15 years later, it still feels like the future
>>
>>728690553
I always thought they were too optimistic setting these games so close I the "near" future.

Maybe like 2230 or, 2130 if we're pushing it. Original Deus Ex was only 2050 after all.
>>
shame they never finished upper hengsha and had to cut it
>>
>>728690698
I always felt renditions of the future like this were a sort of hopeful cope.

>Yeah, in 20 years they'll have all this stuff down by the time I'm 50
>I won't die before it happens
>>
>>728690779
yes, it's called optimism. back in the 50s people were so full of it they thought we'd be living on the moon and vacationing on mars by 2025.
>>
Knowing that humanity will progress beyond my lifespan gives me a weird sense of emptiness
>>
>>728690553
And 15 years later the game is still ahead of its time. Can we even make games like this anymore?
>>
>>728690698
Nah bro they can definitely have this done in two years

They'll just have to REALLY crack the whip and those pillars are going to be like 80% newspaper

Mirror's Edge is 17 years old and looks even more modern.
>>
>>728690553
Deus Ex is already an alternate reality where augmentations were pioneered in 1990s, so it's not exaclty fair. Same thing with Blade Runner, which by 2010s had those massive cities you see in the movies
I like HR more than the original, and I've played original on the release
>>
>>728690963
Whole soundtrack is so perfect. The LiMB clinic, the oriental instruments in Hengsha, Tai Yong Medical.
>>
>>728690912
Ask yourself how bad things have gotten that dystopian futures in fiction are more appealing than the one we have.
>>
>>728691039
it looks how a city looked 17 years ago and still looks today what the fuck are you on about
>>
>>728690698
Being made in 2000 gave plenty of time for all that stuff to occur, but the prequel games despite taking place in the nearer future are obviously meant to be set in a different universe like they had breakthroughs and mass adoption of cybernetics in the 2010s.
>>
>>728691132
The whole soundtrack was top notch

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AfsJj1VY6-4
>>
>>728690765
Maybe they'll add it into the inevitable remake.
>>
>>728690553
I normally hate the 2000s piss filter, but...
>>
why did every game of that era had to have yellow piss filter?
>>
>>728691095
I like these alternate futures where humanity had race in different areas and they didn't stop or half assed it
Which area of expertise did OUR humanity focus on?
Microchips? Telecommunications?
>>
>>728690909
Aren't certain parts of Chinese Metropolitan areas already like this sort of? I saw some video of a dude being on the "ground" then taking like three escalators down and he was still somehow on top of a building. Maybe it's just bullshit editing.

Why do OG Deus Ex/ old school imsim fans always mock this game?

I played Deus Ex 1 after Human Revolution and other than it being more freeform, it felt like a downgrade in every other aspect.
Almost every conversation in the original feels like it was written by armchair conspiracy late 90s forum posters who watched one too many political thrillers.
Characters have no nuance and are more like ideology dispensers.
Other than things like GEP, Dragon's Tooth or sniper, the gunplay is boring and merely functional.
It's supposed to be a cyberpunk world, but it looks super generic in terms of visuals.

It's still a very good game, but HR is all that + enticing characters, visual motifs and quality of life improvements.

the simplification of systems in human revolution compared to the original is one of the gripes i have with it. comparing the process of taking down someone non-lethally with melee between the two games illustrates this point pretty simply
in the original:
>need to dedicate an inventory slot to the baton/prod
>must strike the correct part of someone's body to knock them out in one strike; around the belt area or the neck of NSF troops as an example
>baton is only a realistic option when undetected; trying to incapacitate someone trying to kill you is a death with
>prod can more easily be used in an active engagement as well as to dispatch hardier foes such as the men in black more easily, but it requires limited ammo to use
>dedicated melee skill to invest into if you still want to dispatch later game enemies non lethally in a single melee strike
>one of the augment canisters either gives you increased melee strength or the ability to carry heavier objects; a decision must be made on which you want to use
compare all of this to human revolution:
>press q; wait a few seconds before you can press it again
>optional upgrade lets you knock out two enemies in one takedown
>can be performed in combat with no additional cost
the way it works in human revolution is more intuitive and simpler to pull off, but that also has a side effect of making it a much less compelling system to engage with.
i still enjoy both games, but i just prefer the original partly because of how alien/unique it is relative to human revolution, which is more polished but also plays it safe to a disappointing degree

If you actually look at China's geography, it really is 95% uninhabitable mountain range. Just endless expanses of cliffs and towers of rock and valleys. The only mass-inhabitable space is on the coast, which is where their big cities all are, and then you have tiny bits of rural land that have been used for farming forever, but the problem is that because their country is all mountains and rivers, they have huge swathes of their rural farmland being lost to flooding, erosion, and landslides every year.

It's not a good time to visit or live there. The hotels are desperately trying to make a profit by pushing insane resort fees and overpriced food and drinks onto you. They're not offering discounts, because discounts get in the way of their bottom line. They'd rather go under than reduce the CEO's payout.
Living there is hell, property market is fucked (like most of the US), and the job market is reliant on the hotels and a little from Nellis AFB. If the hotels go under, the desert will take everything back in due time.
>>
>>728690698

The problem with futurists is that they all think like engineers and not like humans. They imagine what's the most obvious track for tech to go down based off what's being developed in the moment, without considering social conditions, man's nature, and whether or not there's actually a market for anything. Flying cars, for example. It'd cost too much, be impossible to regulate traffic, and wouldn't really change much of anything for anyone. We will never have flying cars the way we have IRL cars. Then you have unseen things that totally skew the development of technology. A lot of old scifi has AI robots, invisible armor, full body cybernetics, but no mention of wireless tech or cloud storage at all because that wasn't even occuring to them as a possibility.

I think it’s dumb to ask why our future doesn’t look like sci-fi is dumb because sci-fi designs are usually about form over function.

We’ve barely technologically advanced past the 90s aside from touch screens and internet because implementing shit like flying cars and cyberpunk cityscapes would be too costly and impractical. We might get to sci-fi level tech at some point, but it’ll be centuries from now and will be introduced gradually. We’re only JUST starting to figure out AI and robot assistants, afterall.

You hide it under five pieces of obfuscating legislation that soften the words into meaningless blurbs. China has a serious homeless problem it doesn't care to address because these are people completely shut out of all state resources thanks to the digital ID and social credit score systems. They literally have no way to rent or buy anything that isn't small-scale cash based, of which fewer and fewer things outside of grocery stores exist.

This is why you oppose state-run anything and digital ID, because it always leads to punishment through denial of state-access.

I get pangs of sadness when I think back to being a kid in the late 90s/2000s and thinking we were moving towards a future like this. Then all we ended up with was niggers everywhere and decay.

We would've had this future if leftist policies didn't hold back technological progress. Hell look at the pushback against AI right now. It's all "artists" from the left who feel entitled to billions over their shitty doodles.

The future will not be this because you will not be allowed to have any of this shit. It is an anarchist fantasy at its core. The evil corporations are always the antagonist and can be defeated or held back, people retain some semblance of a fighting spirt, and everyone gets free superpowers and uses them against their creators. None of this will happen. You will just be poor and stupid and weak and helpless.

They are never going to give you nor permit you or your progeny from having access to a flying car. You will never get that, your kids won't get that, that will be for the rich and your descendants will ride a cramped bus.
