Yes. Dark Souls stands on the shoulders of giants and has warped the industry around it. And unlike other influential games like OoT and Doom it has yet to be surpassed in it's own genre despite hundreds of attempts at this point. The only other game I could think of like that is Minecraft

No, Skyrim deserves the title of ultimate game more. And Dark Souls is inferior to the original Demon's Souls on the PS3. It was released at the correct timing to change the industry completely, making it completely clear that gamers want challenge, hand-crafted content that respects them, and want to have the gameplay loop to be seamlessly tied to the story and the lore.
