>>
>>727591238
>laid of
Anyway, rip 3D Shovel Knight, I guess.
I really didn't care about Mina, sorry - the premise was cute (female rat protag) but the actual gameplay is just not fun this time (compared to simple idea of 2D platforming where the gameplay progression goes HARD on the actual aspect of PLATFORMING, a thing many modern 2D platformers fail to focus on and instead go for some meme combat gimmicks) and the pixel art + Castlevania aesthetics + good OST won't carry the game by themselves. Like, I dunno, a Zelda but with Blasphemous 2's "here are several weapon types to choose from at the start but you can choose only one right now" and clunky digging gimmick is not a good combination, and the demo proved that - it might've sounded fun in theory but not on practice.
You need to remember that Shovel Knight was so popular because it came out during the peak of Kickstarter (already full of high-budget failures), was made with incredibly low budget (for a Kickstarter videogame) but with incredibly high quality for such cost and the devs actually delivered on all of their stretchgoals years later and didn't cancel them or backpedaled on some of them and turned them into "fuck-off checkmarks" type of content. So basically everyone praised Yacht Club Games as "this is how you do videogame Kickstarter - no need for high budget to release a high-quality product!"
Mina was funded years after Kickstarter hype (only other recent videogame Kickstarter I can recall is Armed Fantasia + Penny Blood and GUESS WHAT HAPPENED), it's nowhere near as polished as Shovel Knight (based on demo) and IIRC the budget was actually much bigger this time, like several times as big as Shovel Knight's. These days a bunch of indie devs release great low-budget games on Steam, so Mina can't be a Hail Mary like Shovel Knight was ten years ago even if it ends up being a good game.

Outlines of random shit has the same saturation as other shit. Someone tried to make the objects stand out from background with vantablack pixels but the screen has way too much information for your eyes.
Shovel Knight also had high saturation of colours but It had clear distinction between background and platforms but It also had higher resolution and the colours flowed into each other less jarringly.

Might as well just burn your money every day. In the digital age, I dont know why people dont set up companies in more lucrative locations that dont cost a % of your life savings.

Shovel Knight was a novelty because it was a competent indie game for the time. Now that's common place and the company doesnt stand out so much. Inti Creates shits out Shovel Knight tier games yearly and mogs Yachtclub. Putting all your eggs into the basket of a fucking GAME BOY aping Fromsoft rollslop gameplay is quite the leap of confidence in what they thought would be a hot seller.

They should have gone all hands on deck into a 3d game. The 2d pixelshit millenial nostalgia decade is over.

200k copies... for a 2d platformer. Yikes.
This was 100% the devs living it up large, and not actually working on the game.
Lets say the game sells at 30$, iirc that was around what shovel knight was selling for. With steams cut that would be 20$ in their pocket per copy, so 200k+20$= 4 mil. They really need 4 mil for a 2d platformer? Jesus christ.

>>727593394
Mid level dev in EU makes around 50k. Which is a really good wage in most places. That gives you 80 months of dev time. Which is also for mid level, not even entry level dev. So a small team of 3 people, would have around 2 years + spare change to make a game and break even with 4 mil.
Which is extreme overkill, since that implies full wages for an experienced dev. You could easily have a team of 5-6 people including artists as long as you did not try to recruit only senior experienced staff.
But I will say, its impressive how quickly it adds up, and how much the delivery time for a project like this can make it or break it.

You can't just rest on your laurels. Ubisoft has made a ton of best selling games, but their sales start to stall except for big sales which are practically peanuts compared to when the game was $60 at launch, and that's where they're at now because AC Shadow was their big game in the pipeline meant to allow them to develop more games, but it didn't do so hot.

Yeah 200-300k is probably how much they need to pay everyone for a year or two. Whereas Shovel Knight 3D is probably coming 2030 at soonest and they'll run a kickstarter where they'll ask for several times less than what they need to make it.

I would guess it has to do with improper use of contrast. Artists use contrast to draw the eye to specific things, or to ensure something doesn't blend in to the background. But this screenshot is absolutely littered with high-contrast details, both in value and color, and leaves you with nothing in particular to focus on. Basically what this anon >>727592489 was getting at:
>the screen has way too much information for your eyes

It might be slightly less eye-cancer in black & white. Maybe they should have gone with a more limited color palette?

I beat shovel knight twice and its completely unmemorable as a game

its short, its easy and has generic and boring pixel art. If you want to play shovel knight, just emulate a mega man game

The only one who truly praised shovel knight are millenialsoys and tendies. Hollow Knight unironically completely destroyed shovel knight forever as people realized they can get a much bigger, longer and and more atmospheric game with better gameplay for the same price and nobody gave a fuck about shovel knight anymore after the popularity of hollow knight and silksong

This is the big reason, it doesn't matter if they had 19 employees with 6 figure salaries and an office suite in LA, that is sustainable if you are making and putting out games to create revenue. Ive never seen any kind of marketing for this shit and I only see people talking about how they want to fuck Mina, and furry gooners dont actually play the games their waifur is from especially when she looks like shit in game. Shovel Knight came out during an era where good indie games, especially ones that emulated the retro feel, were few and far between. Games like Cave Story were an exception, not the rule like it is nowadays. It is only unremarkable in hindsight.
With that said, yeah I think it was kinda mid at best, but it stood out at the time.

The highest number we have is 2.5 million sales. Let's be generous and say it's 3 million and ignore discounts.
3 million x $15 x 0.7 (to account for distribution fee). 31.5 million. Shovel knight released 11 and a half years ago, so that's $2.74 million operating revenue per year. Yacht club has always operated with at least 11 employees and often as much as 20. We'll say 15, so $182 thousand per year per employee. Sallaries, benefits, corporate taxes, office rent, advertisement, and software licensing could easily eat that up.

I disagree. Shovel knight was just a very mediocre mega man game that was too easy and did not push the genre forward in any way. Hollow Knight and silksong are 3x longer and much bigger than the average metroidvania game while also adding multiple innovations and modern features to the genre. Hollow Knight and silksong feels like an actual modern day studio with a very large budget making a AAA metroidvania game despite it being made by a few aussies while you can find a million shovel knight games with the same quality on steam with just a few reviews

Hollow Knight/Silksong modernized a genre that was gonna die if it didnt exist and has dozens and dozens of clones that nearly all failed to capture its quality and success while shovel knight is something that is generic and has a million games doing it better. It isnt even the first of its kind when many indies like super meat boy existed before and was a more original too

If anything Hollow Knight took a lot from Dark Souls which the devs claim they never even heard of. I thought it was a good combination of DS and metroidvania with a tighter gameploy loop than Silksong. A celebration is a good way to put it. No idea why people have to run to the innovation argument. Games just need to be good with something occasionally innovating something.

It's the ugly chibi sprites. Shovel Knight uses roughly the same amount of colors/palette, but the much more detailed sprites make it a lot more palatable.

Game Boy Color graphics that were designed for a tiny square screen don't work for full-resolution widescreen games. It's just more of the same cargo-cult "retro" shit from indie devs who don't actually understand the old games they copy.

All ate thru Shovel Knight's profits. If /v/ has heard of a game, it's because it's being shilled by a multimillion dollar marketing campaign.
>>
Well, I can't buy the game if they don't release it. When is it coming out again?
>>

Nobody waited for Treasure Trove because everyone already had Treasure Trove when they bought Shovel Knight in 2014.

Anon, people still play Skyrim in 2025

>Replace "heard of a game" with "can make a thread that doesn't die after 3 posts"
Those threads slide specifically because they don't have marketing behind them. Shovel Knight absolutely did.

Modded Skyrim. With giant tits. And blackjack.

delayed indefinitely

Sounds like gross incompetence. What the hell?
>>

Don't be silly, you're basically saying every thread that goes the distance (like this one) is paid for
I'm saying that there will be a few people who have heard of that obscure indie game but not enough to discuss it without the thread dying, whereas the heavily marketed ones have enough people hearing of it to discuss it
>>
>>727616418
Seconding what the other anon said. Not only they had Shovel Knight (and its spin-off) money but they also had Kickstarter money for this game. Why would you want to give people that can't handle money MORE money???
>>
>>727617809
>Don't be silly, you're basically saying every thread that goes the distance (like this one) is paid for
I'm saying if you heard of a game on any social media source it's being shilled. Don't move the goalposts.
>>
>>727617768
it was supposed to release in october I think, but now it just says "to be announced"
>>
>>727617851
Goalposts of what? Were we having an argument with defined sides?
I'm simply saying "/v/ has heard of the game" is too general. But since you're being combatative for no reason, I'll bow out. Seeya fagster
>>
>>727617853
Yeah. The Nintendo eShop said 2030. Which is why I got confused. Was going to preorder it, given I liked shovel knight. And it sounded like the devs might need it. But not able to buy means they are worse off then expected
>>
>>727591238
Growth too big and spend too much money on the process. They should have followed the Concerned Ape approach.

Practically any studio is one big failure away from doom. Studios that employ 20 people, studios that employ 2000, are one big oopsy daisy away from the axe. If GTA VI sold 3 million copies, for example, that would be insanely dire news for Rockstar and Take Two.

In the case of Yacht Club--they were kind of fucked from the beginning because they made the insanely unfortunate mistake of overscoping Shovel Knight 3-4x behind backer goals. But luckily it was a big huge hit anyway and they were able to repackage it a few times and do some smaller spinoffs. Yacht Club just stated something publicly that is true of the majority of studios. Anyway I think Mina the Hollower looks really good and it will probably sell really well. Hard to imagine it being as successful as Shovel Knight but Shovel Knight was a big giant successful indie game 11 years ago, which isn't exactly the dawn of small games, but certainly was a time when indies commanded a lot less attention in general. The market is a lot more crowded now. More money to make and a bigger audience, but that pie is split a lot of different ways now.

I won't because the game doesn't deserve to fail or be hated because the developer studio is run by mongoloids. But like I said: if they die, they die.
I won't shed a tear for them or any studio that goes under after falling for the "celebrity AAA lifestyle" psyop.
>>
>>727618220
This is true for all corporations, regardless of industry. They aren't in the business of building up enough cash reserves that they can keep paying their employees for 10 years or whatever. If a huge project fails to make money, it's time to downsize

Shovel Knight did, didn't it? And with so much less money too. It's so fucking obvious something happened at Yatch Club. Either they really are dumbasses that spend all their money on LA hookers and drugs, or they're just terrible at managing themselves.
Other than that one, Yooka-Layle did alright with their stretch goals. Don't really keep up with kickstarter games, but there's a bunch that were succesful.
>>
>>727591238
Make the game hmofa and their money problems will be over

why not both?
reading this thread tells me they bought office space in one of the most expensive areas in one of the most expensive cities in the world.

There is a correlation between how good a game is and how well it sells, but it's really not as strong as you'd think
Mina could be a 10/10 game for its genre and still sell way less than a disappointing game with a big IP, strong marketing or that just got lucky with social media
>>
>>727619536
I think it looks fun. But not bangers amount of money fun. Maybe half or a forth of shovel knights success

the biggest reason is because of the donation.
mina is likely to flop because nobody outside of this board even knows this game exists
fags are just priming themselves up to dance on this studio's grave

>Why would you want to give people that can't handle money MORE money???
Because I like the game and KNOW it will perform poorly, or at the very least won't EVER make them enough money for them to keep their unsubstainable lifestyle: A lot of people disliked the demo (to the point they had to DELAY the full release), and the game's premise and specially its visual presentation don't have nearly as much APPEAL as Shovel Knight, so there's ZERO chances it'll be a big hit. Its features make it a very niche title so its bound to obtain at best a moderate success and a cult following, but nothing more.

I'd PREFER if they didn't outright die but instead SURVIVE after getting a harsh dose of reality and pain. I won't push them to the abyss but I won't lament if they fall in it.

So I just checked the real estate listing. That building claims to have an ocean view.

For reference, it's 4x the cost of office space in an office in downtown tokyo, and slightly below the price of an office in Manhattan that's within walking distance of Central Park.

Shovel Knight is big enough that we would have tracked it anyways.

This is still a link's Awakening style top down adventure game right? GBC color palette and all?
Why would they need that much more money for a game that probably isn't much bigger in scale?

They were thinking, right in the westside's little japantown, so weeb shit and sushi every day. 10 miles to the Pier, 15 or so to the malibu party houses. 10 miles to the Getty Museum. 5 miles to Beverly Hills. 10 miles to West Hollywood. 15 miles to hollywood proper clubs. Freeway adjacent. Ocean view. They had millions and fucking made it.

They split the teams, had the main one work on a 3d game, that isn't close to ready. This one was run by an incompetent, but it's close enough to get out the door. They're out of money.

>>727591864
Its a grossly overllbudgeted game. The game itself looks good for what it set out to do.

And then go on to grow stronger and release their best game yet? Feels like this hasn't happened to any video game studio in the last 2 decades

>>727620417
The fact (((bloomberg))) is reporting on it just means they have globo investors pumping them from the start. It's a hedge on their own bet. When you invite these psychos to invest in you, they play both sides to squeeze every nickel.

Shame about the whole NICALIS absorbing Cave Story thing though.
