when does a console become "retro"?

>>728598940NOOOOOOOOOOO IF THING OLD THAT MEAN I OLD THAT NO MAKE SENSE IT "NOT" RETRO ME NO OLD!!!!
>>728598940if a device has the ability to connect to current peripherals with ease its not retro, 360 can connect to a display via HDMI and output a progressive scan image with connection to the internet via LAN or wifi. It is not retro.
>>728598940never.gen 7 will never be retro
>>728599262360 can't connect to the internet anymore. So Yahtzee Go Fish Connected 4.
>>728598940The Xbox 360 is not retro and never can be. Retro refers to a period in time in which game technology was rapidly evolving with every generation, and devs were working within the constraints of limited hardware. PS3/360 were the first consoles in the era of stagnation (we're in it now btw) where nothing changed except for texture resolution and lighting effects.
uncs will have grandkids in 20 years and still be like>nah 360 just came out it's not old yet
>>728598940I don't think they do anymore. Technology has stagnated, no new advancements are made.
>>728599451>dey not retro cuz tldr diddy ahh long textu lost and got raped unc
>>728599424yes it can, you can still play 360 games online right now. You just can't download games from the 360's digital storefront anymore.

intuitively we all understand that N64/PS1 was the last retro geni dont think PS2/Gamecube gen will ever genuinely be considered retro
>>72859894020 years after launch
>>728599262None of this has anything to do with the word "retro." Just because you're an old, balding retard who refuses to grow up doesn't mean you can redefine actual words.
If retro is just a synonym for old, then everything that is not new is retro. So I will call the Nintendo Switch and the PS4 retro, just to show how stupid this whole conversation is.
>>728599262You are elderly. Rapidly descending into the grave.
>>728599451>Retro refers to a period in time in which game technology was rapidly evolving with every generationfuckin stupid retard desperate to make the word as specific as possible by making shit up>relating to, reviving, or being the styles and especially the fashions of the pastthere you go, definition of retro. even /vr/ isn't even retro, it's just nostalgia basically

>>728598940If it released before 2005It should be anything before the 2000s but whatever
>>728600048in 2037 yes absolutely the switch will be considered old as fuck and ancient.
>>728600080not this one>retro only refers to before i started realizing i'm getting older and only relates to things from when i was young specifically and NO other time!this guy >>728600074 is right completely
I love retro games like Skyrim and GTAV
>>728600080>if enough retards outnumber the non-retards, then the retards winFuck you.>>728600060This is correct. Retro, as the word actually means, is a style choice, not a synonym for old. The NES is not retro, it never has been retro, and it never will be retro. The NES Mini has been retro since it first came out. If you're not a shit eating retard, you will understand the difference.
>>728600060your definition is gay and lame
I would say for it to be truly retro it would have to be entirely outdated tech
>>728600060retro =/= retro gameshttps://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Retro_gaming/vr/ basically uses the 20 year rule because game center CX does (there's been a general there for over a decade now)
>>728600005if you're using dictionary definitions than the original NES isn't even retro because it's an original, only shit like those mini-NES emulator boxes is retro
So that means my dick is retro right?
Retro means it had first party corded controllers so the 360 is retro but the ps3 isnt

>>728600172No. If retro = old, then the Nintendo Switch is currently retro. If "language evolves" and "words change meaning over time", as you braindead faggots parrot, then my proclamation here is just as valid as all of you shitheads' interpretation of the word.
>>728599167You mean before 2013.
>>728600357nah just decrepit
>>728600351This is correct. Retro is not a synonym for a time period, it is a style choice. It is only because idiots are idiots that this conversation never dies.

>>728598940Can live-service games or MMOs be retro?
>>728600554What? No. The HD era began in like 2009. Games throughout the 2000s were mostly in 4:3 aspect ratio and were played on CRTs.
>>728600505No. The NES was released in the US 1985 with an aesthetic of a product released in 1985. This is not retro. The NES Mini was released in 2016 with an aesthetic of a product released in 1985. This is retro.

retro can mean anything up until the time steve ballmer stopped being CEO of Microsoft. so PS4/Xbone will be the final generation that can be considered retro then none of them past that ever can be.
>>728600743>>728600807Correct.
>>728600720it's a retrospective term. Do you think people were distinguishing baroque/classical/romantic eras at the time?
>HD is totally not retro, goys
>>728600837why, cause it would make you feel old as shit?
>>728598940For consoles when it is 3 generations or more before the current one. The year count is accordingly dynamic. For PC make it 4-5 Window versions (not builds) instead. IE: PC games from 85 were retro in 95 (even if not for windows). I see it more as neing noticable different from the current state of the industry (and current social trends), generational and OS just tend to reflect such shifts.
>>728599451Came here to post this. And as many other posts in this thread suggest, retro is more of a specific era rather than how old something is.
>>728598940About three generations, one is not enough, two is not quite it but after three that is a good enough to start that consideration. Where teens who are playing the current gen likely never experience that era thereby creating a generational gap.
I'm okay with calling the 360 retro, a lot has changed since 2005. But technology has regressed so much this past decade that it's going to be funny watching gen A/B arguing about Overwatch or Fortnite being retro in another 10 years
>>728600906>retro is more of a specific erawhat, ONE specific era, only ONE and NEVER AGAIN EVER?i mean, never mind the fact that's NOT what retro means
>>728600983Yes
>>728599451The 360 wasnt a jump in technology? are you retarded? You can see the difference between the original xbox/PS2 and the 360/PS3
>>728600983that's correct in the same the godfather won't be part of the golden age of hollywood no matter how much time passes
>>728600969However, it will handily demonstrate why the people who want to use retro as a synonym for old are all wildly incorrect and retarded.
>>728601070Correct. It was simply an incremental update.
>>728600875Yeah but my point is that around 2000, we were already using the word "retro" to refer to a set of games, and that set eventually grew to include games closer to and even sometimes past 2000. If retro was able to grow to include the year that it was originally defined within once, any working definition MUST be prepared to go through this again.
>>728599424They removed the store last year but you can still connect online for stuff like achievements, friend lists and chat. Most online games no longer have working servers but they are still a few multiplayer games like Mass Effect 3 that are still active
>>728598940Nothing after gen 5 is retro.
God the prequels were so good.
>>728601218The prequels were ENTERTAINING
>>728601086And retro is less similar to the golden age of Hollywood, more similar to calling a movie "classic" or "historic".
>>728599036Shut up zoomfaggot
>>728598940when it doesn't have a gpu
>>728599451Unc status: buck broken
>>728601262i don't think so. is some forgotten n64 shovelware game not retro because it doesn't have status such as classic or historic?
>>728600983Yeah, same as gothic and baroque and renaissance are specific eras and we don't say Justin Bieber is classical music because he's old now.
>>728598940I think it's fair to say that it's when there's a paradigm shift in how things are done and presented. The actual eras would beProto - 1970s: Games are incredibly rudimentary pastimes for most of the decade, although some of what's to come appears later in the latter half of the decade.Retro - 1980-90s: Games take their first solid identity with a ton of new releases into the arcade that have a lot of the things we consider standard parts of game design to this day. The home market spends most of its time taking cues from Arcade Games or striving to be ports/comparable experiences, but some "designed with home play in mind first and foremost" games slowly start to appearMetro - 2000s-2010s: Arcades rapidly die off, as home consoles are not only strong enough to provide the same experience (hell, some machines were just modified 6th Gen Consoles), but the advancements in power meant that long gameplay experiences designed for the home could be robust and mostly unfettered in design. While 3D 5th Gen was often very similar in design to 2D due to the limited power, 6th Gen was designing way bigger experiences that absolutely dwarf all but the most cleverly designed 5th Gen games. Online Play also becomes a significant factor.Modern - 2020s: Game design shifts to focus entirely driving engagement, both while playing and on the internet, while also squeezing out as much money as possible. Single player games are generally designed to drive the algorithm to push the brand as a whole, while multiplayer games are predominantly live service. However, at the same time, indie games and smaller studios start paying more service to those that decry this design, especially after proving themselves a viable alternative towards the tail end of the 2010s, and whether this'll pay off in reviving full fledged experiences or simply remain smaller ones that target smaller subgroups is anyone's guess. So the 360 would be retro in 2033
>>728598940It's old, but not retro. All modern consoles are incremental progressions of the paradigms set by the 7th gen. There should probably be some new fucking term for 7th gen onward because much like tranny OP will never be a real woman, Xbox 360 will never be retro.
>>728600898No, I've been 23 since 2014
Once there is a change in game design, I'll start seeing things as retro,
>>728600969post moar like this
>>728598940>when does a console become "retro"?people that use retro to define old things are retards, Retro is a art aesthetic that consist in imitate or replicate the aesthetic of the past to create a nostalgic aesthetic...
such a rigid outlook doesn't work in the context of video games. By this logic the PS4 will be "retro" in 12 years and you and I both know the PS6 (Which will be at its tail end by that point) will have games, gameplay, gameplay structures, and graphical fidelity barely distinguishable from it. A PS3's only true difference from a PS5 for the most part is graphically in the overwhelming majority of games. It's always so tiresome when zoomers try and insist the PS2 is retro. It's the point at which all conventions were standardised, and the start of the decent into garbage.Eventually zoomers are going to act like the 360 and Wii are "retro", despite them being visually indistinguishable from modern titles. I see them all the time, when the Oblivion demaster came out they were all saying shit like "whoa I can't believe this is a 20 year old game they must've done a lot of stuff to it".
>>728601403Ironically you stated one of the major cancers as to WHY seventh gen finally got pushed out of the contemporary into retro status.
>>728599875>using reddit
>>728601371I guess not. But "retro" is absolutely a status held by pieces of media, platforms, and so on, one that they gain by contrast with current media rather than by being aged a specific number of years.

In eight years, the PS4 will be twenty years old. I have doubts that games will be much different by then, since they haven't already changed much in the last twelve. It'll be strange to call it retro.

>>728603591>retro aestheticYou just proved that anon right.
>>728603692That is the correct use of the word "retro". It is a style. It is not a synonym for old. This is what idiots fail to understand. cc: >>728603514The point is further demonstrated here. If the 360 is retro, then all 360 games are retro. So yeah, GTAV, retro game, right? If retro is just a synonym for old, then yes, it is. Which is fucking retarded, but that's the way retards want it to be.
Credit where it's due for not correcting my post incriminating yourself as having actually read the article, but you lost anyway because choosing to not comment because you did read it also means you admitted I was right
>>728603827>If the 360 is retro, then all 360 games are retro.Games emblematic of 7th generation gaming are retro, yes.GTAV itself is fairly anachronistic despite receiving updates and re-releases fairly frequently.Unless you're about start suggesting that Super Mario Bros is no longer retro because they re-released it a while ago but you play it mirrored as luigi.
>>728604006Using the word retro as it actually means, Super Mario Brothers is not retro, never has been retro, and never will be retro. It was a product made with a contemporary design, as opposed to being deliberately made with an older design.Using the word retro as retards want to use it, Super Mario Odyssey is retro, because retro and old are synonyms.
>>728603902i didn't respond because you refuse to distinguish retro games and retro stye games
The bar for what is considered retro is always moving forward.Deal with it. Accept it.
>>728603827>That is the correct use of the word "retro". It is a style. It is not a synonym for old. Then why does the page (and people in general) use "retro style" or "retro aesthetic" when that would be redundant since retro is, according to you, already a style? And I agree with you that it's not a synonym for old, it's to delineate a very specific moment in time. My issue is more with calling modern games made in a retro style (i.e. made to evoke retro games) retro games.
>>728604279Why yes I did refuse to play this semantic game with you where you won the argument that "Retro Style" and "Retro" are different things because of slang that even in context admits that new games are, in fact, retro.
Retro as a word becomes completely meaningless if all it takes is for something to be old.
>>728598940It doesn't. Retro does not mean old.
>>728604338Slang usage of retro in the gaming scene as a synonym for antique does not mean that retro now only refers to antiques.
is there a name for this definitional prescriptive autism? i'd call the guy retarded but he'd probably start talking about his 5 minute mile
i'm retroactively continuing
I don't think the PS3 or 360 could ever be considered "retro gaming" because the only thing really holding them back from running 720p 30fps ports of recent games is their 512MB of RAM.
>>728605272severe mental retardation or bait? call it.
>>728605462Honestly I'm starting to get the impression this is a "TF2 Oldfag" situation where it's retards that never actually played a seventh gen game and are completely oblivious to how different gaming is now.
>>728598940>when does a console become "retro"?When its graphics and style feel distinct from what's being made now at a glance. Considering the lack of advancement we've seen over the past few console generations, I'd say the newest gen that would qualify as retro is the PS2, Xbox, and Gamecube generation. If you look back at the games made for those consoles its very obvious they're very old at a glance. On the other hand a lot of PS3, Xbox360, and even some Wii games still look like they could be somewhat recent. Tech was advancing more obviously in the older console generations so consoles became retro more quickly. By the time the N64 came out the NES was retro while the SNES was just old because N64 games looked radically different than NES games,
>>728598940Reminder that AVGN started doing reviews for NES games at around the 20 year old mark. Basically the XBOX 360 is as old now as NES games were in 2005. I'm so old.
>>728605613>On the other hand a lot of PS3, Xbox360, and even some Wii games still look like they could be somewhat recent.this argument only works if we're using PC ports or emulation of console games from that time as a baseline, because if you went back and played graphics intensive shit on those consoles right now it would be torturous.
>>728605554Like, when people try to assert minecraft isn't very different and they post a beta screenshot with the Vanilla texture pack like ANYONE was not using texture packs when there wasn't a thousand different planks to reskin and it wasn't completely unreasonable for any singular nigga to make his own texturepack
>>728599153thats fucking wild to think about honestly. theyre still updating a game that was released on a console that is almost old enough to drink
>>728599029I think this is the actual definition. Retro is 20, vintage is 50, and antique is 100.
>20 years since gaming was by white men for white mengrim
i remember when pcfags we're telling us at the time during the era that 7th gen consoles were already outdated and obsolete trash that could barely run anything. now those same people want to tell us those consoles are modern, relevant, and up to snuff still. odd that.
>>728606836were*
>>728606836I think you'll find most PC fags are violently aware of the state of gaming that most console gamers are forced to endure. You know, because they get actual options and aren't completely at the whim of platform holders just nuking the availability of games every 5 years.
>>728605613The wii outputs at 480p.
>browsing v>7th gen isnt retro>browsing vr>theres a thread for the new tomb raider game
Is a dvd player from the year 2005 retro compared to a dvd player manufactured today or is the entire technology retro?
>>728608463a dvd player manufactured today would be retroa dvd player from the year 2005 is vintage
>>728607004It does tend to make the games feel more special though. Needing to dig out a specific piece of old hardware just to play a certain title you're nostalgic for is a key part of the retro gaming experience and part of why people still collect these old games and systems. Yes you can emulate all this stuff with a PC but it just changes the experience
>>728598940Retro is a deliberate stylistic affectation. If something is not retro when it is made, then it is never retro. It is impossible to make a retro game now that focuses on 2000s era games, because they are literally identical to current games, just better. 2000s era hardware may be considered vintage, but it is de facto pointless ewaste. If you want to consider the 360 retro for stylistic affectation, that's cool too, but then every modern console except for the Wii is retro.
I know this is a shitpost thread but I have a completely sincere answerThe PS360 aren't retro. The PS360 will become retro the very day that a new ideal of gaming is invented that would have been unimaginable to them. What's that mean? You know what it means if you aren't underaged, it used to happen all the fucking time.If you were on an Atari 2600, the NES completely redefined what a game was, a new generation started. If you were on an NES, the Genesis completely redefined what a game was, a new generation started. If you were on a Genesis, the PS1 completely redefined what a game was, a new generation started.Same for the PS1 to PS2.It was a miracle every fucking time. A new era, new possibilites, new wonders. It doesn't happen anymore. Games come out and they're still PS360 games at heart. Late era PS360 games just get republished with virtually no alteration and nobody notices or cares because what a "video game" is hasn't changed since 2010.And that's fucking dire because what a "video game" is used to change radically and miraculously every five years, every two years, sometimes every eighteen fucking monthsSo yes, I will declare the PS360 retro, happily and without regret or objection, the day gaming begins again, the way it used to over and over before it entered these decades of stagnation and plateau. When will that happen? I'm waiting.
>>728605613>>728607386>The wii outputs at 480p.Yeah, it was behind the times even when it was new. I guess maybe the Wii is retro; but the PS3 and the 360 aren't.
>>728609189Take your meds schizo and compare the jump from the 6th to 7th generation of consoles and games.

>>728609762give him a break, 40% of zoomers are functionally illiterate
>>728598940It's always going to depend what you mean by that. I don't know if "from 20 years ago or more" is a good definition because it doesn't seem very useful for discussion. By that definition both Space Invaders and Resident Evil 4 are retro and they just seem way too distinct. I don't know why we can't just talk in terms of generations like consoles. The more granular system that's actually divided by hardware seems like much more useful terminology.

I love the Xbox 360 so much. Easily my favorite console. I think even know, it has the "best game library". If you don't take into consideration backwards compatibility or remasters or whatever and you just go by "games released for X console" I think the Xbox 360 is unbeatable. The quality and consistency of releases was fucking retarded. A must play games was dropping every other week.I remember we got entire trilogies on this fucking console. Fear 1, 2, 3. Lost Planet 1, 2, 3. Dead Space 1, 2, 3. Mass Effect 1, 2, 3. Gears of War 1, 2, 3.Crysis 1, 2, 3. Army of Two 1, 2, 3 (i didn't say they were all great but I liked these games).Even the Japjank was fucking incredible.>all shit lmao trash gen skullemoji
>>728599036astrobot is retro
>>728598940Retro is vibes.
>retroShouldn't the correct word be vintage
>>728608230because it's a remake of the original
cod4 isn't retro
>>728601070>You can see the difference between the original xbox/PS2 and the 360/PS3Except you can't see it in game design philosophies, quality of life, controls, and so on unless you look at the immediate beginning of the 6th generation. Consoles became standardized around the period of late gen 6 to early gen 7 and even right now we are still making games in the exact same way, just with some more handholding at best and slightly bigger scope. Yes, we gained some new genres because of the new technological ability, but in terms of brass tacks it has not changed much at all outside of visuals and particle effects. Meanwhile if you look at something like late gen 5 and early gen 6 it's borderline the same design philosophies. There is a very clear difference between how games were made and addressed their audience around early gen 6 to late gen 6 which is when I'd argue the "retro" era becomes demarcated. You wouldn't call the silent movie era and the black and white era the exact same thing, they're different eras. So why are we calling stuff "retro" just because it's older than an arbitrary amount of time without taking anything into context?
>>728600969>that top imageall those games were remade (or are in the process of)
>>728599262so the Dreamcast which came out in 1998, is not retro because it came with an in-built modem and can connect to the internet out of the box, but the PS2 which came out in 2000 is retro because it requires a network adapter?
>>728609751They very much are unless you think that 6th gen games look and play like modern games which they really don't. I never got why /vr/tists can't admit this about the 6th gen. We really haven't had a genuinely stereotypical PS2 game since about 2006-2008, whereas PS360 games look and play like most modern games.
Gen 7 prior to the big xbox update in late 2008 is the cutoff right now. After that online connectivity became basically mandatory and every game started shipping with microtransactions and live service shit.
>>728598940no it's not, the retro cutoff is 1992 and always will be.make up another name for your modern-but-ages-ago crap.
Retro/antique is in part a measure of change or progress. For example, if you picked up a rock off the ground and let it sit for 100 years, it doesn't become "retro" or an antique just because it has aged, in fact that rock is probably already hundreds of millions of years old. Since gameplay and genres have largely been perfected or peaked and subsequently stagnated, and there hasn't been significant progress in video games over the last ~20 years outside of gradual graphical remastering, it's hard to call anything after the early 2000s retro.
>just found my grandpa's ps2 in his basement
>>728599262okay grandpa into the old folks home
When your kids say so.
>>728598940Retro merely means the recent past. When it was used in fashion is to describe trends that aren't "in vogue/fashion" at the time. Prominent usage was in the 70s to describe 60s fashion and early 70s trends in the late 70s.So once a new generation comes along and becomes the new standard or trend for gaming, the old generation is immediately retro. All these rules people are trying to applying of "10 years," "20 years," "only everything up to the GBA can be retro," or "it has a HDMI port" are all bullshit they made up that has nothing to do with what the word retro means. By the common usage of the word, the PS4 arguably could be considered retro despite games still getting made for it though now that Sony says they get more PS5 players than PS4 as of this year.
360 is not retro>bbbut you're a balding old fossil uncYes but it's still not retro and will never be.
>>728615084It is
>>728606298thats the power of rp faggots. gta online really tapped in to the completely dead mmo market and took all of its players.
>>728615084I'm balding and probably older than you. I grew up with the SNES and N64. The 360 is retro. Deal with it.
>>728615254You'll be calling the PS5 retro when 2040 games still play and look exactly the same as they do now
>>728615352That is how the passage of time and trends work Anon.
>>728615379Then call it "old" instead of "retro" you retard. Congratulations, we now have 2 words that have the exact same meaning, I'll start calling grandpas retro
the 360 outputs an image in the exact same way as a modern console and functions the exact same way, literally the only thing dated about it is its computing power. Is darksouls a retro game? it was made for 360.
>>728615469>"Don't use a word based on what it means, use this other word."
Time to start /ng/- nostalgic games for you little /ng/gers
>>728615480>Is darksouls a retro game?yes gramps
>>728615556so /v/ just becomes about AAA flavor of the month slop?
Reminder that Skyrim is a retro game while the more>technically advancedStarfield is a modern game
>>728598940Recently my state made it so that in order to qualify for a Historic plate/tag, instead of the vehicle being 20 years old, it has to be made before 1999.I suggest we do the same thing for deciding what is retro or not. If it's a console or game from 1999 or earlier, then it is retro - if it's after that, it doesn't qualify.
>>728599029FPBP
>>728598940retro is obsolete tech, not something arbitrary age old
>>728616184so is the iphone 4 is retro?
>>728598940I wonder how the fuck some of you came to the conclusion you did. The majority of you retards don't know what retro even means. Pick up a dictionary.
>>728611750Yes, but we're just stuck with this now.
>>728611750Not what vintage means ESL
>>728616386actually the dictionary is where most of the confusion comes from. people ITT think "retro" is a standalone word in this case when really it's a prefix for the games we're describing
>>728615603in what way?
>>728616614Retro comes from the latin word "retro" which means backwards, back, and before. It has always been a standalone word.
>this game that plays the same as a modern game with voice acting, graphics that looks almost the same and physics that didn't involve at all past that is retro because it's le ~old.PS1 is the last retro console.
>>728615646Always was. What percentage of this board are marketing threads?
>>728616774It describes game design. Simple as.
>>728616774That would be a much more accurate definition to argue over, but some people here use >>728600060 this shit
>>728617051>>728600060>especially the fashions of the pastNostalgia of what? The past. They are retro.
>>728616875You're old and unwilling to accept it. People have made Doom run on pregnancy tests, we're not about to reclassify those from vintage feminine products to retro. System specs are not a determination of time period.
>>728598940Everyone uses the word retro wrong. Retro doesn't mean "old", it means something contemporary that was purposefully designed to resemble something from the past. Something that was the cutting edge of its time will never become retro, just old.
>>728599451>Retro refers to a period in time in which game technology was rapidly evolving with every generation, and devs were working within the constraints of limited hardware. No it doesn't. You have no idea what you are talking about.
>>728617379That's not how that definition works. If you wear old clothes your are being imitative of a style in the past the same as if you made those clothes today to imitate that style in the past
The rigid definition of 20 years is stupid.Technological progress slows down, so the cut-off for retro should go up.
>>728606361I wonder if I own anything over 100 years old
>>728617491You don't understand what you are talking about. Retro has a very well defined meaning.
>>728617723Go look up the meaning.
>>728598940It doesn't feel that way because the industry has stagnated since 2015.This will be known as the lost decade or the decade of humiliation.
