That was true back then and it's much worse now that nukes exist. Japan should have been thankful they got that relatively gentle wake-up call, the boats arrived not to conquer but just to trade. >>727505340Was in Tokyo/Kyoto/Osaka at the end of October. Tokyo was fine, everything still running smoothly outside uber touristy spots like the Scramble which did feel like a shitshow. No trouble from locals or foreigners. Kyoto was so utterly mobbed with tourists to the point that it was actually a problem depending on where you went, for example Inari was fucked if you didn't go early to beat the crowd. Gorgeous place still, well worth it to push through the crowds. And Osaka was good too, was pretty busy because of Halloween, but police were in all the hotspots to keep things calm. Overall, pretty busy but still reasonable imo. Locals are getting fed up of tourists and foreigners per the news articles while I was there, but my boss who married a Japanese woman says that's actually primarily directed at Chinese tourists apparently. Never had any trouble from locals myself but I didn't have many good interactions with them either.
