>Zoomers think "Meta", the Greek word for "after" or "beyond" - often used in gaming for the term "meta gaming" is actually an acronym for MOST EFFECTIVE TACTIC AVAILABLE.
>>727598385No they don't
Nobody has ever said that.
I don't know if they actually do, but contrasted to the literal meaning denoting "aboutness" or "one level above" (so, "gaming about gaming"), reading it as an acronym would be rendered even retarded because1) "playing the meta" tends to be about the choice of strategy damnit! (usually the other way around)2) "the meta" isn't (necessarily, often) "most effective" (strategy/tactics) but it comes down to... gaming about gaming! For example, in StarCraft a zergling rush (4-pool/5-pool/9-pool, whatever) isn't an "effective" or "not effective" strategy in a vacuum (well, other than in the sense that it's an optimized way to achieve an army of n zerglings at some level of economic tradeoff whereas building and then cancelling a spawning pool isn't an effective way to do anything). It comes down to context of what other players are playing! If Terran players tend to be building a barracks before supply depot in their base and blind-building a bunker, then it's disastrously bad. If they tend to triple blind expand then zergling rush is extremely potent autowin. And what Terran players are actually doing is determined by /playing (mind)games about the game/ (as per the usual meaning of the word): if they think you're not gonna zergling rush then they'll play greedy, if they absolutely think you will zergling rush then they will play defensive. So, "StarCraft meta" makes 100% perfect sense when you understand "meta" literally, but absolutely does not make sense if you understand it as "Most Effective Tactics Available" because 1) it's not a tactic; 2) there IS NO "MOST EFFECTIVE TACTIC" (actually strategy) but an equilibrium of strategies that emerges from people playing mindgames about the game, including factors such as the skill level of the players involved; 3) insofar as a strategy/tactic/build works, in nontrivial games there's rarely any assurance if it's part of any stable equilibrium, so calling it the "most effective" is dubiously bold statement anyway
I miss kevin. That fag could act.
