When and why did racing developers decide we should never get engaging single player modes ever again?
>>
>>727117289
They didn't, i'm sorry GT has sucked dick since 4 but it's time to let it go and move on.
>>
Around 2008.
I don't know why.
>>
>>727117289
because market research shows that only 5% of gamers play the single player mode and devs were spending a lot of time developing it.
its over, loner

>Make racing games focused in single player experience
>They sell gorillions, are immensely culturally relevant
>Make racing games focused in multiplayer/online experience

Is market research a fraudulent field?
>>
>>727117583
>Is market research a fraudulent field?
Unironically yes. You can spin marketing anyway you want.

>That Gearbox cope marketing meeting where every game was listed by sales achieved and then Tiny Tina's Wonderland got mentioned and its accolades were "moved Borderlands to new genres that appealed to new people" or some shit

Marketing is pure smoke and mirrors yes-man bullshit to get investors pumping money.

It happened right around the time all the good devs left the industry during seventh gen and the retards that were left realised they had no fucking clue how to do good AI.

Seventh gen was literally the last time anything new was done, all the games you're playing today are built on engines from seventh gen or earlier.

The GT devs never understood this. GT for most kids was never about driving bajillion dollar super cars and race cars, it was about driving the cars you *could* get your hands on in ways you shouldn't drive them.

Pikes Peak in the Escudo was cool, but doing it in your mums Legacy was even fucking cooler.

Carmageddon is one of my favorite Racing games ever. Road Rash on SEGA, Rock n Roll Racing cross platform, NFS series, esp. mainstream during the Underground and Carbon era which coincided with the first Fast and Furious movies.

All racing games need is a decent progression system. They don't need some gay contrived story. GT4 already nailed it.

Laws like CARB affect the whole market because manufacturers aren't going to make seperate production lines for Euro, California spec, and jap spec cars. They're just going to make the most cucked car that satisfies all requirements.

The appeal of racing game singleplayer modes was always that you were starting from a shitbox Toyota Corolla and working your way towards unlocking that sweet Mercedes AMG
These days players want the nice cars available immediately, ain't nobody feel like spending the first four hours struggling to win by trying to budget upgrades for their first-gen Miata. In addition developers want to sell microtransactions to players so they can spend real money to immediately buy a McLaren as soon as the tutorial race is over.

Well, if you play like a normal person and not try to minmax every game you play like a retard, it's a good progression.
GT4 you can buy a subaru and mod it with 30k, do a single rally race and get the Escudo and steamroll 70% of the game with it, it means that it's a shit progression?
No, just that you either played 500+ yours or looked a tutorial on youtube to figure that out. and only one of these are is the real answer.

If you know what you're doing you can beat the shit out of the game and if you don't know it you can still have fun, that's how i measure a good progression.

Only the first gen (which that image isn't) is a real death trap. Later Vipers are all way better cars objectively and evolved into a proper sports car that'll do laps around most Euro machines and shit all over its closest domestic rival the Corvette, but were still 6-speed only, never an auto because Chrysler were autistic in a based way and said "no," so most burgers would never buy one.

There's lots of simple designs out there, just have a look around. The timber designs are all very straight forward, the most important thing is to get the proportions right and have some adjustability (easy with a regular car seat if you can get the frame rails with it). And keep in mind, unless you have a full motion rig, you literally don't need a racing seat, the entire point of them is to keep you in the seat whilst the car is being thrown around, for a sim setup at home, just get something comfy and cheap and put the extra money towards pedal/stick/wheel upgrades in the future.

"Unistrut" is a good alternative to timber as well, you can buy all the brackets etc off the shelf, you'll just have to cut the struts to length and bolt it together like a big meccano set, and because of unistrut design it has a lot of adjustment built in.

>>727125653
The cars and upgrades aren't made equal that's for sure. The upgrades that give the most bang for buck are usually racing flywheel, computer chip, stage 1 weight reduction and the spoiler in GT auto. Changing oil grants +5% horsepower, so always do that to any car.
You should always disable ASM on every car and reduce TCS to 1. TCS is not a bad assist and during some races in extremely fast cars(800hp+) it may be beneficial to turn it up to save on tire wear.
>Also, is there a “wrong” way to use the tuning system?
Yes there are many ways to do it, the most common rookie mistake is adding power without balancing rest of the car. You can't go from 100hp to 300hp shitbox and expect it to handle correctly without racing suspension or better tyres.
>>
Laziness. The same reason why there's so much rogueslop. It's much easier to let other players be the AI than to make a campagin and program opponents that feel appropriately difficult or to set the parameters and let the game generate endless shit. I remember when Dragon's Age 2 reused some (most) of the rooms and people mocked it ruthlessly now every other game is the same shit being recycled to infinity.

Cars have been tactless dogshit for a little over a decade now, nearly every car in the US is sold with an automatic and nearly every new car is a shitty crossover or SUV with all the "enthusiast" ones coming out being overpriced as all hell, fault of both a flawed economy and the dealership tyranny.
All the affordable, fun cars stopped being produced when most zoomers were 6-8.
>>727125787
6 forces you to buy a Fit as your starter car, 5 didnt give you one, you had to buy it or finish a license to get one unless you are talking about the free post-launch updates that give some bouchers with free cars to everyone. Every game since 2 had economical, high power, early game stompers like the R32 or the older Evos and Imprezas on in-game day 1.

>What are the best games for just cruising around while listening to a radio?
It really depends on how realistic you want it to be and what sort of driving you want to do, my personal favourites though...

American Truck Simulator with car/pickup/map mods, nothing else really comes close for comfy highway and winding mountain road driving with realistic traffic. Throw in mods like Pro Mods Canada, North to the Future Alaska and you've got road trips that last hours with lots of beautiful scenery. You can drive trucks, pickups, regular cars, even motorbikes with mods.

Forza Horizon 4, fantastic map, hundreds of cars, but traffic simulation is pretty rudimentary and the roads aren't very realistic, but are certainly fun, obviously lots of racing etc if you want it. It can be a lot of fun just driving around and meeting other players and seeing their cars and having impromptu races.

Assetto Corsa with free roam map mods like LA Canyons etc, comfy semi-open world cruising but in a proper sim, you can even set up traffic but it's no more advanced than Forza.

Spintires/Mudrunner/Snowrunner if you want to enjoy the outdoors in heavy machinery.

Spintires - Best physics (can be a slog on some maps) and best audio, basic mission structure where you just deliver logs, very limited vehicle customization, steam Workshop support for vehicles, bit of a pain to manually add custom maps but it can be done.
Mudrunner -Less hardcore physics (but far more playable), solid audio but it's missing a lot of tire sounds, basic mission structure with just delivering logs, a bit of customization but not much, lots of mods, steam workshop support for vehicles and maps which makes it easy.
Snowrunner -Least hardcore physics (better with physics mods), audio is eh, outstanding map and mission variety with literally hundreds of hours of content, great truck customization, great art direction, lots of vehicle and map mods, but you have to use mod.io to download them.

GT1 was a good prototype but the Arcade Mode was better than the Simulation Mode primarily because they hadn't yet figured out a decent payout economy for the races.
GT2 predicted what all racing games would inevitably turn into because you so much as blink and your garage is loaded up with cars that only exist to pad out the roster.
GT3 has the most miserable opening of anything I've ever played, without abusing the trading trick the first ten hours is just grinding.
GT4 should have never introduced B-Spec because it more or less foreshadowed what we have today with gacha autobattles and games that play themselves for you.
GT5 was overall a decent game with a great online scene marred by a launch so disappointing it made the tech demo prologue look better in comparison.
GT6 and GT Sport aren't even able to be considered full games, they're like what happens with musous where you get the same exact content repackaged and have to gaslight yourself into thinking this is okay.
GT7 had the chance to actually break away from this retarded model but instead it became a third worlder simulator as someone above said. Just reskin GT5 again and make every car unaffordable. Fuck it, right?

I'm honestly ashamed I own every Gran Turismo game because they all fucking piss me off.

>TCS to 1
I always put it to zero after dealing with too many cars that cut power as soon as it slides a little, but tend to leave it at 1 for those 800hp monsters (the Group C cars especially) because otherwise they tend to spin their wheels constantly even on racing slicks and the player doesn't have an automatic 'hold accelerator to just the edge of traction loss 30 times a second' like the AI cars do without TCS on. Absolutely awful for low end FWD shitboxes though, just completely cuts throttle at half the corners on a track. Also don't forget nitrous, which is cheap and extremely cheatsy and lets lower end cars blow away faster ones on straights without affecting your A-spec points, not that they're particularly accurate anyway.

Also don't forget limited slip tuning if applicable which can hugely change how a car handles in corners and is easy to screw up and get the 'shudder' effect (not a track autist so don't know what else to call it, when the car quickly jerks between neutral and understeering multiple times inna corner) when getting on the gas or just feathering it.

Around the same time every game decided we should never get engaging singleplayer modes again and everything should be a transient skinnerbox where the act of bundling a bunch of faggots together and entertaining each other replaces the need for a carefully curated and balanced singleplayer in terms of providing entertainment value.
but the problem is even more acute in racing because licenses don't even let those games stay up indefinitely, they have to constantly shift iterations because oops, toyota suddenly doesn't want to work with ea anymore, time to make a new game without toyota.

Majority of racing games have shit AI. In many sims the opponents won't draft you, something that online will happen all the time. Many AI have problems overtaking slower cars.

Yeah, there's a gap between real humans and best racing game AI. The "muh singleplayer guys" don't care about racing against retarded AI, it's just muh progression.

We stopped making cars ENTIRELY. Chrysler makes zero cars. Ford makes no cars. Only trucks, because trucks get a pass on stupid emission rules. It's unfavorable to bring over small EU and JP cars as well. We don't have the Fit/Jazz or Vitz anymore in the us as they effectively hurt the scores on CARB rules.

>>727120218
California's push on retarded emission rules was absolutely critical here, but you're right in that the US automakers wanted to favor trucks because they really coudn't compete with Japan or Europe on cars.

>>727120378

Correct. Fixing the environment is NOT the overall objective here. Some of the biggest SUVS and trucks get additional exemptions from this shit as they count as "agricultural or industrial vehicles"

that's the even better part. They loot every mass transit project. The people demanding other people not have cars all drive themselves, and pretend the problems in CA mass transit are more about racisim than, say being able to run a bus every hour on a route 80 percent of the time, or not having meth, stabbings or methed up stabbings, or not turning every mass transit stop into a homeless shelter.

And they no longer release video of crimes at transit stations "for the objective of preventing racisim"

why do we need to move meat, we have metaverse, it's just as good as being with these guys but so much more eco-friendly!
and then when everyone is cozied up in their own little bubbles and unable to confirm anything, start gradually replacing real connections with ai-generated avatars so people can never wrongthink or revolt ever again
solve the overpopulation problem by not having any population by 2150, it's no longer necessary
prevent big disasters like the big fire in hong kong we had recently by kicking all the people out of cities and into the boonies by turning real estate into currency for the elite (that still gets to drive, fly and have things, but you are no longer aware of it because you are instead shown ai-generated news that bezos has donated the entirety of amazon to charity and went to the forest to live in soltitude)

I feel like if Codemasters hadn't gotten EA'd, that's the type of thing they'd excel at. The first Grid has surprisingly good AI sometimes (I distinctly remember driving in third and watching first and second fight it out and thinking, wow, this is more immersive than most actual human players) that gets hamstrung by the obvious scripted crashes and spinouts; Autosport feels like they tried enhancing that and making the wrecks less scripted, but the cars instead feel like there's no energy and it's back to Gran Turismo style follow-the-leader. Never played the New Grid™s but I doubt the rival system really changed much.

>>
>>727117289
There's a bunch of reasons:
1. It's not only racing games lacking in good singleplayer campaigns
2. Companies make more money from multiplayer games because:
a) it becomes more of a social experience
b) it saves time and money by not having to cobble together AI/NPCs that is often trash to begin with
c) retards will spend more money on microtransactions to show their cosmetics and other bullshit off to friends
d) indie devs are often too incompetent or lack the skill/resources for good AI
e) players nowadays have absurdly short attention spans and will just skip through cutscenes and dialogue anyway
f) overall improved internet infrastructure has taken away what necessity existed for consoomers who relied on solo games for entertainment
g) car games don't sell well because of the next reason
3. Cars in general have been on a decline because:
a) goyvernments force auto makers to create SOVLLESS generic blob shaped shitboxes in the name of efficiency and safety with laws that get stricter every year
b) newer generations have mostly lost interest in cars and only see them as disposable appliances, they also mostly want something that's more reliable and cheap rather than cool and fast
c) thanks to inflation and said safety mandates, new cars are also more expensive - the average age of a new car buyer is now at like 40 or some shit, meanwhile, car ownership in general is more expensive and some people would rather just take the bus or ride a bike - this in turn also influences cars to be designed for oldfags who may have already grown out of cars
d) there is a lack of media exposure that has cars/car culture/racing as a focal point - import tuners exploded in popularity when The Fast and the Furious came out, it was probably the same among boomers when movies like American Graffiti, Two Lane Blacktop, Bullitt, Gone in 60 Seconds, etc. released (that and they had no video games to play, no internet to doomscroll through, and gas was cheaper)

>realisation that while yes, it is a bit more sim than most wanted, it's still very much an arcade, even compared to likes of forza horizon, and unlike it, it combines the best parts of both, being both accessible at low level and hectic and genuinely hard to control at high level
>realisation that repair marker system was put in last moment as a crutch for the worst of playtesters, rejecting it meaning you can't do the main cheese strat of wallriding (and the game in general becoming way harder if you focus on clean racing)
>people first finding out that wii version, paradoxically, doesn't run like dogshit, and then pc specs (and bugfixes) catching up to make it playable in full glory, and not as a slideshow on xbox
>growing appreciation of pure, unfiltered soul that both birthed it and that it passed on into Speedhunters (which was created specifically for Pro Street)
It's a case of "ask a jockey what he wants and he'll say a faster horse". They made something special, and got rejected because it wasn't a faster horse, it was the car.

Forza also doesn't understand that people might want to form attachment to cars, particularly imperfect cars. In GT, you might go to the used dealership and see, say, an old Evo in white, spend a few minutes thinking of what you can do with it and is it worth your money, and then have it surprise you as it both lets you enter and then win events you never expected it to. It's now your Evo, you made the choice, you drove it to victory and it's proven itself. Contrast to Forza that will just come along, say "hey, here's a new exclusive 1/10 McLaren, for free, come back tomorrow for a Koenigsegg!", and you'll never drive either of them for more than 10 km.

What are you crying about shitter? When GT Sport servers went offline, they patched the game to work in offline mode. The reason people paid for GT demos is that a GT demo has more game value than most full priced racing games.

GT7 legitimately feels like it was made by people who actually give a shit about cars. Every race at dawn or dusk is pure soul. Meanwhile, Forza just cranks bloom and lens flare to 11 like it's still 2013. Shadows, lighting, even the HUD in GT7 has more weight-Pajeetsport is all flash, zero substance.

When calibrating at the start and the logo is flashing? Check your encoder wheel it might be cracked or too far/close to the encoder.

The newer games have wide roads with shallow turns designed for supercars at max speed, and even if you miss a turn you can just continue driving offroad. In the first game you have tighter roads with actual barriers

I think the issue comes more from the fact a huge chunk of those cars are Japanese, and they are Japanese tuner variants of cars you can already buy, and in some instances you can barely modify them. In a game where you can buy about a hundred of them at the dealerships.
I get it, Japanese dev and all but one of the main things they advertised is a big increase in foreign and quirky cars and these for the most part are very few and sandwiched between all the R33 and 300ZX variants.
