The only kind of mod that's acceptable is one which fixes a shitty PC port or otherwise downgraded edition of a game. Dragon Quest XI S massively downgraded the game's visuals on PC due to being based on the Shitch port and its decade-old tablet hardware. Mods allow you to restore the game's visuals to their original state, creating a truly definitive version of the game.

I think this comes down to what you play games for. If you're approaching each game as its own piece, its own work of art with a message it/the creators wanted to pass on, then it makes sense to want that experience and message as close to the artist's vision as possible, as unmoderated as you can get it. If you're not so concerned about the vision of the dev but see games as a means to experience certain things, things YOU know what you want, then it makes more sense to mod. You're not so interested in hearing the artist's vision: you want a specific thing out of a game and if the game you have gets you most of the way there, then mods bridge the gap.So I suppose it comes down to seeing games as Art vs. games as a Product. Honestly it's pretty heartening knowing that despite what anons say, they do have an appreciation for games as an art form.
