Nintendo is obviously making a push for a Metroid Cinematic Universe in the near future and that's why they needed all these new forced companions. I don't hate the cutscene attacks in Dread but I can understand the dislike. Old Metroid games were pretty good at the Master Chief effect where when you do something and achieve feats, they feel like your feats that you are defining the character with because you put in the effort. Cutscene attacks look cool but the game language is telling you "you aren't the one defeating the boss, Samus is doing it in cool ways that you weren't provided the game mechanics to do yourself." It's gameplay cuckoldry in a way since you did so much to get up to that point. Ninja Gaiden fixed this in its first game, you have all these ways to look cool during combat but you need to be good at the game to pull it off, so anything that would be" press X to awesome" in another game is your own hard work and thus feels more satisfying.
