You have to realize no matter how badly you want to be, you aren't alone on this planet. This place is crowded and eventually you will have to deal with the rest of the world. That was true back then and it's much worse now that nukes exist. Japan should have been thankful they got that relatively gentle wake-up call, the boats arrived not to conquer but just to trade. It could have been much worse.
