I got to Ice Belt. I don't want to see anyone criticizing the level design of this game anymore. This is like two Chozo Ruins stacked on top of one another. Because it's not the first area you go to neither, it's free to be confusing and challenging and oppressing in ways the areas of the other games are not. This is literally the best location in all four Prime games easily.
>>
>>728574006
Neat opinion.
Post the Ice Belt map screen.
>>
>>728574006
Cool. Now post your thoughts on the next two areas, because Ice Belt is the last good part of the game

its a tunnel with a morphball section that takes you back. what do you mean its free to be confusing and challenging? you can't get lost in a hallway and theres no enemies until the way back.
Its the same thing that volt forge did, in the same game. you go through shut down facility, hit the power, and fight your way out. Every psychic key you need is basically within arms reach, its as simple as it gets.

I cant stand you disingenuous shills

Individual maps in Metroid Prime 1 can be somewhat linear because every area is interconnected at multiple places
Prime 4 has stand-alone Zelda dungeons with a time-wasting empty desert connecting them

dark souls already proved 14 years ago that people can handle tough games and getting lost, why is prime 4 so linear and with kirby tier baby difficulty
>>
>>728574380
Even with the NPC sidekicks and annoying self-sacrifice cutscenes in the mines, this easily is a tier below the other areas in the game. It's just a linear action set-piece slog, whereas the mines has the nice idea to limit your use of missiles and include enemies that produce noise if aggravated, which adds to the tension and atmosphere. Legitimately would be up there with Ice Belt without the Feddies, but alas, we don't live in that world.

MP1 is fairly linear in terms of necessary progression, but the overworld is interconnected in interesting ways such that the linear path forward frequently has the player intersecting with and backtracking through familiar areas, grabbing pickups and making small detours along the way.

Boost Ball, Spider Ball, Ice Beam, Gravity Suit, Power Bomb, Grapple Beam, and X-Ray Visor are all dead ends and force the player to backtrack to different levels entirely to progress (I could be forgetting a couple). The shitty hint system streamlines the backtracking for players who appreciate that kind of thing (I wish it was off by default), but it's still requires the player to engage with the interconnected overworld and remember areas worth returning to later.

I wouldn't say it's perfect, but there's an intentionality to the design I can appreciate, and it's still a lot of fun to replay. Thanks for reading my blog.
>>
>>728574006
lol, it's the first and last good part of the game. After that it falls of a cliff.
>>
>>728576145
>It's fine because-
So your solution to Prime 4 was replacing the desert with elevators? Ok
>>
>>728574006
Really? I felt like the level design there was super straightforward. It's a linear trek downward outside of that one tiny area where you open like 4 doors to scan/pull things and another where you have 2 doors to scan a couple more things but you never truly branch off into a really far off path that wraps around or anything. When you get to the bottom you go back up also in a linear area but via the morph balls sections that were previously closed off. It's one of the better areas I'll agree (though I wish it leaned into a more horror-vibe) and it was really cool seeing it melt but the level design was still rather lacking.

>>

>Power Bomb, Grapple Beam
Small correction, these two should be merged since they chain into each other in the Phazon Mines. And I forgot Plasma Beam after Grapple Beam.
>>
>>728580282
They're not terrible as a basic enemy type, but they should've gotten a lot more freaky and mutated as the game went on if they wanted to sell the horror undertones.

I on the other hand thought the backtracking was too much. Back tracking to find new areas and power ups are a staple of the series and is fun when done in moderation, but MP1 did it WAY too much to point I got fucking sick and tired of every area and don't want to play the game again. I will say MP1 handled upgrades and bosses better than 4, especially seeing armor changes in the upgrades.
TLDR;
>1
too much backtracking
>4
not enough backtracking and not visually showing/good flow of upgrades.
>>
>>728581617
>the overworld is interconnected in interesting ways
it isn't. magmoor connects the areas of the game, phendra drifts is isolated. sol valley is far more interesting, it just needed more done with it so it could feel dense.
>>
>>728581802
>It's a linear trek downward
You loop around and around as you go down, it's very interesting. Especially as another anon pointed out, the place begins to thaw out and change.
>>
>>728581920
cancelling a weapon swing to roll would be an objective improvement. even by realism standpoint; you can swing into a roll in real life.
>>
>>728582829
I was expecting the whole area to be clear of ice by the time you were done.
>>
>>728582561
>but MP1 did it WAY too much
this, my first criticism of Prime 4 cropped up immediately reminding me of what I hate about Prime 1. Why do I have to go back to Mackenzie to get the beam type. It straight up parallels times in Prime 1 where I got boost ball and had to go all the way to talon overworld to get space jump and then all the way back to phendrana drifts to continue. same poor design choice in both games.
>>
Ya know, now that I think about it. Since Prime Samus uses the grapple beam with her left hand. Why dont more boss fights have you swinging around and shooting, since her arm cannon is free?
>>
>>728583192
You can't shoot while swinging, but during the Sylux fight you can cling to walls and shoot. It's the optimal strategy for the boss fight.
>>
>>728583558
I swear you could swing and shoot in 2 and 3. But I dont think it's used for a boss fight.
>>
>>728581706
Remind me what was good about it. Definitely not the "where's waldo just scan everything" part or the one where you're walking over the chains. Definitely not the boss fight which I've already forgotten. Especially not that part at the end where all those morph ball tunnels that were previously offline conveniently open for you so you can go back without having to think about anything.
>>
>>728574006
Super > AM2R = Fusion > Prime 2 > Prime 4 = Prime 1 > Metroid 1 > Prime Hunters > Dread > Prime 3 > Samus Returns > Prime Pinball = Zero Mission > Federation Force > Metroid 2 = Other M
>>
>>728582561
>too much backtracking
I tend to agree. The progression feels a little too bogged down after getting Power Bomb and hitting the dead end in Phazon Mines (you need Grapple Beam, Plasma Beam, and X-Ray Visor to progress here).

Also, even if you collect the Chozo artifacts optimally along the way, I still despise getting the artifact that requires the Phazon Suit to collect deep in the mines, because you have to backtrack through Fission Metroids.

But this is why Echoes is the better game (I forgive it for the key hunt).

>>728582736
Talon Overworld has a lot of elevators and is utilized quite a bit during the more non-linear backtracking segments. I don't have strong feelings about Magmoor, but it is basically just a straight line the forms the backbone of the overworld (meh). Chozo Ruins and Phendrana are fairly self-contained, but they both have moments later in the progression where you return and explore new areas.
>>
>>728584519
>they both have moments later in the progression where you return and explore new areas
that's all I really want out of Prime 4 that I didn't get. I feel like Fury Green and Flare Pool just needed another half for a later return

I could understand someone liking Prime 4, even though I heavily disagree. But you have to have brain damage to think this is the best 3d Metroid.
>>
>>728588120
nah, I've played Prime 1 until the fetch quest. The combat is simon says and actually backtracking through the "world" (a fucking clusterfuck) is painful, especially Magmoor Caverns. I'd take the desert any day over the artifact fetch quest. Prime 3 was so bad I quit in the acid rain level, never played 2. I'd rate Prime 1 8/10 and Prime 4 9/10. It's been so long since I played Prime 3, and I hated the city in the sky aesthetic.. So it's not proper to rate it.

This. I cannot understand the criticism of green crystals at all. I smash them while hitting up shrines and heading to the next area for progress. I turn them in when I go to Myles for a beam upgrade, I unlock some upgrade on top of it. This is easily better than the artifact hunt in Prime 1.
>>
>>728588643
Think you're screwed.
It's weird that the game has like a boss gallery after you defeat them. I thought that would've been the scan backup.

>>728588795
Yeah man the first time I got an upgrade (the beam upgrade I think) I got a herion tier shot of seratonin. I'm glad the game actively rewarded collecting them. The psychic shield thing is "too little too late" by that point in the game but still cool as hell. But who knows I might need it for Sylux on hard mode.

I like ice belt. It makes it clear that the dev team would have preferred to make an action/adventure game rather than a metroidvania.

I think they would have made a pretty coll game if they weren't weighed down by expectations. Wouldn't have been a "real" metroid game, but i think they wanted to make a linear game and it shows.

There are green crystals in the shrines as well as the ones on the overworld. Anyone playing the game properly instead of only traveling from objective to objective in straight lines while ignoring everything around them would easily have enough to finish the game

I beat the game last Friday and I dunno how to feel in hindsight.
Pros:
>looks fantastic
>sounds great
>the Volt Forge and Ice Path are fantastic environments that speak a lot to the lore and mechanics of the world and race the story's trying to build
>most of the bosses are pretty good, are memorable in some way or another
>Psychic Abilities shine brightest in the form of the Spider Ball with the tether fields
>mouse controls are excellent
>Vi-O-La provides nice gameplay variety
Cons:
>backtracking for beam weapons kinda sucks
>the constant "Hey did you check your map" ruins the flow
>Armstrong
>Flare Pool sucks as a level cause it's a big escort mission
>the overworld driving gets old fast
>not a lot of bosses to write about if we don't count the Brute Griever and fire crab
>final boss phase 1 sucks
>ending feels really abrupt and predictable
>a lot of lore and plot points get dropped or not expanded upon, unless it's sequwl bait
>Metroids?
I dunno how I'll feel in a few weeks, but for now I'm sitting at 2 > 3 > 4 > 1, with the asterisk that I think they're all very great games, but that entire shitty Chozo Artifacts hunt actively hurts the goodwill from Thardus and Meta Ridley.

The graphics / presentation, traversing the overworld without the need for an out-of-game picture for the elevator placements during a shitty fetch quest that goes through goddamn magmoor caverns (Prime 1 overworld). The OST is incredible, and that moment where the music turns into distorted sounds in Ice Belt when you broke the glass on the pod was kino. The combat actually feels satisfying and missiles have a knockback mechanic on the crawling robots. It isn't as much of "simon says use the purple beam" with the coloured space pirates in Prime 1. I actually got quite attached to the marines, and it was a really melancholy ending in that sense. I'm hoping for a direct sequel where we might learn their ultimate fate. I didn't mind the last two dungeons at all and had a good time in them, though they weren't quite as good as Volt Forge and Ice Belt. In Prime 3, I absolutely hated the city in the sky for its absolute lack of colour. There wasn't a single dungeon in Prime 4 that I thought "I'd rather not be here right now". Samus risking her life to save Armstrong and Duke was great. I'm not a game reviewer but those are just some of the highlights and comparisons I can think of.

>traversing the overworld without the need for an out-of-game picture for the elevator placements
Meaning, navigation which is a central mechanic of Metroid confuses and enrages you.
>magmoor caverns (Prime 1 overworld)
Even if this were true, Magmoor has actual gameplay in it unlike the desert.
>It isn't as much of "simon says use the purple beam" with the coloured space pirates in Prime 1
That's because there are only three common enemy types in the entire game and the ice shot is the answer to all of them.
>I actually got quite attached to the marines
Meaning, you're a golem who should be playing Halo and God of Soi.
>I didn't mind the last two dungeons at all and had a good time in them
And this right here is the proof. Flare Pool and the mines are both cutscene corridors where you spend more time watching cutscenes and waiting on NPCs to open shit for you than doing anything else. You enjoyed that? Really?

I actually have no idea what you're talking about. You just keep walking straight as you go down with a couple intermissions for keys you get from scamming, there isn't much interesting going on. Compare it to the main big room of Chozo Ruins alone where there is actual platforming going on and a bridge alongside a couple collectibles (like the Boost Ball one for the Missile Expansion, or the tree you use Super Missles on, or the Energy Tank from another path or the Missile Expansion from the Grapple Beam). That's just one room and it has so much to it. The Ice Belt is cool aesthetically speaking and has so much potential but it needed more to it beyond scouting a few rooms for scans and to yank things just to keep going down more downward hallways. The coolest part was probably just bombing the areas to shoot yourself up but it's only for like 1 room and it's just a repeat of what the prior games did there too.

I'm not even talking about exploring
I'm talking about moving towards an objective, seeing a green crystal slightly out of your way and swerving to run it over instead of just ignoring it
I know none of you faggots criticizing it have actually played the game but collecting the green crystals is not some big thing you have to dedicate time and energy to which is why people being so hung up on this is so bizarre.

The series sort of shot themselves in the foot by making the very second game about extincting the metroids, so now it has to be an ass-pull to bring them back every time.

kinda weird how this game comes out right when i come up with the idea to make a actual motherbrain out of a gmo blue whale brain. whats even wierder is my name and street address is a cheat code in the original game. It unlocks everything.
>>

What the fuck, lmao.
Why is the timeline so fucking retarded? The Prime series makes it feel like Metroids are pretty rare and mostly just bred by the space pirates.
>>

Point A to point B travel without a million stops going through places I've already been? Yeah it was great, sign me the fuck up. I love Prime 4. Sorry your favourite game or whatever hasn't aged as well as you would have liked. You sure like to sperg out a lot.
>>
>>728599358
Metroids are normally only on SR388 but the pirates brought them from there to Zebes to breed them in the original game. The ones in the Prime series were evacuated from Zebes before Samus could kill them. So they are rare and basically only come from space pirate breeding programs.

I just love Ridley and he should be in every fucking Metroid game.

So again, you fundamentally hate Metroid and Metroid Prime. So why are you larping? Did you just decide it was going to be your identity now?
And on top of that, you're still wrong. You're still lying. You know how you get from Ice Belt to Fury Green? You go back through areas you've already been, you ride an elevator to get to another elevator, then you slowly walk out, then you get on your bike, then you ride across empty, silent space you've already covered a dozen times, then you slowly walk to a door that goes into a loading screen which is just to send you to, YEP, another elevator. So again, what the fuck are you babbling about? Are you sure you played Prime 4?

You get a gameover if they are downed and take a single hit from anything.
The final boss turns the whole floor into damaging zones, so if your allies are on low HP at that point (they likely will be), they get downed then take a hit immediately which kills them.
>>
>>728599189
finally got around to beating 4 a few hours ago and I was shocked how long the credits were because there were like 10 different contract teams (not even counting the individual localization teams) and half of those were chinese. There were only 2 white teams one of them had russian sounding names, so that leaves one group that probably spoke english. It doesn't surprise me that the game had such baffling design decisions when you're hiring hundreds of outsiders who don't even speak your language.

Funny how they say that they love the Prime games, but they refuse to ever go back to them because there's not enough talking and NPCs and cinematics. I think it's strange that the Prime series is held to some super high regard. I like the series well enough, but a few annoying NPCs and a few missteps in design are not enough to ruin it when every game in the series is a little flawed. Honestly always wished it could be more like the 2D games.
>>
>>728608108
That's just the Switchfag playbook in general - shit on the past and claim they were always bad anyway to prop up the newest games. It happened with Zelda, it happened with 3D Mario, it happened with Mario Kart, and now it's happening with Metroid.
>>
>>728588795
I had no idea what the Green Crystals in the desert did because there is like an 1-2 hours of gametime between passing by the alter to submit them and actually getting the bike and being able to go through the desert and find them for the first time, and it sounded like a side objective the first time anyway.

And when you ram them, the game makes no indication of what you are collecting, there is no numerical stat, for a bit I thought they made the boost guage go up a bit quicker (when actually the boost guage works by only increasing on its own when your speed is over 700 for some reason)

I had fully assembled the mech and still had the base power beam.
>>

Counterpoint: Should a sequel not strive to improve upon established conventions? People can argue all day long that Prime was linear, but I'd think by Prime 4 we should maybe have a thorough understanding of how to really work proper Metroid level design into a 3D environment. I can forgive something's first attempt at 3D. I can't forgive this type of thing by game number 4.
>>
>>728610297
Not to mention it feels like Prime 4 regressed in the game design. Like with the collectathon. As silly and unnecessary as the artifact hunt was, and as tedious as the sky key hunt was, at least those weren't just grinding for generic crystals.
>>
>>728581783
Retard. The mindless goy crystal mining in the desert is like a 5 min loading screen every time, especially counting the transition between area and desert that you have to traverse every time.
Even if you could skip the desert like a cutscene skip, the transition between exiting an area and getting to the bike and then getting off the bike and entering an area alone are like 5 elevator rides of doing nothing.
>>
>>728574006
I'll always be left wondering what the Bamco version of this game looked like after how disappointing this final product was.
>>
>>728606589
Are we doing this again? Magmoor has five entrances, every area in Prime 4 has one, so they are literally straight lines.
>>

Either an unplayable mess like everyone predicted earlier, or a relatively competent game that was reworked around the time Nintendo got mindbroken by BOTW's success.
>>
>>728604606
A Zelda dungeon (typically) requires some degree of problem solving, spatial reasoning and novel interaction. Prime 4's zones don't even provide that much.

>>
>>728613137

>>
>>728613245

>but now she needs to be rescued by some wolves
>here comes the friendly NPC to show up and save our damsel!
>>

>>

>>

>>
>>728614274

Yeah, the two scenarios are completely similar. Perhaps Mother Brain should have used those wolves DNA instead of Metroids when she tried to dominate the galaxy.
They're cleary stronger!
>>
>>728614274
It's already unbearable when it happens once, but it happens multiple times. Like Lt. Bazinga making le heroic sacrifice for no reason, even though Samus could more than likely survive a Sylux shot. They purposely keep making her weak to jerk off the stupid feds. Like she didn't even slightly weaken Sylux at any point in his boss fight.

It is DANGEROUSLY close to a JRPG where you win the boss fight, but lose in the cutscene.
>>
>>728613412
Why didn't Samus use the shield function of her new suit. It's literally the only thing it does

Tokabi, though? He's my fucking man, I genuinely like him.
>>
>>728574006

Ice Belt is the same as every other map in Prime 4. A straight fucking line.

There are no secrets or areas to come back to later, you run through it once like an FPS level and then you run through it again later to pick up stuff that requires a spider ball, that's it. No clever interconnected levels, nothing to look forward to unlocking later. They dangle a missile upgrade out of reach but in plain view until later and that's it.

>>
>>728619546

>>
>>728580282
Grievers suck because they constantly try to charge and melee you and Samus is still using the movement controls she had in Prime 1 which is primarily for ranged shooting and platforming.
It doesn't work together because by trying to make it feel and play like original Prime you handicap yourself with enemy choices. Even a melee or kick would have eased the problem somewhat.
>>
>>728607725
LOOOLL
>>
>>728619605
I dont even care about that. The feds make the game WORSE they make metroid less fun. So we should have a game like metroid 2 again, but instead of 55 metroids its x amount of FEDS you need to kill. And when you kill the last fed, samus goes "the last fed is dead, the galaxy is at peace." if this happens then it would not only be a more fun game than prime 4 but it will make future metroid games better because feds wont exist anymore.

This. I don't care about the GFED of Metroid. Metroid 1, 2, Super, Prime 1, and Dread did just fine without them. Prime 2 gets a pass because they exist to make Samus look in a very unobtrusive way, and even then, the early game fed ship site? Could have replaced all of them with Luminoth.

Prime 3 came out at the perfect time where writing had left the really edgy/cringy dialogue of the early 2000's behind but hadn't yet gone full 'hoo-ah' badass marine speak. You cannot understand what Marvel movies and 'geek culture' did to utterly ruin writing in nearly every medium.

Ice Belt is cool (and the only proper Prime area in Beyond), but what's the deal with this shitpost?
>Fury Green
Basic area. Looks nice. That's all I can really say.
>Desert
Absolutely disgusting. If you add the desert commute to the area loading times, backtracking is at its all time worst for Prime. Smashing crystals is boring. There are six shrines, and they're all nothingburgers aside from the beam upgrades they drop.
>Volt Forge
It's really just a lesser Ice Belt (turn on generator and backtrack). The theming of the area is weak (why the fuck do these aliens have this complex facility for no purpose other than bike production + testing?).
>Ice Belt
It's great. It feels like a proper, derelict facility, and the foreshadowing pays off once the generator is activated. Features the most likable Fed. My only real complaint was that the boss felt disconnected from the theme.
>Lava Pool
Not great. It's an escort mission drowning in the less interesting of the two common enemies (psybots). The boss fights are kind of cool. And it features the only escape sequence in the game. I don't think that redeems it, though.
>Mine
Thematically great. In terms of level design? Not so great. The Mine is the best use of the grievers in the game, and it makes you wish that other areas did more with them (aside from Ice Belt). But if you were hoping to get away from the Feds...that doesn't happen here. The narrative is also a bit too ridiculous. We've never seen the Feds do anything more than job to fodder, so why are we supposed to believe that these guys can hold off an army single-handedly and walk away without a scratch? The only member to get hurt is the last one you'd expect to take damage kek.

Worst Prime game, top 5 worst Metroid games

>emulator screenshot
The game does not look like that on official hardware. The hunters suck ass, and I felt absolutely no remorse in killing them. Rundas stood still and let me kill him because even his dumb ass could tell how lame he was. And ignoring all of that, hypermode fucks the game balance irreparably. Enemies are too tanky, overall, and nearly every upgrade / pickup is pointless aside from energy tanks. Corruption's story reeks of late 2000's cringe (big guys from space!). And as bad as the Fed stuff is in Beyond, I'm not sure it ever surpasses the silliness of Corruption's cahwahdoody escort mission.

Corruption and Beyond deserve to be lumped together.

The feds in that zone are either portrayed like fodder for Samus or the Ubermencht for somehow surving all the LAST STANDS intact, no inbetween, also they are really adamant that i care for a robot that i first met 15 minutes ago and we were together for 5.

I can't believe a game this polished, this fun, and high quality in every single aspect has a 79 on MC, it's like a coordinated effort to take it down. The annoying character only annoys first the first 30 minutes too, that IGN interview by the incel reviewer lapidated the game as most reviewers never play more than a couple of hours.
>>
>>728629535
>compared to literal perfection
Even then the game deserves a 90+.
>>
>>728630369
Maybe I wasn't clear, but I wasn't complementing the Fed stuff in the Mine. The concept of the area's enemies were great and could have led to more tension if it wasn't for the repeated "GO ON WITHOUT ME!!!" followed by the reunion at the elevator. It killed my suspension of disbelief multiple times.

You can get a 70 with polish, alone. Anything above that is usually an indicator of how fun a game is. Beyond is missing something outside of polish.
>>
>>728630809
Just because it looks nice, plays nice, and sounds nice doesn’t make it good. There is no meat on the bone. Take out the escort missions, backtracking to Myles for beams, worthless desert padding and endgame fetch quests, what do you have? A five hour corridor shooter. It’s shit, anon.
>>
>>728632303
I think the level design is very good, it keeps impressing me by how clever it is. The thing about it is that it made some bad decisions, but when the game is good it's not mediocre, it's amazing. But now that I think about it, Steller Blade, Wukong, NInja Gaiden 4, all have scores around 80. It just that having the same score as a slop like Hyrule Warriors doesn't sit right.

You spend the entire first half going through a glorified walking sim where you enter rooms and read logs with mininal puzzles or combat, and the last half fighting the same enemies you've been fighting elsewhere, not even like a cool horror half-greiver-half-lamorn fucked up hybrid that would be contextually relevant, just the same old reused enemies.
The area is the best laid out of all of them, but still plays out extremely linearly, and repeats the same basic structure of the other areas, so it's wasted.

It sucks.

actually in prime 4 samus is nowhere near threatened by sylux. his main issue is that he might kill feds or nuke the teleporter before they can scape. he got defeated cleanly multiple times.

Through the teleporter, obviously, but were they in a ship? Did they detach from pirates? How did they get to the guardians? Why are there only six of them?

I guess my takeaway is that Beyond misses a lot of opportunities for environmental story telling.

>it wasn't until after I finished the game and checked the gallery out of curiosity that I noticed Samus' visions were about Sylux's pov
It's still weird to me that they threw one of the 100% completion scenes into the gallery with no indication to the player. I only found out about it from seeing discussions online about Sylux's backstory and thinking "what the fuck?". Didn't even know that video was sitting in my gallery.

The biggest indicator of when shills are hopelessly defending an absolute piece of shit sequel/remake is when they resort to "well ACTUALLY the original beloved classic was always shit!" In the same breath theyll say the new game is 10/10 amazing and you need to buy it right now, and then when gigantic flaws in it are pointed out theyll desperately denigrate the original and resort to saying actually it was always garbage just like the new one, but you should totally still buy the new one for some reason.
EVERY single time its "muh magmoor caverns" when its always been universally agreed upon to be the worst part of Prime 1 and shills ignore the rest of Prime 1 in entirety and that magmoor is just a hallway connecting numerous areas whereas in Prime 4 every single area in the game is just as linear as Magmoor if not moreso and connected by a literal massive empty blob of nothingness.

One of my favorite posts I saw about the game was someone saying that since Samus only saw bits and pieces of Sylux’s backstory she might’ve assumed that he had sympathetic reasons since all the parts of him wanting the weapon and that he got his own team killed were left out. That makes things way funnier to me.
