Once you know how to play the game, it becomes pretty awful.

The devs hate the player and introduce shit like that so you can't get to the part where you just chill in a secured base. They made it so stuff like your gun will jam more if your near a zombie or your car won't start or will stall when near a zombie. Its why shit like being able to open a closet and its filled with 50 zombies all stacked ontop of each other is still in the game.

I am thinking about playing cataclysm again.
Should I try DDA or BN? BN seems like more up my alley as a combat and adventure roguelike, but DDA has so many more weapons, clothing, armor and loot in general.

Pretty use no, but if they are, I haven't figured out how yet.
They are mostly obstacles so you can't just loot all the houses, but you can buy goods from them too and earn money by doing your job.

If you start to get to that point you get a mod that enables a certain amount of sprinters.
I do think doing Raven creek and trying to make a base somewhere there is a challenge, if only because with high zombie numbers it becomes a hellscape depending on your spawn.

I always pick the heightened hearing perk which lets you see a short distance to the flanks and back.
But I mostly rely on the games actual sound cues. Headphones are very important to exactly know where you hear which zombie. And I do spins a lot when not in direct combat but knowing enemies are around to keep track of every zombies location. Otherwise, when kiting I really try to avoid unchanted areas and kite zombies back into territory I cleared previously if I have the option.

You can literally walk away from zombies. Running is more of a convenience or short bursts. Actual sprinting with alt is a trap. To fight multiple safely start with nimble 3 or at least 1 and train to 3. Training nimble is shit. You get a exp increase if you started with a level. It says "+75%" but it's actually +300% because no sane person is going to assume to base exp rate is 25%.
You min max traits or change the exp rate in setting because most skills are boring and tedious to level. Hell, all the crafting skills are basically useless to level without spending hours reading the 5 books per skill.
Unsure about anything, you check the wiki. Including what weapons are decent. The tool tips in the game are non existent, vague, or straight up incorrect.
Once you know how to fight a horde the game loses all sense of direction and just become boring as the gameplay loop has bee completely broken. Download all the mods and change the settings because balancing the game and adding content is your job, not the devs.

PZ is a plain open world sandbox with a lot of useless possiblities and imo you won't get much substance from it. The start can be interesting as it is challanging, but once you get into the rhythm of things, get a proper shelter to set up a base in, and stockpile enough resources it loses its magic and becomes very boring and by the book going through the motions. There are better zombie games out there, I think.

Mess with the game settings before creating a character. Make the game easier to learn it.

A lot of the settings kill fun, like using guns and vehicles will pull gigatons of zombies to you, so make zombies basically deaf, slow and fewer of them.
