The first was bad and very janky. The second one was pretty good, but still a little janky and overall undercooked. If they manage to improve to the same degree with the third as they did between the first two, it'll be a damn good game.

I fear that they are gonna overextend their ambition and that this sequel is gonna lose some of its charm, but we'll see. With all its issues LotF is one of the very few soulslikes that wanted to be like Dark Souls rather than like Dark Souls 3, and I really appreciated that

>Dark Souls invented the dark fantasy aesthetic
That obvious bait aside, they're aesthetically very different. The first game was still pretty generic looking, aping the general "epic fantasy" aesthetic that was popular at the time, while the second one went a lot more for a sort of "heavy metal magazine fantasy" aesthetic, which this one seems to follow.

Yes.
>LotF (201X)
Abysmal dog shit that was blatantly made to cash in on the rising popularity of Dark Souls.
>LotF (2023)
Same publisher, different developer. The team was actually assembled specifically to create LotF2, and it's clearly a project that they're passionate about despite its lack of originality. They're honest about that lack, openly referring to it as their "Dark Souls 3: 2". Still, it's a very solidly-designed game that's more reminiscent of Demon's Souls' dungeon-crawling than it is Dark Souls 3.

I hope that LotF2, 2 (2026), not to be confused with LotF2, 1 (2023) is good. The trailer looked good, but I would have liked to see more of the levels, rather than the bosses.

Horrible feeling combat, horrible story and lore, horrible level design, just altogether a dismal package. I liked the art direction of 2023, and the one shot of Umbral we see in the trailer suggests that they cleaned it up so that it's not quite as visually noisy. It looks like there's more gore in it, rather than the white goop.

If nothing else, the Lord of the Fallen games deserve recognition for improving by leaps and bounds between games. The first one has the only camera I've ever encountered that actually made me motion sick if I played for more than an hour or so at a time. The second one was a solid 7/10 game held back by extremely low enemy variety.

the pc sales will be pitiful, I'd love to know them but obviously they'll never ever disclose that figure
>>728522918
well I didn't say that they succeeded lol, the SotFS comparison is pretty apt.
A thing I found funny in LotF were completely useless shortcuts back to the main hub that still take longer than the always available teleport.

>>
>>728523398
Nioh 2
>>
>>728521127
if they have a balance between dread and relief.
the last game was just too dismal, in music and atmosphere.

ds/das/das2/ds3/er all had the hub which felt like a ambient relief space. in lords of the fallen the dreadful music robbed it of any comfort.

second, they need to fix the pvp and have dedicated servers or it'll be a fucking joke.

third, weapons need different movesets, not copy pasted between things.
>>
>>728522208
No one gives a shit about either.
Cyberpunk has been a dead genre since the 00s.
2077 sold itself as just being a new GTA game (it wasn't), at a time where GTA 6 was still in dev hell. That is what let it blow up.
Otherwise almost no scifi games actually do well these days.

Previous game was decent. My problems with it is that the devs went for quantity over quality. Game had many areas but most of them had recycled enemies and very little worthwhile loot. Umbral plane was implemented in a poor way. The main path and all the loot is on the other side. No reason to play in the normal world. You will play with a blue filter for 95% of the game.
>>
>>728523468
Because they have a single author rather than 5 and when you pick up volume 1, you know that is all you need to start the series.
If you aren't reading collected trades for sagas in any given comic book franchise, it is far more annoying to start reading.
Even with those, there can be weirdness as authors or artists swap out half-way through your collection.

The format for American super hero comics was just retarded.

>>
>>728522918
There are only two ways to make a Soulslike in the vein of LOTF hard.
Either a lot of enemies, or a ton of minibosses.
DS2 went with a lot of weaker enemies and a few minibosses, DS3 and Elden Ring went with strong minibosses.
LOTF Redux chose one over the other.

Not that anon, but I will give you a specific example:
See, there was Spider-man Spencer run. It was meh, but Spencer autistically tried to retcon sins past (a story about Gwen cucking Pete with Osborn, everyone ignored it) and get MJ and Peter together. He set things up, his time with the book was over, so another author just needed to make a few last steps. Then Wells comes and creates a story that places MJ and his OC jew Paul into a time buble, gives them kids (that weren't real) and makes them into a family. He then proceeds to dogwalk Peter when he tries to figure out what the fuck happened and why MJ is with some random guy. Kelly doesn't do anything with it, Erwing just makes MJ dump Paul, but that's about it. Technically, MJ and Paul have been toghere for almost 6 years in the comic book world. It's one of the worst character assassinations and nobody does anything about it. It's probably worse than OMD.

>>
>>728526848
Timmy gave them monies. They've probably thought, that they couldn't make them game without them. And potential sales on steam probably weren't enough,

On unrelated note he wrote an interesting thing on twitter:
>DEI is part of ESG. Companies get investor brownie points for ticking ESG boxes, even if it backfires long term. That said, a lot of DEI isn’t even leadership-driven. Often it’s a reaction to pressure from activist employees.
That was his response to a question: "DEI is introduced from the top?"
>>
>>728526848
Well. If Timmy's offering enough money to fund the development and leave a little bit on top then it would make sense to take the deal. The question is — can he really pay that much for a mere exclusivity deal. And for the comparison LotF 2023 apparently cost $66M — there is no way Timmy would hand over a similar sum for the LotF 2, would he?
>>

true that, I don't remember how much I paid for it but it wasn't much. Given the situation I appreciate that they kept updating the game for a couple of years, they added quite a lot over time. tl;dr the publisher blew tens of millions of dollars on marketing because they thought they were going to capitalize on FromSoft's success

>>728527406
>I like how these devs operate
It's the publisher that's retarded, the developers have been nothing but good in my experience. I was pretty impressed with LotF2; not just the game itself, but the post-release support, although it never brought me back to the game for another full playthrough.
>>

Also, dismembering enemys was fun.

I have boss fight fatigue, and I also dislike games that force you to explore and alternate between two worlds to do an epicly boring puzzle.

recently they even added a feature that lets you coop with someone that doesn't even own the game, two friends of mine were playing it like that (although from what they told me the game becomes excessively easy in coop).
There's also a randomizer mode, if you care about that kind of stuff
>>728527607
they were important but often they weren't the most intersting part of a level nor the most difficult, but thanks to the speedtranny mentality of running past everything that isn't a roadblock devs started making the bosses more "epic" and harder because it's the one part that ADHD retards can't ignore

focusing improving on boss is fine. The boss fight and enemy variety aspect always the weakest parts of their previous games. Their world/level design is decent

>>
>>728527736

It's shit. It's a gay loot system with no combat depth forces you to use lock on and punishes for not using it, because the game was designed by people that don't understand Souls games
>>
>>728521846
Can't believe there's still devs doing this in 2025 or whenever this releases. I'm sure there will be an interview after the Steam release where they claim they never expected the Steam sales to be as huge as they are and they will take that on board for future games.
>>
>>728522509
these games likely won't get made unless epic completely pays for it, that's why.
>>
>>728528404
Just build around it, anon. You can farm gear and upgrades that make it so you dont even have to lock on unless you want to specifically want to farm a cool set of gear.
>>
>>728528708
In this case, I think a LotF2 was always in the works since CI Games really believes in the IP for some reason. It's just that Epic stepped in and injected even more money into the game.
>>
>>728529048
you're probably right, they have been pushing this hard for whatever reason. i'd like to say i hope it works out for them but i know it won't.
>>
>>728529048
Correct. They've started to work one sequel before the first game was released, CEO told that.
I like this game. The world is good, story is nice and simple, lore is fine, I even bothered reading item descriptions, which is something I didn't do for Blasphemous. I just wish there would be more RPG elements in those games. ER was a huge let down in this department.
>>
>>728528835
There's no building around it, the first game doesn't even have limb damage as a mechanic (I don't remember if the second does, I think it did), it just needs to select a specific limb to play the specific animation. It looks like trash (especially on sloped terrain or staircases or near walls, where the canned animations completely fuck themselves) and is completely unnecessary, because it assumes the player will engage with every enemy and weapon using lock on.

What's good about dismemberment? It chooses which canned animation plays when the enemy is at a near death state and you hold the button. It's never used in interesting ways or tactical in the slightest
>>
>>728521127
It will suck like the original

>>
>>728521127
If they learn from LOTF 1 and fix all the bad design and choices.
It can be solid souls like. But if they didn't learn anything than it will be medicore at best.
>>
It does look a LOT better... Almost like the brutal lovechild of ER and Remnant, which is a heck of a combo if they can pull if off. It just needs proper class designations, not just attribute stats, and seamless co-operative functionality.

Epic (((exclusivity))) will likely cap short term sales... But, if its sequestered only for a year, and if their dogged persistence with the current game is any measure, it will probably be a stayer.

It's the most dark souls souls-like with basic combat and enemies and some decent level design, but it all hinged on the reddit-tier humor, if you can't stand nonstop quips and le heckin epic meta references you'll hate playing it
>>
>>728531162

It's basically Abobo's Big Adventure: Souls Edition and shockingly competent and creative for what should've been just a shitpost game.
Combat is a bit janky and the humor can be hit and miss but it got some surprising verticality, interconnectiveness and creative mechanics.
Best one being the "item remembering" mechanic where you at first find a poorly pixelated weapon or armor with only a hint attached to it like, I dunno, "my former owner spent too much time chasing the ladies". So now you search the game world for a night club or something where you can make the item remember its true form and purpose, turning it into a proper model, adding stats, lore and even weapon arts. It motivating as fuck and gives you a reason to revisit old areas.

Type of vidya relates to the time we live in, people are depressed and suicidal right now, so that's the kind of games being made, just like all the brown poopy doodoo edge bromances of the 2000's because nickelback and limp biskit where popular and the crash happened and how fantasy games from the 90s are all super colorful and cheery because shit was good back then
>>
I liked lotf 2023 despite obviosuly being more janky and less inspired, but the artstyle is very generic "blood and metal and skulls" everywhere. And when i heard a new interview about the new game saying "we heard the feedback about gore from players saying to go as far as possible with it we are excited to go all in with it to make a mature game created for adults" i had to laugh, i don't mind overly gory games and if that's what they wanna do it's fine since i don't even mind the generic metal look, but that's a teenagers idea of being adult and cool (which i can still appreciate)

>>
>>728531916
but why can't they take any creative liberties? it has to follow everything to a t. dark fantasy with lots of blood and gore, stamina meters and limited healing with iframe dodge combat, and some death mechanic that involves having to go pick up your experience or losing a benefit. They could just borrow the combat style and exploration aspects, but they insist on making them all the exact same shit.

Because most people prefer comfort and familiarity, introducing something new every month can be intimidating. AA and AAA developers can’t afford to take big risks just to appeal to a small minority. It’s a recurring pattern.
That said I do believe there will eventually be a point where this genre becomes stagnant. When even noramalfags get bored, developers will start experimenting with new ideas. But it will take quite some time before we reach that stage

I'm not asking for an amazing story and lore, just mainly aesthetics. Traditional fantastical enemies like goblins, ogres, or lizard warriors or something, rather than zombie bullshit and grotesque monstrosities. An established heroic protagonist rather than some silent custom character that just came out of a coffin wearing rags yet is the "chosen ashy one" or some bullshit.
