Why was Paper Mario so much better than all it's sequels?
Miyamoto was right. The sequels ventured too far away from the Mario universe. Shame Tanabe is a bad dev and took that to mean "everything should be toad and not an RPG" though.

But the thing about those criticisms is that they run parallel to problems that were present in the original game. The original has a lot of backtracking too, particularly in chapters 4 and 6, and as for superguarding, both games are incredibly easy throughout, which encourages placing self-imposed restrictions to create a more entertaining experience. Sure, superguarding is OP, but so is danger Mario with Power Bounce in the original, and it's even easier to set that up than it is in TTYD. Both games even have Bow, TTYD just has less of her. For these reasons, I don't think TTYD is much worse than the original game.Boo-bies.

64 is the best because it feels like you're really playing an RPG in the world of Mario. It feels like you finally get to explore the Mario games you've been playing for years. You get to visit towns with toads and koopas and goombas and boos and yoshis. it had that feeling of finally stepping more into the mario universe and thats what made it so appealing, at least to me.
