Usually warrior/fighter types because it's hard to get fucked over playing as an unga bunga and you never have to worry about speccing into useless magic or running out of mana at a bad time.

I like magic a lot but 99% of RPGs don't have fun magic systems. I like magic when they make it shooter-like, Skyrim did it perfectly. Every other RPG it's just "wait for a bar to cast" "click ability bar and click on enemy", etc.

So I always end up going plain and simple Warrior because it makes the most sense for the party leader and protagonist. Magic is mary sue shit anyway.

Cleric or Wizard.

Usually depends on who has the flavor/magic system, though. Too many video games absolutely strip out every last ounce of flavor out of spellcasters and just makes you a particle-effect turret. Like, can you name even one game that has given priests or clerics any kind of religion system that wasn't being forced to by being bound to some pen-and-paper/tabletop RPG ruleset? Many games also completely stripped away any magic system from wizards beyond mana, and many games are trying to get away from even having mana!

I don't know if its because game developers just have a vendetta against spellcasters or if its the result of absolute retards wanting to be able to play spellcasters, but being utterly incapable of any gameplay that goes beyond "unga bunga I hit the man"

fighter/mage, gishs more broadly. Fighter just to get some dps because auto-attack is fun.
Though I have really played a good number of classes at this point. Like in BG 1&2 it had a bunch of good class combos and solo classes. DA:O only had 3 but mage and rouge were stellar.
Recently I played through DOS:II and you could dip in anything in that game but at the core I was a rouge with CC spells. Not to ignore pure fighters, but if the option is to trade raw dps with some versatility I'd always take that trade.

I think WoW lost me when they started to move towards making every class needlessly complicated. Like fuck off, I played elemental shaman because I literally just want to spam lightning bolt and nothing else and one shot people if I get lucky with crits. I open up Wowhead and look up the current rotation and it's just fucking nonsense to me, I don't want to waste my time learning any of this shit, I've never practiced a rotation of a target dummy in my life and I never will.

I like it when there are multiple viable ways to play a class/spec. Like warlock in vanilla, the meme is that you just spam shadowbolt, but you don't have to. You can put agony, then corruption, then immolate, then wand, or drain life, or shadow bolt or any number of things and it's all perfectly viable. I prefer this freeform kind of design where I can just use whatever abilities I'm in the mood to use. This is how MMOs should work. Having only 1 spell is gay, having a rigid rotation is gay, let me decide what to cast.
>>
Trying to nail down the answer to this has been haunting me for literal years, I feel like I play all of them often, I cant find a common thread in what I like and often struggle to pick class in RPGs

Baldurs Gate 1 as a Cleric of Talos
BG2 as a Fighter/Mage
Pathfinder Kingmaker as a Enchanter Wizard
Wrath of the Righteous as a Human Fighter based around AC
Dragon's Dogma as a Strider/Assassin
KOTOR 1 was a Scoundrel/Consular
In Daggerfall a Fighter/Mage
In Morrowind a Fighter/Mage
In Oblivion a Mage
Skyrim a Mage
FF14 White Mage
Everquest 1 classic my highest characters are a bard, a monk, and a Ranger

generally some kind of agility based melee fighter that uses light magic to augment themselves. something like a monk, or enhance shamans in WoW.
it's rare this is done well though. if that's not a good option, then I usually go some kind of summoner. necromancer, conjurer, or even a ranger with a pet will do.

>>728502045
agreed, I like what I call vibe-based rotations in MMOs. like I mentioned enhance shaman, from Wrath forward it's a high apm class with tons of abilities, but the rotation is usually very flexible. as long as you're pressing buttons constantly, the order is variable. when you get into the flow state, it's one of the best feelings in gaming. I find one-button classes like ele shaman boring as fuck, but also hate complex rotations like arcane mage or feral druid where if you miss one step you tank your dps.

Solo play?

2-handed warrior/fighter type. Robert Baratheon style

If playing multi-player, healer/support role. I like to help others, and because I'm literally the stereo-typical healslut
>>
>>728499169
Druids. I always gravitate to the classes with multiple modes that change up the way you play, they're all about having a lot of tools and choosing the right tool for the situation which adds a layer of depth that other more straight forward classes usually don't have.

>If playing multi-player, healer/support role. I like to help others, and because I'm literally the stereo-typical healslut
Everyone needs a bit of sexual healing now and then, doubly so when the rogue can't figure out spamming backstab and EV is more than 90% of tanks can handle and the whole party is starting to get exceptionally tense.
>>
>>728499169
Rogue, most often
I like attacking fast and stealing shit whenever it's possible
Or I've also done a mage with only support magic (not healing, just spells for majority outside combat purposes) and that was a very fun lesson in learning how to think creatively. Some of the most fun I've ever had with magic. I recommend that as well.

In video game RPGs? Almost always something with a Charisma based mechanic because it tends to work better story wise if your PC is the party face. So typically some form of Charismatic Martial or Attack Caster. Not bards because they're inherently kind of silly and don't feel as pivotal due to their support roles. CPRGs make me feel a little obligated to chose roles I feel are more appropriate for the "Main Character". It really makes me wish they were designed to lean into playing as "The Party" as opposed to your little Donut Steele that the party then forms around.

In team based games with other players in systems closer to actual table top? I vastly prefer support and utility classes like Rogue, Toolbox style Wizards, Bards, etc.
>>
>>728499169
I used to play rogues most often because they were brooding and edgy and focused on dps.
Now I play whatever mage class isn't a charisma build and doesn't have to work for their magic. And then give them a big sword.
This happens whether I make a waifu character or a self-insert.

Hard to say, since the specifics of what each class offers can vary wildly between games. Overall I prefer classes that have an emphasis on supportive elements besides just dealing and taking damage (buffs, debuffs, crowd control, healing, etc.) but still have some personal combat ability instead of being a dedicated healer/support.
In multiplayer or party-based RPGs this usually means playing a tanky knight/fighter type and protecting my bros, but in singleplayer ones it usually means playing a wizard (at least in games where magic isn't just "deal damage of X type" and utility spells exist)

I like healing too but I have always found the healslut stereotype a bit overblown. I would say most healers I meet are either some of the sweatiest competitive motherfuckers in the game, or chill stoners who just want to stay in the background. actual healsluts are few and far between. and you know what, good for you. we all love our healers even if we make fun of you. it's a really fun role too. sadly I don't get to play it as often as I'd like because I'm a pumper dps and groups always want me to go pure damage.

This bullshit is the result of them dumbing down the spellcaster role so badly, and healing spellcasters have had it the worst. Like I mentioned above, can you even name a game that gave clerics/priests a religion system that wasn't forced to by some pen-and-paper/tabletop ruleset? The healing spellcasters are always the ones who get shorted the worst.

It's partially also because modern devs don't respect the idea of resource management as gameplay. Trying to keep up an ever-dwindling amount of resources and make it last as long as possible has been done away with in general, in favor of jittery button mashing. This has reduced the healer role to retard wack-a-mole in a ton of games to the point that healing has become a sort of the official "girlfriend" role.

It's a shame, honestly. I think religion systems in RPGs are cool, and find resource management to be an compelling aspect of gameplay.
>>
>>728508219
Yeah the fact that most games either go with "limited total casts" or "limitless mana" is kinda shitty.
Having to manage a steady flow of mana so you don't burn out but still keep everyone alive is always the most fun, trying to budget your total pool and making the call on if it's worth throwing a HoT on the DPS that fucked up but still does good numbers or if you might need it later for the tank getting faceslammed by a crit is what makes healing roles.

I gravitate towards healing classes since, from a meta point-of-view, good healers tend to accrue a great deal of social currency in a guild or server setting. This is mostly due to healing classes being underplayed and less fun in most games. I enjoy wedging myself into a leadership position and wielding this power as a competent male healslut. I like having carte blanche to flame shitty DPS players and tanks and knowing they can't retort because I exist on a different social strata.

I will play whichever healing class is the most in-demand or best but flavorwise I prefer elemental/shamanistic healers over druidic, clerical, or arcane.

in multiplayer, support & crowd control dps classes, like shamans in wow. buffing people, debuffing mobs, cleansing debuffs, etc. because most people don't know how to juggle that kind of utility well, so when you pull it off you feel like a god and people value you a lot more than just a straight dps, but you're not in the healer cumrag category either.

in single player or co-op, usually a summoner of some kind if it's available. or just whatever the unique class of the game is, there's usually at least one. the rogue/mage/warrior triangle is boring, I like to play weird shit.

Solasta: Crown of the Magister does exactly this.

Monk > Ninja > Ranger > Samurai > Nuke caster > Summoner > Barbarian > Fighter > [FUN STOPS HERE] Healer > Paladin > Druid > Bard

Preferably minimal casting for the monk and ninja. God forbid a caster ninja, though I can forgive dungeon travelers for that because she's a loli in panties.

Paladin. All other answers are wrong.

I play melee fighter, either tanky or berserker style. Unless it's an mmorpg, in which case I play dps even though I don't want to. Fuck social tanking.
>>
>>728499169
Paladin.
Failing that some sort of fighter/mage hybrid but video games usually never hit the right balance on that kind of thing for me. I think Mystic Spearhand in DD2 was the most recent one that I liked.

It depends.

If it's turn-based RPG, I pick a guy with a sword. If it's an action RPG, I pick spellcaster or any ranger (crossbow, gun...) because I like jumping around in some shitty silk armor.

Wizard, if the magic system has some freedom or fun options in it. Two Worlds II was a shitty game, but I did like the way you built spells, combining cards that determined the various properties to get some silly spell that didn't do anything useful or does exactly what you want incredibly well.
>>
>>728499169
Monk or whatever class allows me to punch my enemies. If custom classes are possible I'll go for fists+heavy armour+alchemy+magic

Potions and magic will however only be used for stat buffs to increase strength or speed to ludicrous levels.

A few games make you attack using normal attacks before you can use magic, like Chrono Cross. I'm OK with traditional magic systems but wish more games experimented with things like that.

might be my jarpig brain talking, but aren't mimes super OP?
>>
>>728499169
Necromancer. If I cant do that then anything magical
>>
>>728533634
Depends entirely on who you have with them. If you have OP characters alongside them then they're OP, but if the rest of your team sucks then mimes suck. A lot of the most fun classes have some kind of weird gimmick like that where you can make them super powerful but you have to use an extremely unorthodox build or team composition.

It purely depends on the game. Assuming all playstyles are equally fun, probably a Spellsword or a Mage Knight or something

Monk

A hunter. The Gothic series is supreme for this, much better than that faggy Monster Hunter crap.

healer / white mage, specifically for solo play as a semi-immortal warrior who just whittles down the enemy over time.

>>
Depends of the game
MMOs? Tank or a melee class without magic
CRPGs? Spellcasters

Some kind of mage/fighter, i.e a melee character that bolsters melee ability with spells. Magus in Pathfinder, Eldritch Knights in BG3, or fighter/wizards in older BG games. Same in Skyrim, I like going spells/sword roughly 50/50, one handed with spells in the other and heavy armor. Gish builds are the builds that interest me the most in nearly every RPG.

Well, it's usually Swordsman, in shape of Knight or (melee) Ranger.
It's rare to find this classes, so Paladin/Warrior/Barbarian as archetype need to suffice.

Rogue. Sneaky sneaky stabby stabby. Looks the coolest. And I find it amusing that it makes no sense for them to have any impact at all at higher levels, but games have to allow for guy with dagger to be able to contend with gods anyway.

>>
Necromancer or any summoning class.
>>
>>728499169
Basic warrior or archer is always the best choice. Wizards are either overpowered or useless depending on the game and rogues, well most actual dedicated stealth games don't have good stealth gameplay so why the fuck would an RPG that is trying to juggle multiple playstyles pull it off? Summoner classes are at the whim of pathfinding AI, which is usually an afterthought.
Games that promise multiple builds never actually deliver on it. Games where you just play as a set character with a set role are superior.
