I remember when I earned enough pocket money to buy not only a GameCube, but also a PS2. And I even ended up with an Xbox later.
Now a kid won't even be able to get a single console with years worth of birthday and Xmas money.
This is fucking grim, and people don't realize yet how the current situation is shaping up the industry in the coming years.

NVIDIA said they're making less GPUs. Crucial is out of PC consume market. Samsung is raising prices on their RAM. Laptop computers are going up in prices. Didn't one NVIDIA graphics card partner leave or am I imagining things? Valve Steam Machine isn't going to sell well, lol. Will pre existing GPUs be affected by this? I haven't built a PC yet, but I would like to. I don't want the flashiest, high tech computer. I just need something that can run 3D modeling software and the occasional 5+ year old game.

I'm thinking the same
I already have a high end surge protector, but no UPS, I'm saving to get a high-end UPS.
I see lots of people in these threads bragging, who seem to think shit never breaks and their hardware will last forever. Even if you take good care of them, electronics eventually fail.
>>
>>728718665
This is their ideal future for computing btw, throw everything on a datacenter and starve the consumer market so personal computing no longer exists. Make everything a walled garden, charge subscriptions for everything. Eventually they'll divvy the internet up into packages like a cable subscription. They've always wanted to do this but regulators stopped it ages ago. Cloud computing gets around the regulatory issues with the fact that you're using their hardware, thus they're not violating net neutrality, only putting terms on the use of their servers.

it's 10.99 now and it'll be 79.99 if they get their way, just like cable and just like streaming services.

I might snag a 9070xt, especially since I'm switching to linux soon, but it might cause a chain of other upgrades to accommodate it like I've been told I'd need a new PSU to power it, case in case it doesn't fit, Motherboard if it isn't compatible which means that damn near everything might need to be replaced lol.

We are witnessing a collaborative sabotage of the consumer market by all hardware companies as punishment for users complaining about AI.
Today, we have hardware capable of running computationally expensive workloads and even running local LLMs, who I greatly diminishes the perceived value of """AI.""" Nvidia et all therefore have concluded that they must change the world such that AI is a neccessity, rather than face the truth that it currently servers virtually no purpose.

How will they accomplish this? By starving us of hardware. Shutting down their consumer hardware brands to fully focus all their efforts on AI. Starving us of powerful hardware. Forcing us to rely on cloud solutions where we must pay subscription fees and have our data harvested for slow and unreliable services.
Its already happening, new phones and laptops will release with gimped specs. GPUs will have a production shortage and and be priced extremely high. RAM and storage will be unobtainable.

>>
>>728715785
As others have said, they're selling, just not to normal consumers. The parts are being eaten up by data centers.

There will be an AI crash in the next couple years, which is why they're not bothering to increase production and instead just switching focus while they can take advantage of the bubble that currently exists. Eventually, we'll see the bubble burst and there will only be one or two remaining AI "winners," and consumers will become the primary market again. That's probably several years away though.

They know that. That's why the market is shifting rather than production increasing. They're taking advantage of the short term gains they'll get from the bubble without creating a risk of overproduction once the bubble bursts. They also know consumers will have no choice but to go back to them once the market settles back down, so there's no downside to them making these changes for the time being and pissing off consumers.

The reality of this situation means that developers will eventually have to accept that they cannot aim for top of the line hardware anymore and have to focus more on optimization because nobody is going to be able to afford/get their hands on new parts, but we will probably see devs be stubborn for the next year or so before they realize they have to start setting last generation hardware as the target.

They missed the boat, their only hope is some state-subsidized Chinese company releasing an open source answer to CUDA, but that would fuck them from the other end as cheaper Chinese hardware would pull their budget market out from under them.

No one's saying AI is going anywhere; that's not what the "bubble bursting" means. The AI bubble is the artificially high, hype-based speculative market value on various AI companies. They're currently massively overvalued and tons of money is being pumped into these companies with the knowledge that, in the end, only one or two will actually survive.

Eventually, the market value for these companies will come crashing back down to earth, and many of them will be wiped out in the process. The ones that remain will become the "victors" and the defacto AI companies moving forward. The tech will still exist and be useful/valuable in more realistic ways, but the massive overvaluation and overinvestment will slow significantly as the market restabilizes.

There's not a single sub that goes out of chyna that can't be tracked. Meaning their nuclear deterrence is effectively zero.

Why would I update my drivers when I only play 10+ year old video games on my 10+ year old operating system?
>>
>>728722664
No? Windows is trash, microsoft's software in general is trash and has always trash, it only sees use because there's no viable alternative. Nvidia software on the other hand is both state-of-the-art and costs nothing, it exists to lock users into their hardware and it's very effective at that. An open source solution isn't just going to appear from thin air, mostly because it's not necessary for users. The prime beneficiary of that software would be AMD or whatever company makes it, because it'd let them break off some of nvidia's monopoly, not the end users, who are pretty much universally satisfied with nvidia's software right now and heavily prefer them. Much like how everyone prefers steam and so voluntarily locks themselves into valve's platform. You have it reversed, AMD is more like Epic in this analogy, they're in a position of having an inferior product AND no market share so they have to seek adoption through other avenues such as epic online services. fwiw I wish nvidia had real competition, but it's not as trivial as you make it sound.

lol no. Microsoft doesn't care about gaming anymore, all they care about is AI. They literally killed Xbox. Shows how important gaming is to them. Gaming makes billions of dollars, but they're convinced AI will make them trillions.

They will eventually realize they've been lied to by Altman and will start desperately trying to recoup losses from the AI scam, but until that happens expect them to cannibalize microsoft gaming subsidiaries to feed the AI money pit.

>>728724898
I hope you're right, but this could also just be the new normal. People pay outrageous prices for phones and macbooks already. This will be the excuse for the PS6 to cost 1000 and we already know the next xbox if it actually materializes is already being referred to as a "luxury product" by microsoft.
I suppose one positive of this might be nintendo continuing to have outdated hardware priced reasonably which let them keep producing cheaper games.

Yeah. That is because an insane amount of people are debtmaxxing not realizing that at some point you will run out of credit and the ability to take loans.

Pretty sure there has been some reports this year about phone makers bitching that people are actually just continuing to use their old phones instead of upgrading.
It just highlights the wall that we are heading towards in that consumers have less and less money, but the companies don't want to accept that.

I wonder if they'll over expand manufacturing to meet the crazy demands right now, and when it all crashes the parts will all be dirt cheap and easily accessible
>>
>>728729446
iirc most of them have said they have no interest in doing that, probably because they know this demand isn't going to last forever so they're just making short term profits and then they'll come crawling back to consumers around 2028. unless ai really explodes in that time which is unlikely.

Waitfags BTFO, but there isn't a GPU shortage past launch windows.
>>
>>728729548
That's pretty annoying, so they're just completely tossing their customers to the side to suck off a.i. companies without a care in the world, the worst part is it wont matter a bit because they'll be so godforsaken rich afterwards it wouldn't matter if every last one of us never bought from them again.
>>

>>728729446
why spend ten billion dollars to make a factory to produce more chips when you could just have the same amount of chips and sell them for a higher price because the demand is lower than the supply and retards are throwing infinite money at you?
there is literally no reason for them to ramp production, they have all the power. they could say "oh yeah prices are up 250% because reason, suck our dicks" and AI companies would have to kowtow to them.
>>
>>728729837
kek, on top of using those 12GB or RAM I mentioned, this about:process shows me it's ALSO using 7GB of my GPU's own RAM
This is insane.

solar flares have literally never in human history been substantial. either that, or everything is designed to withstand it (more likely). faraday cages offer some protection, why wouldn't these companies burning billions of dollars not install those too?
>>
>>728729836
the actual small ram manufacturers are getting fucked too because there's 3 companies that produce all of it stuff that the aftermarket brands need. so even if 1 ram company like tgroup wanted to only sell to consumers it doesn't matter because samsung, micron(aka crucial, who has already said they'd stop consumer sales), and sk hynix can make a deal that directly benefits data centers instead and then the smaller ram manufacturers are fucked just like us. samsung won't even sell ram to their own phone division, it's THAT bad.

they really need to support more programs especially things like ComfyUI/diffusion instead of having random people find work arounds to get their cards to work
had to get a 5070ti (Win10 ltsc) for second system to get shit to work properly while 9070xt is for gaming on linux

they are not wrong that AMD will continue to fuck up their easy chance to get more customers
should have given the 9070XT 24gb instead of 16gb the same goes with Nvidia with the 5080 and 5070ti

If it's just for video games, no. Just adapt to the 10GB by reducing the game settings.
If you're doing other things that require RAM, such as generating porn videos of your female friends and family, 3D rendering, etc., then 10GB really isn't enough and you'll need to upgrade regardless of the price.
>>
>>728730774
Phones are already reverting back to 4gb of ram, the next GPUs might be 12gb again. Or worse, 8gb and they'll try to get DLSS to compensate.
