The environmental detail, the lighting, even the weird-ass UI design - it all has that surreal polish nobody else really captures. Realism is NOT art direction, it WILL age like utter dogshit, and make games run worse/inflate file size and team size. Making an actual style on the other hand takes skill and provides more room for optimization and the visuals age a lot better, and some games from the 2000s still look good to this day because of it.
