Phantom Brave's sequel was completely forgotten, huh. I beat it and I didn't think it had the charm of the original game, but it wasn't unfun because the maps for the most part were solid. The story dragged on, though, and I played it before the bugs were (apparently) fixed. I liked the cameo scenarios and especially just the fact that other games are being represented again, which I hope carries into Disgaea 8. Really, you take the gameplay and goofy nature of Disgaea, let me use Priere and Marona, give me plenty of generics like 7 did and it'll be a good time. I dunno, I'm hopeful they don't fuck it up.

Then they all became DLC, and then NIS basically stopped doing them entirely while making the DLC just be legacy Disgaea characters. Galactic Demons have absolutely fucked defense growth, I've had one able to just facetank Baal at like, iirc level 500ish with a couple small potato reincarnations, all dumped into bulk. The fight itself is glacial, consisting of the GD dealing tiny amounts of chip to Baal, while taking 0 in return, but it takes so much less effort to actually get the GD over the finish line I think it would more than make up for the fight taking so long. That way, you might be able to do it in 50, maybe 55. Extra few hours for any other unit. Gordon might also be a relatively fast clear, I know his specials are super duper fucked up, since they have absurd Attack scaling to account for the fact you're "supposed" to use him as a Gun unit. Put an axe or sword on him, though, and he fucks hard. But 75-85 sounds reasonable for playing through the main story, taking your time and enjoying it, then going through the postgame stuff in a "sensible" manner.

Most units have one or two weapons they should actually use, and deviations from that just feel bad. Most weapons have one or two units that should actually use them, and deviating from that feels bad. This means you either have a system where everyone has their own weapon, which, fair enough I guess, or to get at the shenanigans you can have in PB1, you need very narrow party design, or else use "standard" weapons which actually span enough niches that multiple characters can actually share weapons. The elemental SP and base equip% of PB 1 fulfilled pretty much the same principle of weapon synergy, but was something you could, if you wanted, work around. But there's not a single thing in PB2 you can do to make, say, a sunflower work as a weapon for a fighter, even if only marginally as an option in case yiur fighter gets ahold of it.And then actual post-game builds get kinda boring, because you're just looking for weapon synergies, stacked with whatever free spaces you have left getting the Fenrir's busted generics. And then I can be pissed because of shit like, they made Priere dogshit, because they welded a bunch of unarmed specialist evilities to her, that are worse than the unarmed evilities you can get from generics, that Priere herself can't get, meaning she's locked into an incredibly niche build, that she's awful at because any generic can be made better at it. It's fukkin weird. Rah.

I loved that you could get weapon skills as a passive upgrade and put it on a different one, like giving spear skills to a staff user as seen here. I don't know why, I'm not a psychologist. 3D and model based animation doesn't work the same way. Things that look perfectly fine as 2D animation, because your mind is engaged filling blanks in doesn't work anymore in 3D.Top shelf 3D looks better than top shelf 2D, but mediocre 2D looks WAY better than mediocre 3D.And, NIS/Disgaea was well above mediocre 2D. They were some of the stronger 2D. And switching from good 2D, to sub-mediocre 3D will never not be a difficult pill. If NIS actually managed to pull 3D off well, there would probably still be some people that simply prefer the 2D style, but the main problem is they kinda... didn't. Phantom Brave 2 BARELY has some hair and cloth physics working, that more often just bug out and overtax the unoptomized engines. Most of what NIS is doing, is 3D versions of their 2D animations, with a more active walk cycle.
