>>726779954
True.
>>
>>726780395
The difference here being that Starfy is just like playing Kirby when you play it in Japanese whereas the Medabots games are all text-heavy JRPGs with AX and G being the only platform fighters.
>>
>>726780550
No, I mean the people who played the one game that came overseas say good things about it. Unlike medabots with its dogshit battle system, it's only remembered for the sex appeal.

I have only seen it brought up in Robo Girl fetish threads. I have never been in a monster game thread where people talk about medabots. Fucking DQM gets more attention in those. Because the games suck ass. It has good designs, but if using them isn't fun, there's no point in it being a game.
This fucking minigame collection is legitimately a better version of Medabots.
>>
>>726781203
>Fucking DQM gets more attention in those.
I wonder if there being many more games of that series playable in English has anything to do with that
>>
>>726781318
Hide behind the games not being in English all you want. They still all suck.
>>
>>726781428
Which ones have you played?

And I agree, DQM is a lot better than the GBA Medabots game we got. I'd much rather play the Gameboy DQM games over the GBA Medabots. But I'd like to know which Medabots games you've played that you can just declare all of them shit.

The west got 2 sets of metabot games, there was an RPG and 2D kind of platform battler. Aside from being kind of broken as fuck in terms of balance it was pretty fun, though simple.

I've seen enough anons on this board talk about unfun they think Medarot 2 Core (The GBA RPG game that actually got localized) is, so honestly I don't think anyone would actually care if we got more Medabots game or the previous ones got translated. Hell, Medarot 1, 3 and R actually got fan translated but I never see anyone talk about them.
People like the idea of Medabots, not so much the franchise as a whole.

To be fair, you're in an already very small fan community and then you're asking them to go even more niche with the JP games. I've dabbled in R for a few hours and thought it was alright, but I didn't seriously give it a go yet since I have so many other games to work through. It was mainly just to see how it was. I saw the one for 3 a year or two back and 1 just came out recently if I remember right. Maybe I have that backwards.

/m/ had some people who played through 3 I think it was, I remember people posting screenshots from time to time.
Also, it's not like there aren't bad games, Girls Mission is a good example.
>>
Anon in a previous thread recommended me a fan translation of the first Medarot game, but it turned out to be an original Game Boy game, so it has like four shades of black for its whole color palette. Did anyone here actually play those OG gameboy games in almost monochrome? I know that's how Pokemon started, but I started playing it with second gen so I didn't play the OG gameboy games.

Yes, for thousands of hours and so many AAA batteries. Worm light and all glaring the screen so I could play Mario, Kirby, Metroid, Pokemon, Monster Rancher Card Battle GB, etc.
Medarot is SGB enhanced so you should get a color palette made for it you throw it into SGB instead of the GB/GBC.

It should have been an action game. Imagine having a game about equipping robots with artillery and flamethrowers and shit but all you do is muck about in menus.

>Medarot is SGB enhanced so you should get a color palette made for it you throw it into SGB instead of the GB/GBC.
What's SGB? How do you emulate it on PC or New 3DS?
I got translation here: https://github.com/Medabots/medarot1/tree/tr_EN
And it doesn't mention any SGB. Also, romhacking page for the translation has same almost monochrome screenshots too, so I thought that's how the game is supposed to look like.

Custom Robo
Little Battlers eXperience

I'm pretty sure there's a third game which does much the same thing. Basically Virtual-On but with customization or Armored Core but more anime. I thought they were doing that with more recent Medarot games already?

Little Battlers eXperience wasn't that great, many builds are shit based on how the mechanics work and some weapon types don't show up in stronger versions, making some combat styles invalid later.

Super Game Boy, the SNES add-on. RetroArch should be able to just do it naturally if you put the rom into an SGB folder.
>so I thought that's how the game is supposed to look like.
It is. The SGB could read extra data or something off the Gameboy carts that told it what visuals to give it if the devs provided it.
