This always bothered me about fromslop.
Idk about you, but I'd assume the roll button exists to physically move me away from the enemy.
But it apparently actually exists to phase me put of existence for a fraction of a second to move through matter.
And I'm supposed to just... intuit this.

They designed and balanced the whole game around this feature, sure you can make use of a shield and hyper armor as well to alleviate some pressure but the bulk of the challenge comes from dodging enemy attacks with widely different dodge timings. I think this is way better than the way ARPGs are usually designed, with stat checks and grind.

I get that they game is designed that way.
But how are you supposed to know?
It's not how rolling works in real life and there's no tooltip or anything to inform you.

I'll give an opposite to this: a hard hitting spell makes the framerate drop. On first read you may think "that is so bad, no dev would do it intentionally" but player feedback on Dragon's Dogma had players saying they thought it was "epic" when their big sorcerer spells lagged the game.

Dodge rolls have been a thing in video games since the 90s. The only way you wouldn't intuit that the roll was a dodge was if you were underaged and had brain damaged since the second you tried to roll out of the way and the attack phased through you that this attack was a iframe move.

Frame holds on impacts to emphasis on how much force is being applied before the enemy goes flying. Asura's Wrath did this better than anyone (outside of anime). Though calling it a videogame is a bit of a stretch but damn if it wasn't hype as fuck.

FF5, Rune Factory 3. There's a lot, but these are the ones that come off the top of my head.
It's a pretty common trope in a lot of NUMBERS NUMBER NUMBERS kind of RPGs.

A similar gimmick is "Character gets stat buffs/debuffs for the following battle after immediate preceding story events", but I think that's surprisingly less common.

The Undertale pacifist final boss which is really more of a victory lap for the player does it twice over in different ways. If you die during the fight the player character just refuses to die and the fight keeps going. Eventually the boss gets pissed off about how you refuse to stay down and uses an undodgable attack that puts your HP into the decimals.

DnD and related knockoffs usually have this as a class feature for Barbarian when they're in their rage. When it's at mid-level it's usually the weak version where one otherwise lethal blow instead leaves you at 1hp, when it's at high level it's often the strong version in the sense of being physically incapable of entering a downed state while raging (but once it ends it all catches up to them if they weren't healed back up in time).

It's cause ducking into a roll visually looks like your character is tucking into a smaller shaper and jumping over shockwaves to maintain the illusion. You'll need to have some sort of slowmo camera mod to catch the enemy clipping through your character most of the time.
The Iframes are timed so that it only ends when you land on the floor so in later games where there are longer hitting shockwaves would there be a need to jump instead.

I guess it comes down to the viewer, but I don't need a slowmo mod to think it looks extremely silly that my character jumps directly into the enemy's swings to "dodge" them. It's probably the shittiest form of defensive option visually, and it baffles me they're still stuck with it, especially since they've solved it TWICE in Bloodborne and Sekiro.
Other games do the bare my minimum of at least blurring your character a bit to imply some kinda etherealness when you dodge, making it slightly more believable that you can phase through attacks, but not Fromsoft, since they know they don't have to do better. People will defend every aspect of their games to their death, even the openly bad ones that have been solved decades ago, and they know it. I even like their games a lot, but seeing people endlessly excusing and glazing every aspect of their design gets on my nerves.

That's a bit of a band-aid fix, since I can still see the beginning and end of ye olde roll animation when the ring is equipped.
